- In this video I demonstrate how to play Can't Stop Loving You by Van Halen. This is a great song from the album Balance by Van Halen. Produced by the late Bruce Fairbairn, this song is a masterpiece in guitar overdubs and pick slides. Eddie really played an array of beautiful licks and coaxed some fantastic tones out from his Ernie Ball Music Man guitar. In this lesson I demonstrate all the parts including the guitar solo. On new year's day this song came up randomly and I figured I had to learn Eddie's amazing parts, so I went on RUclips to search for lessons. I realized now this video had been posted just the day before, what a coincidence. Anyway, there's a moment in the performance that really touches me, which is that Eddie plays the last chord of the bridge a little late, kind of drags it out a bit. It's such a surprising detail... feels like a touch of genius.

I love the dog in the background! I have never tried to learn this song, thanks for reminding us of it. It seems Ed really simplified things for this record. He was very unapologetic for writing a pop song.
My dog (Buki) is a trip. He really loves me, he's my best bud!! And good observation, I feel the same way, Ed wrote great pop songs and it was what it was. Pure, simple and great music! Just Ed!

@@dotkennedy7443 I need to watch that again and look for the dog! 😂. I named him Buki 13 years ago. He was a big fuzzy meatball as a puppy. Buca de beppo is an Italian restaurant near me that has meatballs the size of softballs. So he's named after a meatball. Hahaha.

Hello Marty and tysm for the amazing class. One of the most difficult parts on this song is how to take out those Harmonics. I really know that it needs a lot of work and training the Technics, but if it was easy, it wont be Eddie.
Eddie sure made things sound easy. He loved to take his little tricks make songs out of them. So original and cool!

Wow man!!! I'm a drummer, but this song has angelic meaning to me so I wanted to see how Eddie played this because they haven't played this live I don't think during the (Best of All Worlds Tour 2024) celebrating Van Halen music.

Balance is criminally underrated and it has replaced 5150 as my favorite Sammy-era album.
I love it too. Still favor 5150 but depending on my mood, Balance is a go to album!
5150 is still a wonderful album and I wore it out for 8 years, until Balance came out. Edward's tone on 5150 & especially OU812 is non-EVH. It's thin & the production quality on both albums is lacking. Balance is a return to a thicker, brownish tone & the production quality is the best of all Sammy-era albums. Keep up the great work, Marty. I enjoy your channel. All the best in 2023.
I will go so far as to say Balance is the best sounding VH album AND the fourth best album in totality (1984, FUCK, VH1).
5150 is my favorite song though and Why Can't This Be Love is my favorite single.
But Eddie's playing and tone on Balance is second to none

Excellent tutorial for a great song! Very helpfull! Noob-question: how is the technique called where Eddy is sliding his pick over a string/strings during the song, mainly intro? Would like to know to find a lesson for it. Fretsliding is not it and sliding itself results in tutorials with a metal or glass object on the players finger... Clearly Eddie was paying attention to alternative rock at that time, as much chord related playing that was in this track. As a n00b C is still not a fun chord to play though, though I am getting a lot better fast.
