We went away from cable 3 years ago and never looked back. We get 24 channels OTA and started with an antenna in the attic and a Tablo with 4 tuners and 2TB drive. We run it wireless and can watch it on any TV in the house flawlessly. We have heard about people having problems but that has not been our experience. Last year I decided to put in a server and I added an HDHomerun to it when I built it. Our server is a TerraMaster 2 bay with 2 10 TB hard drives and an HDHomerun connected to it. I spent the winter this year digitizing our DVD and Blu Ray collections (dedicated laptop and time). Now we have TV, MOVIES, and recordings on any TV in the house at the touch of a button. It is the way to go. We now have more TV than we can probably watch. Our son watches his DVD collections over and over again and we don't miss cable TV at all. Freedom. Great video.
I've been thinking about ditching cable. I do a lot of streaming & cable is so expensive. There are some cable channels that I want, so I'll be looking at subscribing to the limited # of cable channels that I want individually. I'm sure I'll save a ton of money! Just need the rest of the family to buy-in...

The Recast is awesome. I bought the 1TB one on Black Friday (discounted a lot) and love it. The DVR works great. I researched many devices including Tablo which a lot of people are having problems with, TIVO devices, Channel Master, etc...
I pulled the trigger today on the small version on sale at $129. We'll see if it's worth it.
I use HDHomeRun Connect 4 tuners with Channels DVR. Works great on Apple and Fire TVs. Commercial skipping on all recordings and has the most Tivo-like experience I've found to date. You do pay $8/month, but I figure I can use it for almost 3 years and still be ahead of the Recast and not be tied to only FireTVs.

Well I've been debating Recast/Tablo/HDHomeRun. At the current discounted $229 for 4 tuner recast, it's not that bad. It's cheaper than the other options like Tablo, and HDHomerun, unless you already have externals HD's and a Plex lifetime sub. Then I'd lean towards HDHomeRun base on flexibility. Add space, tuners, and the ability to edit out commercials with post processing a plus. I want to believe that Amazon is going to keep adding features to make this the best option and not abandon it, but we'll see.
Recast main bonus is they don't charge a monthly/lifetime membership to download TV show scheduling

I have one of these and like it. If you have a 4k Firestick or the newest cube and a very good router you should see good results. Older firesticks will load slow but the quality is fine once the signal gets started. 4K sticks will buffer for about two seconds before the signal shows up. Don't pay full price. It is often $150 or less.
Despite this 'unbiased' review, I recently bought the 2 tuner Fire TV Recast and am pleased. Pause, Rewind, Fast Forward is a plus while watching and while recording. I'm able to stream OTA to all 6 (six) of my TV's that are connected with a Fire TV device without freeze or buffering problems. I also picked up more OTA channels on my Recast than with just my OTA antenna on my TV. There are only two who live in my house, so watching only on 2 TV's is not a problem. BUT, even if you needed more than 2 TV's (for other family or guests), all you need is to have an OTA antenna on the other TV's, switch to that input and you're still able to watch OTA channels independently without issue. The Channel Guide is FREE.... not free on on some other streaming tuners. The DVR is also FREE... not so on some devices like HomeRun HD and others who charge an annual fee for DVR. Scheduling programs on the fly or in advance is a breeze. Recorded picture quality on my Sony 43 inch TV looks of same quality at the OTA Live stream. Recast has a USB port for extra storage for recordings. I can also use Voice control to change channels or record. OTA channels are available through "On Now" on Fire TV home page, or integrated in the TV Guide... sweet. I'm able to watch on my Tablet, phone, and this summer I will be looking forward to watch on my TV on my outdoor patio. The downside is it's expensive, but after having thrown away 3 different brand tuners (approx $35-$49) because they stopped working (always after the year warranty runs out), I think this was worth it.

How do and or can I pair and or connect the recast to my TV that has already the prime TV app downloaded on it?

I just need something that play my local tv channels my vizio tv doesn’t have a antenna jack which sucks what can I use other then fire recast
I bought a Channel Master CM-5020, the Recast, and a Fire TV 4k Stick..
Would have been nice if the recast could output directly to the TV, instead I had to put a splitter to go from the antenna to the Recast and to the TV.
The recast also doesn't have an off button (nor a remote for that matter).. and at some point during the splitter install, I must have bricked it while pulling the plug, because it got stock booting (pulsing blue led). I swapped the 500gb hard-drive with a 75gb I had (formatted as ext4) and it's working.
The worst part, however, is the Fire TV 4k stick.. the interface is cluttered with apps, free channels I don't want, and paid services I don't have. Would love to see a basic app that connects to the Recast and lists my favorite OTA channels.. that's it.
Do any of these devices allow you to easily record live-streams of internet broadcasts? Or a way to pre-download 4k content from A streaming service? Kind of a n00b with this stuff.
Can one Recast dvr be played on 2 different TV 's with one Fire Cube, or do I need a separate Fire Cube for the other TV to use the dvr?
And how do I hardwire/plug in a hdmi cable for my TV to the Recast dvr?

