- Jimmie Johnson was, is, and forever shall be a legend. While we remember his 5 consecutive championships, his record tying 7th in 2016, and the all around GOAT status career he had many forget that it started out in grad and fast fashion. After a tumultuous time in the NASCAR Busch Series he proved all doubters wrong driving for Rick Hendrick and Jeff Gordon. So well that he was in serious contention for the 2002 championship. What if he won this title? This is Jimmie Johnson’s 2002 missing ring.

Do you think we’ll ever see a driver win the championship as a rookie?
Yea if you're racing in Hendrick Motorsports
@@WickedAqua facts and I have a good feeling Austin cindric might make the playoffs next year
Austin Cindrc has the best chance so MAYBE you NEVER Know
Maybe, maybe not. I'd love to see that happen, though.
Maybe Ty Gibbs
Imagine a rookie winning the championship, but couldn't win ROTY.
That would been a last dance moment where Malone won the MVP and Jordan was like
“Fine you could have that I’m gonna get this instead”
Newman could have his Winston ROTY
and Johnson could have his Winston Cup Championship
That’d be literally impossible
Jimmie Johnson won 686 races and 19 Championships
@@XLegendX-te7qlthat’s the way I remember it
Fun Fact: His first win came in the car that Jeff Gordon dominated with at Michigan the previous year.
When Jaret makes a missing ring video: *It's been 84 years.*
When was his last one? I am sorta new to the channel
@@randomchannel6008 been a hot minute. This is a series og’s remember

I felt so bad for Sterling and Mark that year, it still bums me out
I felt bad for Martin every year; former Mark Martin fan. At least 2009 was fun.
@@Dhips.Martin winning the title in 2009 would have been crazy
The fact that Johnson almost won the championship in his first full time season, shows the talent he has.
Plus a peak prime where from 2002 to 2017/18 was something you’ve never seen again. Sure it wasn’t dominant as gordon but you didn’t Gordon going for championship immediately in his Rookie year!
@@48waffles36 Then again that was Johnson's age 26 season. Gordon by that age won 2 championships and 29 races and came damn-close to winning in 96 too
No it shows how easy it is when they bunched the playoffs drivers back up for final 10 races

Watching this video makes me think that if things went well for Johnson in 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2012, we would have an 11-time NASCAR champion. In return, this would make Jimmie Johnson the GOAT without any question and set a new record that would probably never be broken.
Dude he like everyone else cheated 🤷
Dude You might want to include 2005 in this one
@@randomepic6204 if everyone cheats then it becomes fair again

@@aldouscoroza I forgot about that year. Thank you for pointing that out.
His rookie season was impressive finishing 5th in his first full season. Also he lead the point standings after the Kansas race first rookie to lead the points. I wish he won rookie of the year but Ryan Newman had a great year as well.
To be honest I thought Newman was gunna win it. Rookie of the year I mean.
Newman won ROY because Ryan's ten best finishes that were not wins were better than Jimmie's. Rookie of year had different points than the Cup Series.
Jimmie Johnson could’ve easily been an 8x or more champ.
*let that sink in.*
If it weren't for Matt, Kurt, Brad and Clint, he would be a 10 timer

2002, 2004, 2012. As a Johnson fan, I always look at these three years the most as to potential championships Jimmie could’ve had. Heck, he could’ve been a 10 time champion.
Facts he really could have been

You know that jimmie is a different person when jaret makes a missing ring on his rookie year
It’s amazing that Jimmie was a championship contender each year from 2002-2005 and then won 5 championships in a row. What a legend
It still suprises me that Newman won rookie of the year

