Obsidian tools and projectile points were used in religious ceremonies by some Indian tribes. They were very valuable as trade goods throughout the Americas. You described the origin of them exactly and removed any mystery about them. These were mined by neolithic people who had not yet mastered the creation of metal implements.
Yes, it reminded me of similar pits found in chalk deposits here in the UK which were neolithic flint mines.

I purchased one during my trip there last year. The colours faded almost immediately and the weaving came apart within 2 weeks. I contacted the weaving woman by email asking for a refund and she said I would have to come back to Honduras to get the refund. I’m not going to travel all the way back from Canada to get a few dollars refunded. Beware of this weaving scam.

@@lmklopez it fell apart within 2 weeks! It’s not unreasonable to expect it to last longer.
HI Noraly, The theory about obsidian mines makes the most sense. The obsidian fragments are found in pyroclastic flow deposits that occur throughout Honduras, Nicaragua and Guatemala. They were deposited during a very large pulse of explosive volcanism that occurred in the Central America region during the Miocene. We sampled these deposits in the 1990’s and conducted a study of their geochemistry. It’s interesting that archeologists use the geochemical chararcteristics of obsidian tools to trace the location of the source mines as each of the volcanic deposits have a unique set of trace and major element geochemistry. Obsidian is a perfect material for these types of studies as they remain relatively unaltered for millions of years.

Only Noraly can get make me spend 25 minutes looking at holes in the ground. Really enjoy that she finds the unique things in the area and not necessarily the tourist traps. Though these might be literally tourist traps if not paying attention to where you are walking. ☺

I first watched advantures with Alaska now on half of season in Africa. Neglected all tv shows i follow because of Noraly.
A low-key episode, with local people and non-touristy sites. Makes me appreciate Noraly's story weaving ability: local crafts, geology field trip, melding into unexplained archaeological phenomena. X-File meets Nancy Drew and Percy Fawcett. Kind of creeps up on you and pulls you in.

I think the theory that the holes are Obsidian Mines makes a lot of sense. As you were talking about it I couldn't help thinking about the old Flint Mines that you can see on the Chalk hills here in southern England. Like the Obsidian, the Flint was used to make weapons and tools prior to the age of metal working.
Wow the colors on those woven blankets were so powerful. And we got a cool geologic mystery. Another fantastic episode, inspiring and educational!

Hello Norally, fascinating video as always. Initially I underestimated the first story, as a dude, I was thinking, ok.. so I have to push through the girly stuff and get to the cool stuff I knew was coming at the second part of the video, but couple minutes into the weaving segment I was completely fascinated by it. The second story was really cool as well, great atmosphere with some X-Files type of music, very entertaining!

I was thinking ancient volcanic tree molds. You see these in Hawaii. An ancient giant forest could have been swamped by a fast-moving lava flow and the trees slowly burned away leaving the holes.
That makes sense, especially since most of the holes didn’t seem big enough for a person to get down or a person and a bag of obsidian to get back up.
Of the comments I’ve seen this makes the most sense.
@@catrionatalbot That was my thought too. The lava shards laying around would be normal for such a place, It's just all overgrown with new forestation.
@@kristinlong2278 I've seen enough of them in my life and just like this in old growth forest here on the Big Island of Hawaii.
Some of the lava shards could be from the actual lava molds that have long since collapsed.
Aha... Had been thinking about those holes after watching the video...and at one point, was even considering in my mind that those might have been like volcanic steam vents which at some point could include shards of minerals, but your explanation seems very logical... Yes, thanks for sharing your mind with us 🥰

Honduras is 80 per cent mountains and we have many volcanoes, but all are dormant. Our three neighbors sure have a lot, and earthquakes too, but not Honduras.

So true. Most travelers just stay on or near the PanAmerican highway through Mexico and Central America. They just experience military checkpoints, police checkpoints, swarms of poor kids at gas stations begging, and endless tolls to pay. They come away with a negative impression of the country as a result.

You've got me looking at motorcycles again. I'm a strange American who doesn't own a car and rides bicycles everywhere. Your channel has my rekindled my wanderlust. Love what you're doing! I've relived some of my travels through South and Central America by watching you and it's brought back memories. Can't wait for Mexico!!
Get a motorcycle. I grew up riding horses, bikes and motorcycles then didn't ride for 20 years. Thought I was to old, then by buddy took me riding on his motorcycles. The next day I started looking and bought one 3 days later. Been riding for two years and it's pure freedom and adventure. I've seen so much on our long rides. Can't wait, been saving money, for a 3 or 4 month summer ride. There is so much to see here in our country.
Do it ! I just did after years of riding when I was younger , and it was itchy that pushed me over the edge lol bless her , picked up a baby gs 310, similar size to Alaska , but did spend heavy on good safety gear
I see you are an avid cyclist and that is good...you know how reckless cars can be . But , I would search out a good motorcycle safety class and start out on less traveled roads until you learn good braking and turning skills . I've seen riders that make me cringe . Pairing up with a safe knowledgeable rider is a good idea ...get a good helmet , gloves , boots and jacket with pads . 👌 PK

Noraly, i am Canadian, just want to tell you about drones rules in Canada. If you dont take an extensive long course to get permit to fly drones then you need to make sure that your drone is under 250gr. Under 250gr, you do not need permit to fly drone. DJI mini Mavic or Mavic 2 are under the weight permitted.. Always trying to help so you can have fun on your journey. Michael