As you say, Tablo does the same thing, but works with Roku, Fire, Apple TV, Android TV, LG, Samsung. Who needs this to be limited to Fire TV? Tablo will stream to 1080, works with Ethernet, it was the easiest product to setup I have ever used.
I have a question hope this can be answered. I have the fire TV cube and I can't switch to cable cause I don't have a cable box. I hard line cable to TV any suggestions that could help so I can switch to watch TV. Thanks for any help with this issue.

Bravo, First one to mention the two stream limit. I'm all in on the Fire ecosystem and will not buy one.
Yeah. That's not a bad thing until it is. (And for me that was pretty quick.)
better off getting a Tablo 4 Tuner or wait and get a Tablo Quad(the quad I suspect is faster in most ways than the existing 4 tuner and can store a SATA HDD inside it which I suspect is faster than using USB but will have to wait and see). you don't suffer from the Fire TV limitation. or the Tuner limit(unless it's recording 4 things at once which as far as I know you can still watch what is recording. your real limits are your network structure. but if you are getting something like this let's face it. most of the time you will be watching recordings which while transcoded look pretty darn good as long as the station is coming in good.
Why the hell do you need to record 4 shows at once?
You didn't mention that you don't have to pay for the TV guide service on the Recast, so the higher price, especially if you can get one on sale, is a lot more in line with Tablo than you might think.

On Sale ! Definitely do it ! I pre ordered my ReCast 4 tuner @ $ 279 but on black Friday deals I think they had it for $40-60 off ! [I just wanted to support the product]
I bought the two-tuner for $179. At this moment, Amazon has the two-tuner for $189 and the four-tuner for $229. At that price, if you've already got FireTVs in your home and the two-stream limitation isn't an issue, I think they're a good buy. At the normal price, it is questionable.

Does the Recast record other apps live shows like on Pluto TV, Plex, HBO MAX, discovery +?
Good review. Another limitation is that it is done all over wireless. it doesn't appear to integrate into a gigabit network for viewing your content. So folks that don't have ac wireless clients may have issues. And it's limited to a 1 TB drive. I have Fire TV in the living room, but I went with HD Homerun for many reasons, including PLEX Live TV and DVR integration, wired gigabit integration, and the ability to watch on most any device (PC, tablet, phone, TV, etc.). I also have a Tivo Roamio, and Tivo is fantastic, but it's expensive, it's limited to one screen (unless you buy Tivo minis), and you have guide fees with most models.
Amazon just released an upgrade that allows an external HD to be connected to the Recast. They say that users cannot select where recordings will go, but at least the 1TB limit is gone. My only other potential concern, living in a household of 4, is the 2 TV limit... I'll have to think about that. Otherwise, I have FireTV devices on every TV, so this could be a good addition.
Here's a basic question...I know that which channels you're able to get depends on your location, antenna, etc. but generally speaking, what kind of channels does the recast allow you to get? Are you limited to only local broadcast channels like abc, cbs, nbc, fox? Or could it allow you to get cable-type channels like cnn, hallmark channel, bravo, tnt, lifetime, a&e? Thanks
Why is there no DVR type device similar to the Recast that will record STREAMED content? I know some streaming services have their own DVRs in their arsenal, so to speak, but what can one do if you wish to record on your own outside of the streaming service's recorder? Thanks! ✌♐

What if I don’t use an antenna and use this device to get rid of a cable box and use the XFINITY coax to the recast in place of an antenna?

Is there a box that does what AirTV does with Sling for Philo or other streaming ,services? I swapped emails with HDHomeRun, SiliconDust, Tablo, TiVo, and Connections. According to them, I would still have separate TV guides with their products. I want one consolidated TV Guide for OTA and the streaming services we use. Thank you.

I travel a lot. Would it be possible to set up my Recast at my home state (NJ) and being able to watch local news when I travel to a different State ? Do they have Geo fencing to prevent me from doing so ?
How is this any better as far as reception compared to a regular atenna.
Can you remote login into your like the Tablo? Tablo subscription version allows watch remotely.

I have seen this before and liked it before. I am looking at DVR of OTA again. I have heard that Amazon is no longer going to sell the Tablo because of supposed copyright issues. Makes no sense to me but I am unable to get Tablo at Tablo (well, the Tablo Quad anyway). So I am considering Tablo or the Plex & HDHR options. Any advice?
Do you have to use a satellite is it like the fire sticks ?

I just can't make it work when I'm not connected to my home network. It says please connect to recast. Sometimes looks like it's going to start streaming and then gives me an error that says the recast is not in range. Anybody having those issues?
Felipe Jimenez if you’re trying to watch it from a fire tv it needs to be on the same network but you can watch it on the fire tv app from anywhere.
Tablo I'm not fan of it and USB drive are more prone to fail they should gone with internal hard drive, Recast only has dual hardware trasoncder that why it can only do two steam and I'm sure the internal hard drive is not upgrade sure but it sure be nice to see a teardown of this product, As for the HDHomeRun it fine way go for LiveTV direct steam but if what to rec you need to build a server at leases there are lot of option out there.

