If you are interested in these stuff, there's a fairly big "lore" in Ghost: Basically, there's this ancient satanic cult called "The Clergy", which wanted to spread the word of Satan in the most effective way possible. In the late 60's/early 70's, since Rock music was on a global hype, they decided to spread the word that way, creating a Rock band called Ghost. The lead singer would always have the title of "Papa" (which means pope). The first one was called Papa Nihil (the one we see earning the face paint and the white eye in 'Dance Macabre' music video). Following the downfall of Rock and the lack of fast communication technology at the time, Ghost went into the shadows and was never seen again... until 2010, when the band suddenly reappears, since modern technology has reached the point they needed with the Internet available worldwide. Now with a new lead singer: Papa Emeritus I (eldest son of Papa Nihil), they released the first album (Opus Eponymous). After that, each album would have a new front man. That being said, we had Papa Emeritus II (younger brother of the previous one) on 'Infestissuman' (2013), Papa Emeritus III (youngest of the brothers) on 'Meliora' (2015) and then, all of the sudden, all 3 were mysteriously murdered, leaving the front man role open, but no more Papa Nihil sons to fill in. Because of that, they were forced to, for the first time, use someone out of the bloodline, and, as so, he couldn't be called "papa". Sister Imperator, a high rank woman in The Ministry (the woman we see initiating Nihil in 'Dance Macabre' music video), pointed Cardinal Copia for the 4th album ('Prequelle', 2018). Nihil strongly opposed the choice but ultimately had to accept it, as long as he stayed cardinal and never elevated to the rank of papa. Papa Nihil, despite his advanced age, used to make an appearance at the concerts playing a saxophone solo in the song 'Miasma'. In one of the concerts, he dies onstage. Now, with the old leader dead, Sister Imperator promoted Cardinal Copia to papa, officially named Papa Emeritus IV and he was the front man for the 5th and current album, "Impera', from 2022. The music video for the song 'Kiss The Go Goat' (supposedly a song from the old days when the band was formed in the 60's when Nihil was still the lead singer) reveals us some details from the past. Back then, Nihil and Imperator were lovers, but as he was becoming a rockstar, he was getting too much attention from his female fans and for that reason they eventually broke up. Sister Imperator was pregnant at that time, but never told him. Now, in current days, she was actually the one who ordered all Nihil's sons to be killed, so she could point someone new to the role and that someone was gonna be Cardinal Copia, her and Nihil's bastard son. That way, she got her revenge and at the same time could put his bastard son in his place of right, as papa and leader of the band. Obviously, all of this is just fiction and was being slowly revealed through the years by all sorts of media (specially short lore videos they release on the band's RUclips channel). The lead singer behind the mask (it's always a realistic mask, never his real face), songwriter and creator of it all is Tobias Forge. All of the albums are always conceptual too. The first 3 were 3 parts of a same story. 'Opus Eponymous' was about the annunciation of the Antichrist coming to Earth. Ends with the song 'Genesis', meaning his birth. The next record, 'Infestissuman', starts telling us the Antihrist announced before is actually the son of Lucifer himself and the album describes his first contact with mankind. Next one, 'Meliora', jumps in time and is about the relationship between the Antichrist and the mankind growing stronger and stronger to the point we reach the absolute absence of God, masked by the last song of the album, 'Deus in Absentia". The next 2 had a new concepts of their own. 'Prequelle' compared faith and blind belief to a plague, dangerous and fast spreading (having the Black Plague as the conceptual background for the comparison). And, finally, 'Impera' is about the mankind's fetish for power and how frail it is. It takes empires as an example, since every single one of them throughout history has risen and fallen. It's always a cycle that never failed before and never will. So, also modern empires, no matter how unbreakable they seem to be, will eventually fall and it's just a matter of time. Well... that's only the tip of the iceberg. Give them a chance. It only gets better and better. It's really hard to think of a single one Ghost song that's not a damn earworm, but I'd suggest those below because of... being easily available with good quality of video and sound: • Faith ( ruclips.net/video/qvZKwvpQAUc/видео.html ) • Square Hammer ( ruclips.net/video/VqoyKzgkqR4/видео.html ) • Cirice ( ruclips.net/video/-0Ao4t_fe0I/видео.html ) • Year Zero ( ruclips.net/video/3pLbobCbNzc/видео.html ) • Rats ( ruclips.net/video/C_ijc7A5oAc/видео.html ) • Hunter's Moon ( ruclips.net/video/rtkaUZvMaG8/видео.html ) • Mary On A Cross ( ruclips.net/video/NmxFxBiCrL4/видео.html )
