  • Learn how I paint a miniature nocturne in this oil painting demonstration. The oil colors I used for this piece were: Titanium White, Burnt Umber, Ultramarine Blue, Perm. Alizarin Crimson, and Sap Green. I used a light tone color pencil to sketch my subject in so that I knew where the dark colors were going to go. You do not want to sully your light tones by getting dark paint in them. You want them clean and crisp. Edge control was really important, also, in order to maintain some realism and depth.

    I've been watching you for a long time ( basically from your very beginnings on RUclips ) and I'm still learning from you ….thanks for the time you take to produce IMO one of the best painting videos on RUclips. This particular painting lets me realize that I don't have to paint every freaking detail and to make it my own, I have a big problem with stressing over information or ( lack there of ) in a painting....I think you should do a small tutorial painting of a very busy ( to much information ) image from a photo or Plein Air and show us how to break it down and sort out important elements to add or subtract . I and I'm sure others struggle with this problem also..... Thanks again and hope you and your family have HAPPY AND SAFE HOLIDAYS !

      Thanks for the positive feedback! Good idea on the tutorial suggestion. I'll see if I can make one that isn't too long, yet informs artists of possible techniques. Have a great holiday. Also...THANK YOU for sticking with me since the beginning....seems like eons ago :) I'm always trying to improve content.

    Love nocturnes and this one was amazing. I liked your feelings on the basketball hoop, they really resonated with me. Your teaching style is wonderful, learned so much from this one. Thanks, and Happy Holidays to you for 2021!

    There is something about your style that I really like......and I just can't put my finger on it. Maybe (as you implied) it's a combination of impressionist style brush work while still maintaining the structural integrity of your subject matter. Anyway, whatever it is, please keep putting out these videos. I love them.

      Thanks for the comment...means a ton. I'm not trying for glitz and glamour in my videos, just some honest painting and info that I hope will help artists out there.

    Excellent job! I really like the orange shovel it really makes the painting. I like how the trees are in the background too.

      Thank you for watching ! Living here in Maine it would be a crime not to put a orange snow shovel in there :) When I'm out collecting ref. pics in the winter, you see them all over the place.

      Thank you. I'm finding that the hardest part is what color floater frame to put on it ..haha :) I think I'll explore a few more paintings with a dark base. I am trying to marry my ridged painting style (especially urban subjects) with more painterly techniques to arrive at a more fluid and lively painting.

      @@habowskistudio2724 yeah I understand that, it took me a while to when I paint outside to figure the best style to paint in..I just keep it really loose, scetch style really then study it when I'm in the studio what style I want it in, so yeah I her ya 😁👍🎨

      Thanks Judy! Oh no!...I didn't know my undercover CIA name was compromised...ha ha :) :) I'm glad you enjoyed the video. My hope is to include the reference scene pic in the corner of the frame. I think it will help people see how I edit, etc.

    Hi Bruce. Love this painting, really interesting. Do you go out with a particular motif in mind when you paint a subject like this or just ride around until you spot something that looks like it has potential?

    • @habowskistudio2724
      @habowskistudio2724  5 лет назад

      Hi Rich - 90% of the time I just walk/drive around until I find something that surprises me and intrigues me. The hard part with nocturnes is not looking like a weirdo taking pics at night :) and using camera settings that can capture nuances without the use of a tripod. I find that with my DSLR camera...if I set it on 800 speed film, I can get a decent pic to work with. If I have detail troubles I can supplement it with a day shot of the scene.

    • @richrobertson9457
      @richrobertson9457 5 лет назад

      Yeah, even in the daytime people want to know what you're up to if they see you photographing their house. Hard to be discreet and still get the shot you want sometimes....

    hey man good stuff. you touched on the exact things I struggle with currently. Finding a balance between Impressionism and realism. Although it is very hard thing for me to not refine too much and to find the right brush marks to leave. watching your videos I have been a lot more observant , while I'm painting, of planning out my composition more beforehand. Im now conscience of every shape and line I make and how it directs the eye to the focal point. Good info to remember. Thanks for the vids. Check out my paintings on my channel if you like. Btreacy Art would love your input. Good day Sir

      Hi Brandon - Thanks for watching the video. Yes....it is hard to find a balance of refined shapes and painterly qualities. Lately I've been experimenting (with my urban and structural form stuff) with beginning with an abstract mark making/color beginning and then sketching my subject out and leaving parts of the original block in showing to represent elements in my subject. So far, so good. It allows the painting to guide you a bit.

      Hi Brandon - I checked out your channel. Interesting. I liked the animation books....done a couple back in the day. You've got some diverse skills with the painting, computer, etc. stuff. I think the layering skill in the paint program helps you in your oil painting...gives an understanding of transparent and opaque use of color. Two recommendations. 1. When doing voice over, don't let music over power your voice (heard that in one video). 2 . Try more interaction in your videos with showing you..talking about an aspect of the project, then going back to the art...mix it up. Maybe the RUclips algorithm will see face and recommend on people's feeds...thus more views? (I'm no expert...just idea) Ooops one more recommendation. I see you have low views. Have you researched how to do tags to be found? Good luck!

      Hey thanks alot. You know i never thought about how the layering feature could relate to painting techniques such as glazing which by the way i really need to learn to utilize. Sometimes when the paint is dry it can be kind of scary to add another layer of color on top like that. I also think i have a hard time committing to contrast. Like making the darks as dark as they should be i guess because it's a little bit trickier to be undone.
      As far as the voice over, you know i just realized that i just don't like the sound of my voice. I tried the whole RUclips thing a little more passionately at one point but now it's more or less just an online diary where i can watch my progress. Maybe i will record more plein airs tho i like the idea of being in nature. Anyways thanks for your suggestions. Oh one more thing could you suggest a good varnish and would you recommend spray on or brush on?

    • @habowskistudio2724
      @habowskistudio2724  5 лет назад +1

      Hi - I tried spray varnish....didn't like it. You could get by on a small (9x 12 and lower)one, but I suggest brushing on. I would also suggest practicing on a painting that is finished enough, but that you are not keeping. Then it is no harm, no foul. You could buy a satin varnish and a gloss varnish and see what you like best. If the painting is big enough, you could varnish half satin and the other half gloss...see what you like. Lately my fav. is Windsor and Newton Satin Varnish. I've used more glossy in the past, but don't like the reflective quality....especially on dark pieces. I use the cheap "chip" bristle brushes at Home Depot and varnish several pieces at once. They sell "varnish" brushes, but I have never had any luck getting them super clean, thus very quickly the hairs stick together a bit.Hope all this helps.

      Awesome thanks for the info. I do have a problem with my shadows being too reflective. I think I'll try the satin as well. Appreciate your time and knowledge
