I was watching the movie 'Stuck in love' and was so amazed by the footage that I had to look up what camera they had used. It was an Arri Alexa, hence, that brought me here and my god this is awesome.
Getting mine today and could not be more excited / nervous. It’s been a director’s dream to own an ARRI but also a big responsibility to make even on the investment (production bundle).
@@chrishultgren777 It has nothing to do with light on Set. Shadow is a natural part of an image, you don't want this area to disappear completely with a strong contrast or become grainy... Most cameras can't show fine detail in shadows as this camera does!

Hi @paperworkpictures - it's both. The new ALEV4 sensor can capture 2.5 stops more dynamic range than the ALEV3 sensor, and we also had to develop the new LogC4 gamma curve to be able to hold that dynamic range, as the LogC3 curve was only designed for around 15 stops. LogC4 can be used with the ALEV3 sensor cameras too, in post, through the REVEAL workflow. More info at arri.com/reveal
Amazing low-light images, remind me of the best Ektachrome film roles which have around 15 f-stops of dynamic range. Ektachrome image quality color and dynamic range were impressive so this must be even better. I would love to see a western shot with those new enhanced color capabilities.
Arri , you know when it's there. extremely precise in pixel noise(everything, from lo to hi-light , is captured very firmly)and pixel clock of the sensor(super low jitter in pixel read out, which gives a super steady, precise,“quiet”,firm, grand, epic and spectaculer motion looking). comparing to sony venice, you will find sony's a lot video-like looking in motion due to a high-jitter pixel read-out sensor(sony consumer cameras like A73 will have even more jitter in sensor, which gives serious artifacts problem in motion: lack of uniformity ,“noisy” and less useful information in motion).
The other day I tested the sony a7s2 to film clouds colored slightly red during blue hour. You can get a great picture but as soon as it moves gently the artifacts are extremely visible. You can't push the footage much at all if you want to hide them.
@@LarsRichterMedia Right. If there's a moving shot, putting a Sony on gimbal won't be able to hide that jitter artifact, and it's quite visible on 24/25p. In comparison, Canon cameras do a lot better than Sony, but the trading is less stops of dynamic range. Overall, bigger size of sensor of the same amount of pixels should have less jitter in read-out, like Arri 65 is more steady than 35. By this time, Arri cameras do the best in jitter control on 35mm sensors.
I think a well-known Arri competitor named afer a certain color isn't going to be too happy about this camera. While they were arguably the ones that unlocked digital cinema to be taken seriously by professional filmmakers, they instantly lost the battle for major Hollywood productions on the day the original Arri Alexa with the famous ALEV3 sensor was introduced. After that, they were only really succesful in providing camera's for streaming services such as Netflix that require 4K resolution camera a minimum. While Arri has had the 4K+ 65mm digital camera since 2015, that's so expensive it's not really an option for most streaming service productions. But now Arri offers the 4K LF and mini LF and now also this gorgeous looking S35. Given all the glass available for film makers in this format, this camera is going to see a _lot_ of use.
I'm staring dumbfounded at those waterhouse-looking things. Likely no bounce light on those Aerials, full backlight from the sun. The sky is captured with just the tiny sun dot blowing out AND the shadows on the waterhouses facing camera are ... also captured with nearly no crushed blacks? Am I seeing that correctly??? The 17 stops DR is DEFINITELY on display here. Even the previous Alexas couldn't do that.
Thanks ARRI for creating the perfect camera, that I still can’t afford 🤣🤣 Joke aside hopefully it will make the ARRI Alexa mini slightly more affordable ?
This... is a tricky one! Technically ARRI is a portmanteau of Arnold & Richter, the first two letters of the surnames of the two friends who started the company back in 1917. This would suggest that Ah-Ri would be the correct pronunciation, like in Arnold, however generally we find most people use "Airy". Even within the company in Germany it is split, usually depending on the accent of the speaker. Use what ever feels right in your region!
Because it’s not made to shoot stills. S35 is cinema and 90% of everything you watch and continue to watch is S35. True cinematography doesn’t want full frame and it will never become the norm.
Nice, really better color separation but when I look at movies like The Cell, I can see that analog is still several steps in front when it comes to color. But it's good to know Alexa 35 is now the new DR king.
This all depends on grading though, I'm sure with this new camera and workflow you can make things look more vibrant than the Cell, or the Fall. That doesn't mean I don't want 4k bluray releases of those damn movies though...
@@BrennanMartin No I'm pretty sure it's impossible in all situations (some of course yes). I have retouched hundreds of analog pro photos throughout the 00s and even 14bit film scans. Nothing comes close to this day. Even the humble matrix pill scene shows aesthetics that digital can't surpass.
@@chronokoks I agree. A certain tactile impact of film is never matched except for a few shots where everything falls favourably to create a certain look. Alexa comes the closest relatively but still miles off the feel of true film. But I guess these cameras are essential steps needed to get closer towards a time when digital will surpass film. And seeing how much has been achieved in the last 15 years, I won't be surprised if by 2030 or 2035 we breakthrough.
Raptor looks better with essentially the same dynamic range. Arri just have a marketing department that will claim anything.