Forgive me Papa for I have sinned. I just discovered Ghost a few weeks ago and I have deep repentance for all of the wasted years of pleasure and joy that your talent has brought to me. I will see you in Chicago in August 2023!! ❤
James Hetfield of Metallica is a huge fan of Ghost and used to show up at their shows when they were no bigger than little coffee house shows. They would be backstage changing and in their underwear and James would just stroll on in. 😂 When Metallica was honored in Sweden James asked that Ghost be there to play for them. You can hear the reverence and influence of Metallica in their music and I respect that kind of relationship between artists. 😊❤
I can say that it was the same for me. It took seven years before He Is finally broke all the resistance i had created over the years. Now i love just everything. One thing for you. Ghost is not a band. Ghost is only Tobias Forge. It's a little bit complicated to explain here but you will understand more and more as you learn and listen. But basically Tobias who had tried his luck in many different bands one day came up with the song "Stand By Him". That was 2006 and by 2010 he had written eight more songs and the first album "Opus Eponymous" was recorded and released. Tobias wrote it all himself and only two other musicians helped him with the recording. (Bass and drums). Four people all friends or people he knew was hired as live musicians and the first tour started. One of them (Martin Persner rhythm guitar) later became involved with the song writing and has credits for songs on album two and three. After the third album a big argument led up to a court case where four of now five musicians (not Martin) sued Tobias but lost. Since then Tobias has written together with a lot of different people and have some musicians when he records the albums and another ones as a live band when Ghost play live. But everything is created by Tobias and he is the only one who decides everything about what is about Ghost. Hope that this information helped a little bit.
Put aside all the internet trash talk about them being Metal or not, being "tr00" enough and all that gatekeeping bullshit, Ghost have been doing a serious solid work regarding music quality, composing, production and even the marketing, which was always a big aspect of Rock'n Roll since the very beginning. Essentially they're doing a damn honest job and an unvaluable favor to the Rock/Metal scene in general. Tobias is a master at the art of balancing the visual impact without sacrificing the quality of the music. You get both with Ghost: super fun theatrics and spectacular music.
Don't get me wrong, I love the two original songs you've reacted to, but I wouldn't even put these in my personal Ghost top 15....maybe even my top 20. I am looking forward for the journey to continue.
Ghost have, since I first heard them back in 2014, a special place in my music heart. Almost all songs are bangers and are musically brilliant. The earlier stuff from the first album Opus Eponymous are fantastic even though the production are not as polished as the later ones. But the songs, man! So addictive.
Watching your faces as you discover the Magick of Ghost is so so relatable. I feel exactly the same way! I recommend for a harder edge "Rats" and I also love "Square Hammer." Their Grammy winner "Cirice" is incredible and haunting and reminds me a little of Stephen King's "Carrie." Love your pod, new subscriber here!! 😊
As a long time Ghost lover, I don't think there is a bad song from them. I never skip any, you can listen to every album straight through. My favorite song is Elizabeth. I think Pinnacle to the Pit would be a good next choice for you guys musically. Glad you are turned on to them now. Go to a live show, the vibe, the people, the music, it's an amazing experience.
Just wait until you go through their entire discography. I can’t count five ghost songs I dislike. I’ve listened to every album. Every cover. I can’t name 5. It’s unreal.
In finding how to describe what they do, I'd read that they are more described as a theatrical production. Their influences are directly bands like KISS, Black Sabbath, and Alice Cooper.
Ghost is like a play or a movie! They have extensive lore and astablished characters (e.g. there are "different" singers that are fronting the band and so on). I think the visuals make more and more sense the more you dive into their music.
One that I will always recommend is “Mummy Dust” (Live if there’s a good enough recording) Tobias has roots in black metal and you can hear it come out in Mummy Dust
Love watching these Ghost reactions and seeing you guys just grooving to this. Such a banger. If you're looking for recs of songs that have videos, then I'd recommend Square Hammer and Rats or Year Zero.
This was my first ever Ghost song sad to say. I'll admit it took a couple of listens on Octane before I decided to try out other song's. Call Me Little Sunshine was 1st on RUclips mix, Spillways was 2nd. After hearing Spillways I immediately wanted more then I came across the debut and instantly fell in love. Already seen them once last year with wife and 3 year old daughter. Now, I'm going again with the whole family later this year. Ghost is a family affair in my household.
