Persona 5 Royal - Ideal and the Real Jazz Cover

- Decided to tap back into Persona 5 but it's better version specifically this time around. Hope yall enjoy!
My experience playing P5 Royal was kind of insane. I expected to have the same experience as I did with vanilla (which was primarily negative) and walked away with the exact opposite opinion. If the entire game was written like the 3rd semester it could've easily sat at the top of my favorite persona games. Dr. Maruki was just a fantastic character, never felt so sympathetic towards an antagonist before. The first time I heard his theme I knew I had to cover it at some point, and here we are almost a year later after my initial playthrough of Royal.
I've been doing a lot of experimenting lately with different sounds and styles but for this cover in particular, considering how simple the original song was I didn't want to do too much. It was in a key I was comfortable in so I decided to spent most of the time just kind of doing my own thing. After the inital verse and chorus, the rest of the piece is improvised up until the final chorus.
Overall it was super fun doing a cover like this and I'm definitely considering doing something in this simpler style again in the future.
I'll for sure tap in to No More What Ifs from Royal as well at some point in the future but when I'm not sure. I got another Sonic cover coming up towards the end of the month that's part of a bigger project that I'm beginning to work on with some friends. Can't share too many details yet but I can't wait to show it off when it's ready. As always, if you read this far you're a real one. @@VirtualPiusing that motif in this cover was genius! Makes me think of how in Royal, while the Shujin Thieves go to Hawaii, Maruki comes by Leblanc and crosses paths with Futaba and Sojiro. Including the motif for her palace in this is like Maruki picking up on everything she went through, even during their brief exchange. Combining his theme and her Palace’s motif, it’s like the 2 characters are having a conversation. There’s also the element that Wakaba and Maruki respective studies on cognition kinda overlap, and Futaba as a Phantom Thief can experience what their studies focused on in her time in the Metaverse.
Additionally, their personas are both...... well.......... very very ̷̨̩̯͉̊́̀̍n̴̨͉̝͍͗ỏ̸̫͍̙̾r̵̦̰̫͆̈́̈́m̶̻͍̾a̷̖͑̑̈l̵̨̟̱̲̊̈́̕ 😅 even giving them hallucinations (Futaba in her room, Maruki in the hospital) before they've actually awakened.
Personally I think it's the combination of understanding cognitive psience (a sort of "dangerous/forbidden knowledge"), and the strong cognitive warping needed to manifest a Palace within one's heart -- existing either shortly before or at the same time as their awakened Persona.
Both of them also developed their Palace in the first place from the immense grief & trauma of losing a loved one :(

Sorry if my english sound weird since its not my first language and my long rambling. Just finished listening to this and this is very very good! Masterpiece! Oh, btw, i always enjoy reading people's description so i read yours too. Gud luck for future music cover!!
And i wanna talk about how we share the same opinion about how we both feel the vanilla version feel kind like.. lacking? For me personally what feels lacking is how they do the closure. The end scene feels very animeish (oh but its not like i against something animeish, mind u) and the message they trying to show for the ending there feel weak. Persona 5 vanilla easily the bottom between 3, 4 and 5 in my personal tier.
Also, akechi. During my vanilla playthrough, i sympathise with him if we try to think of his backgroud realistically instead of just instantly think like "no matter what people say, murder is murder" like yes, thats right. But every person become who they are now depend to how they raised and exposed to the world. I love his character but not too simp. I dont even cry when he died in vanilla lol
And then there's P5R which changed everything so much better. The first thing i instantly love is the fact they make akechi's confidant from automatic to manually progress. Because for me this change is what truly impact the P5 story to me. Because in vanilla, when his confidant rank up, honestly it dont feel like they bonding over at all. Most of their talk is business stuff. About PT and society and stuff and thats it. Through manually, it finally feels like they trying to know each other. Just hangout, playing, talk some personal stuff. Big kudos to bathouse part because it truly show despite their position and fame, that moment, they are just some boys being boys competing over who can last the longest and who can dressed up more fast. And the fact akechi really show the hatred he has for joker after the long pretending. Because of this change, I ended up crying when he died even tho its the same scene with vanilla (except for some new dialogues about gloves and joker's monologue later at night) because now it truly feels like akechi is one of my (well, joker's) dear friend.
And entered maruki! Another masterpiece character that bring out P5R's shines more!! Through his good will, he brings the phantom thieves's loved one back to life in his ideal reality. And here's what i meant when i said why akechi's change is truly impact me in P5R.
In early 3rd semester, akechi leave the job of trying to make the other members realised they're in a fake reality to joker. And ofc thanks to joker now they're all together again and against maruki. But then on 2/2 when maruki revealed he's practically bring akechi to 'life' through joker's guilt or maybe wish/desire to see him alive is like a slap to me. Because later after that when they had alone talk, like how joker is to everyone by bringing them back to reality, akechi is also there for him. It destroyed me when akechi being his usual like "lets just fight him. This is not about me" and the game have you 2 TIMES for response section with all joker's answers all sound a bit hesitate.
In the end it shows that joker is also like everyone else. Find it hard to let go someone you cherish. I know akechi's only priority is that he just dont want to live in someone else's control anymore (boo to shido and yaldabaoth for causing misery to this poor man) but in the end you cant unsee the fact that he's still there for joker to bring him back to reality as a friend.
Thanks to maruki, the game finally truly show the message. We may suffer from hardships or a death of our loved one or any other things to the point it left a scar, but thanks to that, you have the capabilities to move forward and be the better person. I had some truly bad experience too and precisely bcause of that, i changed some of my way of living to the better. If that hadn't happen, I'll probably still living like a narrow minded person.
Probably because of getting older, you dont really care for happy ending. Like, everything need to be positive, perfect, happy smiling face 24/7. As long as the message come across, im satisfied. Life cant always be perfect. People cant be perfect. Mistakes happen, meeting and depart happen, but how will u take it? Idk. Thats life.

Quite literally everything you said I agree with. It obviously wouldn’t have been possible but if the entire game had been rewritten with the care and attention the third semester had, I think Royal could’ve been one of the best games ever made. It’s unfortunate how much of the writing is cliche and tropey (or animeish as you put it) but when it hits, it hits hard. Akechi’s redemption and Maruki’s entire character arc both make Royal an unforgettable experience and the themes are something that sticks with me to this day. I’m glad we share not just the same interpretation, but the same appreciation for this game and this song. Thank you for both your comment and your kind words! 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
