I had to smile at the comment 10.04 "they're out of their heads"..I explored the tunnels about 20 years ago. I had no waders so had to go in in my jeans! There had been some builders who had been clearing the area to see if land development was possible and they had some pumps running for about a week. Even then the water was still very deep and cold. But having grown up in the area I just had to go and have a look. I would say they are dangerous and have floor drains which you can easily put your foot down. Like you all I found of interest was the old light switches!

That`s because all the good stuff is hidden underwater....need a wet suit with goggles & snorkel or even scuba gear.

Lovely wish list Michael but sadly there is nothing below the water except a thin layer of silt and junk around the access door where people have thrown stuff in over the years. The water is very still so it is very clear I went in with a car battery and headlight (before the LED revolution) so I could see the floor well. If you think about it why would the military leave anything - no point. There are a couple of drain type holes which have pipes coming out of them so these could be potentially dangerous. (Now if you want something interesting get a visit to theWW2 radio station on Ashdown forest - had a great organised visit last year - three story underground nuclear bunker, very interesting WW2 history and currently used by the police for terrorist/riot/siege/biological training - the caretaker is brilliant guide you will come away from there buzzing. Regards Garry

Thanx anyway.....Have you ever explored any central London hidey-holes?....There is said by elder residents to be a WW2 shelter underneath Avondale Park (London W11 4HG) close to Notting Hill Gate I would love to investigate.

I'd love to see some sort of reclamation effort for these tunnels... it would take some sort of serious investment to pay for all the repairs (I'm guessing you'd have to somehow plug the holes where the water gets in before you could pump it dry, which would require structural engineers to go down there in diving gear... which wouldn't be cheap), but it could become a new tourist attraction for Tunbridge Wells like the WWII bunkers at Dover. National Trust or Lottery grant, anybody...?

Definitely should be saved for the nation as a site of historic significance and interest, and as you say,a money-spinner which would pay for itself and eventually turn a profit too...Crazy to lose it.

The bit I don't get is why we don't restore sites like this as the history is important

No reason whatsoever for rats to be there unless lots of people are there throwing food around. The site is pretty much still the same today.