Ghost’s full discography is extremely diverse. You’ve heard a lot of new stuff, which has substantially better production and is more melodic in general. Their older stuff has a strong 70s / Sabbath vibe in terms of sonics. All of their stuff is very well composed though, and they have tons of groove no matter what era you hear. As a huge metal head, Ghost is my biggest guilty pleasure. Love this band.
Also Tobias is papa 1, 2, 3, and cardinal Copia. (They've all been killed off and most of us think cardinal Copia will be killed off soon as well 😢. His character tends to change with each album or "era". The live band (nameless ghouls) were replaced in 2017 and current musicians have been performing with him ever since.
I guess I should have taken notice of the things in the background of their videos... these cats are the antithesis of what the Ghost message is. Just an FYI.
Next reaction to them could be rats. Dance Macabre as well. Rats has a later Judas Preist sound to it (who they've toured with funny enough). And of course, I'm always going to throw Cirice and Watcher in the Sky in the mix, lol.
Thank you for doing this! Now CIRICE! I love to turn the bass up and blast that one in my car! Gives me all dopamine! And nice ghost energy drink choice! 😊💜
You guys should really react to ”Ghost of perdition” by the Swedish band Opeth. The live version from Red Rocks. It WILL blow your socks off! Also love Ghost btw 😉
I personally don't think they blew up as fast as you might think. I've been following them since their first album and no one in my circle knew about them. Then the second album, same story, but they were more out there and had already gained their fair share of haters. My friends mocked me for years for liking Ghost, and I know it was the same for a lot of fans. I'm not sure exactly when they became so popular but I know nowadays no one ever recommends songs from their first two albums, which sound really different from what they sound like today but they're still unique and awesome.
My only wish of Ghost is that they would do longer guitar solos. I don’t need 4 mins but like a minute long solo would be nice. They tease so much on their songs 😂
Love the vids guys and great reaction! I'm just gonne throw some songs at ya for potential future reactions that is what in imo are the reasons why they are considered one of the greatest modern rock/metal bands. So here goes, For one of their most killer riffs do "Watcher in the Sky", "Cirice", "Faith" or "Absolution" next, their most heaviest song is probably "Mommy Dust" or "Per Aspera Ad Inferi". And, for their most recognized "ballads" it's either "He Is" or "Darkness At the Heart of my Love", their most catchy songs are either "Dance Macabre", "Kaisarion", "Spillways" and of course, "Mary on a Cross" which viral on TikTok. So many great, well composed and interesting rock and heavy metal songs to be discovered, I lowkey envy anyone who is just discovering Ghost, trust me, you are in for such a ride!
I'd strongly recommend checking out some of their older hits! cirice is definitely up there for sure. I personally am more of a fan of their older work, their first 3 albums. slightly heavier, a good bit darker.
I know you guys are going to do reaction videos before listening, but the entire album Impera (that this song is on) is a MASTERPIECE. Start to finish, it's one of the best albums I've heard in a very long time! You've just started scratching the surface with how sick AND dope Ghost is. Dive deeper and brighten your day. Tobias Forge (who is currently portraying Papa Emeritus IV/Cardinal Copia) is actually a "Satanist" and he IS Ghost. The other musicians come and go and there is a lot of backstory there. Listen to the messages Tobias gives you and you'll realize that Satan is an important character who can teach some valuable lessons. Not everything is so black and white.
Papa is a Satanist. Tobias is apparently closer to agnostic... though, he's never fully defined his beliefs except to say he's not an atheist, and not an organized religion type... which would rule out Satanism.
@@diztortedviews3857 He is, but people misunderstand what that means. Satanism isn't a religion and they don't believe in or worship the devil. The name is taken to specifically criticise religion - that is to say they're saying "If Christians believe in unequal rights, lack of body autonomy, control over who you can love or marry - then I guess we're the opposite of that." Satanism is a philosophical perspective, not a religious one. It's a subset of secular humanism. It's not without it's own complications, but ultimately it's a sarcastic name attached to a group which are all about progressive beliefs in science and evolving ethics. For the sake of Ghost the Satanism is played up to specifically piss off the people who think metal music is devil worshipping.
@Benjamin this is all for show! He does not hold this dear to himself or his family! Hell, alot of us agree with his personal sides of things. Yes, in his songs I can definitely agree with you, but in real life he is not. Like most of his newer material is mainly about politics now.
