Mac, the Houston Zoos 2 year old Asian elephant whose mischievous nature endeared him to thousands of Zoo guests died last night following a brief but valiant struggle with the elephant herpesvirus. The entire Zoo staff is absolutely devastated. Its difficult to put into words and describe the attachment that has developed over the past two years. This is a terrible loss especially for the elephant keepers and veterinary medical staff who cared for Mac during his time with us.

So sad...I will miss him too :( I was at the zoo on one of my regular Sunday visits the day he was born and he was a very welcomed addition after Bella's passing. It was great watching him grow and learn. He was something I looked forward to on every visit which was sometimes weekly just to decompress from life's stresses. Mac's playful character always left ya with a smile :) My heart goes out to all of his keepers and those enriched by him.