There's no native Vizio app for Tablo, unfortunately. But you probably could just chromecast it on over?

How is it that I've listened to all these reviews and no one or few have made the limitation of the 4 tuners clear? Thanks! (I think its because many focus on the two tuner rather than 4. It could be I've not been listening hard enough. But i say it didn't stand out.) I just looked it up. You can't watch 4 shows at a time. You CAN RECORD 4 shows at A TIME, but the most you can watch is 2. Although it does seem you can watch these 2 shows on multiple devices.

does it work with Smart TVs?
This thing doesn't have a HDMI out like a normal STB? So you have to buy this plus a fire stick to run on a single tv. I wonder if there will be a monthly program guide fee.

Ok I currently have AirTV to send OTA channels to 2 TVs (bedrooms), and Air Player main TV watching room. Right now that works for us. Is this basically Air TV with a DVR inside? what if I already have Air Tv and an Air Player?
They're pretty much the same thing - this is just tied directly into the Amazon Fire TV OS.

A little misleading about the price. The cheapest Tablo costs $140. That is considerably cheaper than the reCast but in order to watch content on your phone or out of the house, or for TV guide service on the Tablo, you have to pay an additional $150. This service comes free with the reCast. So really, for full features, the reCast is cheaper
Cheapest Tablo also requires an external hard drive for DVR functionality. Recast comes with one.

One of the Awesome things about USA HDTV, digital, 1080 resolution and 5.1 HiFi channel sound, ... All for Free ! Great for concerts and sports games.

@@steveh4114 We have many, many channels that are digital OTA, no analogue any longer. I think analogue died about 5 or 6 years ago here. I personally don't watch much TV but my wife does. England.
it's digital except for government broadcasts for some reason they reserve analog for their own purposes now

Let's say you have BASIC cable, no digital box or anything like that, just coax into your TV. Can this be used to record THAT, or is this OTA only?
No. This is over-the-air only. (Look at HDHomerun Prime if you wanna record Cable.)

The latter. The Amazon Prime Video app on other platforms doesn't get you access to the Recast stuff. (At least it didn't at the time I published this video.)
Extremely unhappy with Fire TV, Recast and Amazon. I feel this product was rushed to market before all the problems were worked out. The first year I went through 3 remotes. They are one inch wide and four inches long, very easy to drop. I had to paint a big yellow stripe across the bottom of the remote just so I could find it if I put it down on a dark surface. After six months Fire TV Recast stopped working, still under the warranty period. Over the course of several weeks I called Amazon repeatedly but no one could fix it. Some days I spoke with 6 or 7 different people, for 2-3 hours, at the call center on each call. One man actually hung up on me when I asked him to quit interrupting me so I could explain to him what my Fire TV was doing . I finally plugged in an Ethernet cord and it started streaming again. When I called back and reported this they still couldn't figure out what was wrong. So, they finally transferred me to a supervisor (what took so long?) and the first words he said were: "Hi I'm Brian and I'm the supervisor of the Fire TV department. We're brand new and don't even have a dedicated phone line. The other departments haven't receive any training on the Fire TV." #@&+@! Why was I made to waste time talking to people who had no clue? Why wasn't I offered a new Recast immediately? Why did the Amazon call center say they are not the manufacturer (they are and I found that out by asking Best Buy) and not responsible. Brian finally sent me a new (?) Recast and I returned the broken one. So bottom line is: the wireless feature of the Fire TV Recast stopped working after six months and it took me about 2 months to get this taken care of. Yes, Brian was awesome and I truly appreciate him. But I will be going to another option when this OTA DVR stops working again. There are just too many other choices and more coming every day. Amazon is too busy putting their fingers into every pie available to adequately build and support new tech IMO. I highly DO NOT RECOMMEND this product line. Did you see the comments about the new OTA antenna Amazon is offering? Amazon is putting a card into the antenna box asking buyers to leave a 5 star review? All the other reviews are lukewarm about the antenna. Hmmmmmm

Why do I need this if I can use the Locast App? DVR i guess is the only reason.

tablet should work fine . just download fire tv app. and follow instructions ,,easy 2 do !

Depends on what the channels are, of course. I get a ton, but only really care about the majors - ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC and PBS.
You buy a ReCast so you can RECORD, DVR Free TV. To get free TV all you need is a simple UHF antenna connected to a TV that's at least 5-10 years old. Free TV HDTV is awesome and you can connect a stereo for HiFi 5.1 channel sound -- but to record this awesomeness you need a device like a ReCast (or Tablo, or Tivo ).

NO QAM SUPPRT! My cable company left me with really good Free QAM with over 60 channels after I cut the cord as long as I use them for internet so I am going to stick with my HDHomeRun, Cheaper and better featured. It is a shame I use fire sticks in most of my house but the HD HOME works on those, My phone, Tablet, Shield TV, Xbox, PC etc, etc. I do not see why you would get this IMHO
the recast is good only if you have a Fire device however for most people 2 connections is not enough
