Those lighter bullets sure did like flying that day. I sometimes find odd or unexpected results now and then too. Sometimes I even mess up my range day by having the test cartridges fall out of the cartridge sleeve where they were marked by powder charge for testing...haha. Thanks for bringing us along.
I've done the ole ammo box drop before with unlabeled rounds, definitely a good way to mess up your range day! This bolt gun really enjoys 55gr projectiles, but I guess not so much on the heavier side. Maybe I'll try a hotter load and see if they wake up? Have a great weekend 👍🤠🇺🇲
Yeah, they were not cheap, which is why I stopped wasting them 😆 going to try the Nosler and Hornady 68gr here soon, and the new Midsouth 75gr poly tipped, too. What powders do you like with those?
Something seems really really off.... 1:9 should absolutely handle projectiles as long as 69gr smk.... were you pushing them extra super slow?? If not, this sounds dumb, but I'd check your rifling. As in you should manually measure the twist rate a few times. There have been cases of barrels mislabeled from the factory, or even ones that somehow skipped the rifling process all together(that's not the case here, but you get the point). As for 223 precision, 1:8 seems to be the sweet spot for fat juicy precision "nodes" up to 80gr-ish. The only real reason to pick a 1:7 is if you're shooting some of the ultra long VLD/ELD style heavy bullets that are super expensive. 223 wylde chamber or normal 223 or 223 Ai seem to give the best precision. 5.56 chambers have about 0.125" more free bore prior to touching the lans. Might be useful if you're slinging 90gr VLD seated out to 2.50" or something, but otherwise doesn't do you any favors for precision.
Have to say I'm bit surprised at how bad those first few rounds shot. I have shot a few reloads with those same bullets through a 1:9 barrel with just over MOA results. Every barrel is different but I didn't think those results were abnormal. That being said there is a lot of data on those loads your using we don't know yet so lots variables could possibly be making a difference. It does seem odd that those are shooting that bad, guess we'll know more in the next video!
That could probably help, but I don't want to be right on the threshold and have anything to worry about. It would have been nice to know the velocity I did get to, but I didn't set up the chronograph. Time to try the 1/8 or 1/7 uppers 👍🤠🇺🇲
@@cw2a their calculator seems kind of off sometimes, but I think they want to err on the side of caution so people don't test their bullets in a slow twist and tell all their friends about how crappy their $60 box of Bergers shot 😆 Kind of like Hornady's lawyer load data, reducing their chances of looking like the bad guy in the public eye.
I'll try the Nosler and Hornady 68gr here before too long. Will be interesting to see the 50gr frangible that is longer than a 77 smk in the 1/9. Thanks!
That would be cool. I'm going to try it in my 1/9 upper before the 1/8 and 1/7, just to see how each barrel acts. Then try out pistol upper vs. rifle upper and different lengths in there along the way, too.
@@DummyRound okay, that's good to know. I'll need to find something it likes and load that. 6.5 Creedmoor is super hard to find here. I want to start reloading soon, trying to gather a little here and there.
@@DummyRound I have had great luck with 70 grains with a 1:7. Same load didn't stabilize in a Handi-rife 1:9 but I was only pushing them about 2700 fps.
The joys of reloading, sometimes you find a winner sometimes its a looser.
Good to know that random charge with the 55gr went well 😆

Those 55s shot nice!
That was almost more surprising than the 69gr fail lol
@@DummyRound just curious, have you ever run 69 gr factory rounds in it?
That's a negative
Im too cheap to buy the smk but my savage with a 1:9 varget and 68 and 75 is the bees knees.

Your barrel must like the lighter stuff. Good video!
This one loves 55gr but doesn't do much better past 62gr. That's OK with me. I can use cheaper components and still do well enough👍🤠🇺🇲

@@DummyRound Check online Berger has a nice tool to "test".
But as we know its about bearing surface of bullet not its weight.

My 1/9 did well with the Hornady 75 gr match .
Everybody seems to like those. Know how fast they're moving? I have some of the new MSS 75gr poly tips to try out, but they recommend a 1/7 twist 🤷♂️

This gun did not like the 69! Thanks👍🇺🇲🤠
Is it possibly the Howa 1500s? I've got a 6.5 Creedmoor that does the same thing, grouping is like 12 inches at 100 yards, 8 inches at 50.

Honestly that's better than I expected for 69 grains out of a 1:9. Thought every one would keyhole.
I'd never tried it but hadn't heard any horror stories, either. I'll come back out with the 1/7 AR one day and try again.