Missing Rings? Holy shit a wave of nostalgia just crashed over me 🌊
Jimmie Johnson had a lot of chances early on in his career to win championships. 02, 03, and 04 he was pretty close. Would’ve been wild if he won it any of those years so early
2012 as well
@@hudsboy1049 IMO 2012 is more painful than 2004 because he was inconsistent and just had so much bad luck that year. The fact he was able to finish top 3 in the points after the year he HAD all around shows how truely talented he was
It was 04 when Kurt Busch lost a tire at homestead but it literally happened as he pulled into pit lane. That happens literally anywhere else on the race track an Johnson is a 8 time champion
@@zakbaker6620 no Jr would have won then but good 4 you knowing nothing about NASCAR Jimmie was good but overrated. Earnhardt was far better than Jimmie
2005 as well. He was battling Tony Stewart once again.
The GOAT almost won the championship in his first full season. Man, that was when rookies ran for championships
Lol GOAT
@@jingles123456789ify let me guess, you think Petty is goat? 🤣 or wreck em to win Earnhardt?
@@darthhull85 Johnson was goat of the system he was in. I'm not convinced he could win 7 without the chase
@@darthhull85 Dale sr is NASCAR's greatest ever Jimmie was overrated as he'll just benefited from an easier format and a cheater crew chief
The goat passed away 2-18-01 loser Jimmie is not even close
Considering the fact that Jimmie almost won the title in his rookie year shows just how dominant he would go on to be in his career.
Missing rings is back! I recommend doing an episode about Ricky Rudd's 2001 season.
Johnson's rookie year. I love it
Yeah it was so sad to see Johnson miss the title so sad he never had another chance to win a championship in his rookie season
You should make IndyCar missing rings. Missing rings: Scott Dixon 2007, Dan Wheldon 2006, Alexander Rossi 2018-2019, Juan Pablo Montoya 2015
As I've been getting more into IndyCar I've been considering it. Definitely is on my radar.
@@TheIceberg I believe Jimmie Johnson and Denny Hamlin are of similar skill. But Jimmie was able to have a lot of success with a GREAT team and teammate.
Also could you do a missing ring for Mark Martin 1990?
Finally missing rings is back
Do a video on Reed Sorenson
Yes Reed i am very agree with you.
As a JIMMAY fan, I've been waiting for this one
It's been a long time since you did a Missing Rings video
THE RETURN OF THE (missing) RING!
This and other years Johnson could have won a championship. Like 2004, 2005, and 2012. Crazy how he could have won 10 championships 😳😳😳
Love the clips from the nascar 2002 year in review videos
Not only would JJ now be an 8-time champion, but also winning his first championship in his rookie season! Just the fact he was so close... I may have been a Jeff Gordon fan first growing up... But Jimmie J Will always be the GOAT in my eyes. (Also, love the use of Nascar Thunder music in your videos! Really hits that nostalgia feel)
Sorry, but There ain't NO WAY that Jimmie is Better than Jeff! Jeff has More wins, top 5's, top 10's, pretty much topped Jimmie in most stuff.
@@chrisaycock6963 I dunno! I think Jeff and Jimmie are pretty neck and neck. Like I said, I was and still am a Jeff Gordon fan! My mom was the Jimmie fan in the house but we pulled for all the Hendricks boys.
@@CorgiButtOnWheels jeff and jimmie arent even close to the true best ever #3 dale earnhardt the real greatest ever
@@nascarfan8891 He was indeed one amazing racer. Though I respectfully disagree! Jeff and Dale had a lot of respect for eachother, that shows how on par they were together back in the day. I think Jeff and Jimmie both had a good chance at winning way more championships, Jimmie with the higher chance to surpass the King and the Intimidator! It's hard to say with Jeff. I am a die-hard 24 fan... But after the chase was implemented he just never stuck with it. (Which caused my dad to stop watching and he still whines about it! Haha!) For me, I'm not bitter about the chase or *most* changes NASCAR has made... Some were good. some stunk and still stink. But I'm forever gonna be a NASCAR and Jeff Gordon fan! Well... Hendricks fan too!
@@chrisaycock6963 championships are what matters dude. He used to test setups in the early races and actually race in the playoffs. If he races Winston like Jeff did for longer, he’d have more wins. He also called it quits pretty young.
Thanks for the upload!
If he won the championship in 2002, i feel like he would’ve peaked too soon
Plus he lost out on ROTY to Ryan Newman too
"Its going to be a good time"- The Man
It's insane to know that if things went right for Johnson in 2002, 2004, and 2005. He would have had 10 championships, instead of 5 in a row, it would be 7 in a row.