I go with the perception... "Satan was the lord of music in heaven... Once fallen why would he try and seduce you with what we see and hear as Black Metal, a genre that has a cult following... As a Lord and Master of his Art and Craft he would use Harmonies, Melodies and songs that put an Earworm in your mind that makes you remember and nod you're head on a daily basis... Melody would be his choice to attract the masses to his cause" 🤘🏻🤘🏻
As ualREDDYknow said, it's originally a demon/evil figure in german folklore. As usual, Christianism twisted it into just one more name for the Devil or one of the countless demons in occidental culture, being known as the demon of transformation, as he is able to transfigure into any form to seduce the victim.
Ghost seems to avoid making music that can be rigidly classified. Their music can be really heavy, really glam, or even really poppy. I love how they blend elements from their influences to create something great. Cirice has some monster riffs that have a Metallica feel. Spillways has an early Bon Jovi feel. Their imagery borrows heavily from the horror movies of the early 70's and 80's like Carrie, The Omen, or the Exorcist. As far as Satanism is concerned, Mr. Forge has described it as a pop-culture form of satanism, more centered around being a free thinker. His past with organized religion has left him with a tendency to call out its hypocrisy in song. He is calls out the charismatic preachers. Cirice point our how manipulative religion can be.
Hey, just wanted to say. Tobias forge is the singer of all papas (I,II,III and IIII), but not Nihil. Nihil is portrayed by another actor. Tobias himself, and Per (lead guitarist, AKA Sodo/dew) are satanists.
@Mary Brant yes, he is. You seem bothered when people state the facts about this. In multiple comments you've chimed in with this denial, but all interviews with the man say otherwise. Do some research on this before you naysay. It's ok to like a Satanist
ghost are tongue-in-cheeck occult rock, with KISS vibes. Churchy tunes and vibes but anti-religion. Their first album, Opus Eponymous is still their best album.
Nope, not that simple. Mephistopheles is a crossroads demon in German folklore. Little sunshine is what Aleister Crowley said was the meaning of “the beast 666”, which is what he called himself.
"Call me cast in the lake of fire" that's where Mephistopheles (Satan) is going...People bobbing their heads to music that makes fun of Jesus Christ, praises Satan,Freemasonry, and the occult..No wonder everything is constantly getting worse...Praise you Jesus...every knee will bend, head will bow,and tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord... This comment might be controversial to some, but someone needs to say it..
Just seen them live twp weeks ago and was completely blown away. Been a fan since 2015. I'm the same way with pop culture, if its to popular I steer clear. I've never watched an episode of stranger things or game of throwns 😂😂😂

James Hetfield is a member of Ghost fan club, can be seen with Ghost merch even ;) There's a video where he plays Cirice at rehersal.
Joe Elliot from Def Leppard loves Ghost so much he featured in another version of Spillways!
And don't forget Dave Grohl He have also played the drums on one liveconsert Behind a mask , off course 😏
@@torbjornsjooander5625 LZZY Hale is a huge fan also. she was one the Sister of Sins at one show at the request of Tobias..
Just do Cirice or Faith. You'll be obsessed
Faith is one of my favorite songs by Ghost. Love playing that shit full blast in my car, windows down in downtown Seattle traffic.
Cirice won them a Grammy.
Also the song ritual was chosen as one of the 50 most evil songs ever.
Forgive me Papa for I have sinned. I just discovered Ghost a few weeks ago and I have deep repentance for all of the wasted years of pleasure and joy that your talent has brought to me. I will see you in Chicago in August 2023!! ❤
I got lucky enough to be turned on to Ghost back in 2011 by my very good friend. Watching them just get better and better has been such a treat.
you will enjoy Rats! also the song CIRICE that you mentioned is pronounced Ce reese! the current Papa is Papa Emeritius IV aka Cardinal Copia.

Gotta react to Ghost "Square Hammer" (Official MV). This was during the Papa Emeritus III era.
More Ghost!! Please!!
OPETH IS SO GOOD
Fun fact: it was the guitarist from Opeth who played the guitars on Ghost's Impera album
Life Eternal is a must !!!! 🤘
I was addicted at this song and i didn't know about the video. The video is cool but i think the song is better alone because is a masterpiece.
Watcher in the Sky will get your blood rollin!
My only wish of Ghost is that they would do longer guitar solos. I don’t need 4 mins but like a minute long solo would be nice. They tease so much on their songs 😂
Grifwood is amazing, witch image too.
