  • This is the video to watch to learn some techniques for painting urban scenes. I finally found my method for painting night scenes. In this piece I used the following palette: Titanium White, Burnt Sienna, Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Orange, Cadmium Yellow Pale, and Perm. Alizarin Crimson. For my medium I used cold wax medium. It makes the paint dry to a matte finish...which I love.
    This way of working eliminates the glare you usually get from using linseed oil or similar medium.
    Thank you for watching the video.

    Great demo, love nocturnes! This one reminded me of an old shop we used to go to as kids that sold games, magic tricks, toys and gags. Fascinating watching you paint this Bruce!

    Always like your work it seems to resonate with me. I think this painting deserves a much larger version.

      Thank you. Some of these could definitely be enlarged. I would need more visual info to achieve that and have thought about using info from a daytime picked in conjunction with a night photo. We'll see.

    I really like this one....a lot. Your work is always interesting (and well done of course) and your subject matter is very unique. As an aside, a few months ago I saw a painting on the internet that I really liked so I copied it. A few weeks later I was browsing through your paintings on your web site and there it was! I had copied one of your paintings without knowing who the artist was. Your painting is titled "Slow Drift" (the motel room scene).

      Now that's a story! :) You can read my thoughts on that painting on my Instagram page (@habowskistudio). It's not too far down from my recent posts. It's one of my favorite interiors.

    I thought this was Hopper-esque as well. Great job with a difficult subject. Do long night exposures with a digital camera throw the colors off at all? I remember with film, you used to have to use 'night' film. If you used daylight film, all the colors would be changed. Lots of lovely greenish lights!

      Hi Rich - I'm not sure about the color thing on the camera. I just keep it on AWB(auto white balance) and hope for the best. Most night scenes, for me, are about the contrasts, so perfect color is not too big of a concern. Using the cable shutter release and a tripod yield good results for me .

    How do you decide what to charge for your paintings?

    • @habowskistudio2724
      @habowskistudio2724  5 лет назад +1

      Hi - There are MANY viewpoints on this pricing thing, but I'll take a shot at it :) When I was starting out, I didn't charge much, I used a balance of time it took, cost of framing, incidential costs (picture wire, screw eyes, etc.) and came up with X price. As I got better( I recommend looking at lots of art...new and dead guys , to see how your work might compare) I then dropped the time it took attitude and now I believe the uniqueness of the work carries the bigger burden of price....the time it took doesn't matter. If you paint a lot you are bound to improve and become more efficient in completing a work in a short time. I look at what I paint, how I paint it (my style), and then a bit of it is the track record (shows,awards,etc.)….I feel it plays a little in a customer pulling the trigger on buying. It shouldn't...but it does sometimes :( So....my pricing breaks down this way - 1. Cost of framing. Double the price for markup. After all….you did have to take time to order it or go get it. All these little costs add up. I learned very early to make my own professional looking frames since I paint a lot. Saves a ton, yet I charge the going rate for that type of frame per ft. 2. Factor in gallery commission - Typically the comm. is 50 % 3. Factor in your honest opinion of how unique your work is and that should play into 40% or so of the price (my humble opinion). If you are trying live off your art, then percentages of your living costs should be built in also. If you are unsure how to start use this basic formula. Time took to complete at x dollars an hour ( include painting it, varnishing, framing it) X Cost of framing ( if frame cost 40.00..double to 80.00 for markup...just like a store)X shipping costs(if shipping to a place)= Price Hope all of this helps :)

      Thanks so much Bruce, for the thorough answer, I just started painting about a year and a half ago and I'm not sure that what I'm doing is even worth selling.