I became a fan of his around Pocono 02 and been a fan ever since. People seem to forget how good he was rookie year and even led points.
Earnhardt was better loser
Now THIS is a throwback and a half
All I can think of while watching this video was, "Hey, I know that paint scheme and car from NASCAR Thunder 2003!"
As a JJ Fan, yes 2002 was a Missing Ring, do one as Well for 2012 and 2003
We need the playoffs….. and stages….cause the points races are boring… YEA RIGHT.. this video just solidified my opinion
Can you please do Missing Rings: Kyle Busch 2017?
If Jimmie wins a Winston cup format championship no doubt people would look at him differently when compared to dale and Richard
Plus that would shut up every Jeff Gordon fan in the world.
@@48waffles36 idk maybe people just value that Gordon actually put up the best 36 race season in 04, 07, and 14 while Johnson put up only the best 10 race run in 07, 08, 10, and 16. No I'm not saying we should go back to the Winston but just look at the full season results for a year like 07 or 16 and tell me he was actually the best driver that year
Dale was better than Jimmie ever was
@@nascarandbowlingfan3888 by which standard? Jimmie won more races, arguably in a more competitive era, in less seasons (although with more races each season), with stronger teammates (whose cars were as fast as his)
@@simoneburini4036 Jimmie would be at most a 4× without the chase/playoffs
Plus had a cheater crew chief and the best equipment his entire career and despite all that only has 7 more wins than Dale
If Dale had gotten to finish his career he
has more wins than Jimmie
A new missing ring, OMG🤩
They say the 48 team is to young to win a championship I say we're fucking going for it -Chad Kanus
That’s a badass quote! Even as a young team, this WAS a championship contender team from the second HMS announced a 4th car in HMS.
THE greatest!...no contest!
Next missing ring: dale earnhardt 1995/dale jarrett 1997
Like the Racing Champion card said 2002 A Season To Remember. But Jimmie got a lot of Jeff's cars he ran in 2001, like at Dover.
Lightning McQueen 2005 season next please
I think Matt Kenseth in 2002 deserves his missing ring because he was the winningest driver. It gets me to wonder, what if Kenseth was consistent in 2002, would he win the championship?
Imagine JJ had those missing rings from '02 and '05. A 9-time champ would've been nuts.
See, the rookies of today just aren’t as good. Johnson was a legend
Missing Rings: Matt Crafton 2015
Pain
He was driving Jeffs cars that he won the previous years championship with, that's why he was so good.
Man sterling marlin I remember winning over and over that one year and then getting injured and Jamie McMurray made his debut in the coors 40, that championship looked like it was gonna be his. That being said Jimmie is a super nice dude everytime I met him but damnit I couldn’t stand him because I knew he got the better equipment over Jeff’s and that just made me mad. Jeff should’ve had 120 wins and 8 championships.
Jeff Gordon is co owner of the 48 car he is the reason Johnson got the ride
I actually mentioned how JJ got gyped out of ROTY in 2002.
Had to have been close in the voting.
@@njj9555 Voting has nothing to do with Rookie of the Year in NASCAR. Back then, the rookies had a separate points system & standings from the regular points standings. They based it on their 15 best finishes of the year.
Nowadays, ROTY is simply the driver who finishes highest in points.
The fact that he was 26-27 years old in his first season makes me think what he could've done 5-6 years prior.
I just really think about Alex Bowman to clinch NASCAR championship crown this is going to be exciting similar type like Alan Kulwicki he did in 1992
How about Newman 2003
Since he won the most that year but lost the championship due to DNFs
I wouldn't put Johnson even close to the greatest ever conversation. Yeah, he won seven championships but they were all Chase/Playoffs format championships which really aren't worth as much as an old season long aggregate championship. The GOAT conversation includes Petty, Earnhardt, Gordon, Yarborough, and Pearson. Johnson is in the group right outside those five.
Many IRL rings for Johnson will come.
If anybody got screwed in that year other than Jeff Gordon is Jimmie Johnson win the title he would only got credit for half a championship since he got all of Jeff Gordon's cars from the year before which by the way Jeff Gordon win the title the year before for those who don't remember
Best rookie season in nascar history
Nah. In my opinion, it was Dick Hutcherson’s rookie year that was the best.