Love the vids guys and great reaction! I'm just gonne throw some songs at ya for potential future reactions that is what in imo are the reasons why they are considered one of the greatest modern rock/metal bands. So here goes,
For one of their most killer riffs do "Watcher in the Sky", "Cirice", "Faith" or "Absolution" next, their most heaviest song is probably "Mommy Dust" or "Per Aspera Ad Inferi".
He is!
Wrong. Tobias is NOT a Satanist lmao
He's not a satanist
Papa is a Satanist. Tobias is apparently closer to agnostic... though, he's never fully defined his beliefs except to say he's not an atheist, and not an organized religion type... which would rule out Satanism.
@@diztortedviews3857 He is, but people misunderstand what that means. Satanism isn't a religion and they don't believe in or worship the devil. The name is taken to specifically criticise religion - that is to say they're saying "If Christians believe in unequal rights, lack of body autonomy, control over who you can love or marry - then I guess we're the opposite of that."
Satanism is a philosophical perspective, not a religious one.
You must do Cirice (sir eese) as your next Ghost reaction. Can't wait!
Even if you don’t react to it check out jigolo har megiddo acoustic version. Its great
I agree ghost is a great rock band, the satanic element is just icing on the cake for me.
The lady looks like Rebecca Ferguson and the song has some Type O Negative vibes.
I go with the perception...
"Satan was the lord of music in heaven... Once fallen why would he try and seduce you with what we see and hear as
Black Metal, a genre that has a cult following...
As a Lord and Master of his Art and Craft he would use Harmonies, Melodies and songs that put an Earworm in your mind that makes you remember and nod you're head on a daily basis...
Melody would be his choice to attract the masses to his cause"
🤘🏻🤘🏻
From the pinnacle to the pit
Love the Intro
Ghost is the next big thing coming out from Sweden since the ABBA days in the 70-80 ts 🤘🤘🤘 Cheers yall🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪
Roxette, Ace of Base, Kent? Svenske klaphat
'Mephistopheles' is another word for the devil...
Yall should listen to Elizabeth or really anything from their first album
You two are awesome!!!! Please react to Hunter's moon.
Mephistopheles is another name for the devil, great review, I see you picked up on the snare, really makes the track come to life.
Mephistopheles is a demon from German folklore
As ualREDDYknow said, it's originally a demon/evil figure in german folklore. As usual, Christianism twisted it into just one more name for the Devil or one of the countless demons in occidental culture, being known as the demon of transformation, as he is able to transfigure into any form to seduce the victim.
It is also the name of the devil in the book Faust.
Need to listen to the non video version, they cut out so much of the guitar solo for some reason
Cirice, Twenties, Rats...
Fucking A man tgis song is legit...
Elizabeth or Ritual next!
SQUARE HAMMER PLEASEEEEEEE
You should have listened to the live version! It's 1000000% better than the album version.
Live at Jimmy Kimmel is awsome!
@@99proff it has to be my favorite live performance
Hey, just wanted to say. Tobias forge is the singer of all papas (I,II,III and IIII), but not Nihil. Nihil is portrayed by another actor. Tobias himself, and Per (lead guitarist, AKA Sodo/dew) are satanists.
Tobias is not a Satanist
Tobias is the singer of Nihil too.
@Mary Brant yes, he is. You seem bothered when people state the facts about this. In multiple comments you've chimed in with this denial, but all interviews with the man say otherwise. Do some research on this before you naysay. It's ok to like a Satanist
Algo
ghost are tongue-in-cheeck occult rock, with KISS vibes. Churchy tunes and vibes but anti-religion. Their first album, Opus Eponymous is still their best album.
Have ya’ll seen their performance on Jimmy Kimmel?
Cirice or Square Hammer!
OMG,..you have to look up who Mephistopheles is??
They're like Alice Cooper.
M an you should begin with "Bible son g" and "He is" The creation songis epic orginally made bya swedish punkrock band :)
"Mephistopheles" is one of the names for Satan. so is "Little Sunshine"
Nope, not that simple. Mephistopheles is a crossroads demon in German folklore. Little sunshine is what Aleister Crowley said was the meaning of “the beast 666”, which is what he called himself.
@@tenrai5 and also widely accepted as one of the many names for satan.
Now listen to Rats and Respite on the Spitalfields
If you think this stuff is good wait till you see them live...OMG!!!
Cirice next. Just sayin' :) :)
I hear Dio in this song
I wonder if they believe in God? 😂😂😂😮😂😂🎉❤
What you said is exactly how I feel. I missed out on this band for years and stumbled upon them. Absolutely amazing. Check out the new single Stay.
