Just realised I will actually be reading all 6 of the Goldsmith's Prize as have already read the Cusk and am currently reading the Bowles and have Mukherjee and Buckley to read, didn't realise that 3 of these were also on the short list
i am curious to see which of the 6 will be your fave...i've only read Lara's and well, you know, one of my fave books of the year....sounds like the Smith book is equally as strong....ttyl
@@bluewordsme2 I can tell you something, it won't be flaming Rachel Cusk. I have all 6 now and hope to read all before winner is announced to give my own verdict
@@MarcNash hahahahah, i sure HOPE Cusk does NOT win...we both agree that at this point, her books are tedious (though i like her early books)....Smith book sounds beautiful...and wont read the other 3 unless you recommend....Spent light, for me, is so brilliant and uncategorizable that it represents the best in shapeshifting form and language.....fingers crossed....and if Cusk wins--im permanently giving up on prizes hahahah
I had similar feelings toward The Interrogative Mood that you did. Fun, enjoyable concept, but was a bit disappointed at the payoff. I think Donald Barthelme's short story Concerning the Bodyguard uses the every sentence as a question technique to vastly greater effect.
The Goldsmiths shortlist looks really interesting this year and I have the Smith, Pawson, Buckley and Bowles to read in the next few weeks. I feel the same about some of the big names - with Krasznahorkai I have only read Satantango and thought it was very good - that was the one that established his reputation, but I haven’t yet tried the ones you mentioned. With Bolano I have read a lot and I have struggled to get much from shorter books, but I thought Savage Detectives was excellent. With Houellebecq I have only read Atomised - what would you recommend as my next one?
agree completely...Satantango is extraordinary as is The Melancholy of Resistance and War & War: i just told marc in an email that K's first 3 were his best (imho)....w/animalinside....and Savage Detectivesis brilliant...if you havent, read his By Night in chile, one of the best and most important books about chile madness and death squads....anyway, im pulling for Lara (spent light), but excited to read Smith since Marc is so enthusiastic.....cheers, bb
The Sitter was the one I mentioned on your Art in Books vid and now having got to it, can highly recommend, although maybe not so much actual art content. The Smith is excellent
as a poet, im so happy to see 3 great books of poetry, i loved that all, though yes Mojave Ghost is towering and also in my top 5 of the year...waiting for you to read Nam Le....i've written ya an email about Kras and Powell and Houel and just ordered the Han Smith...they are a linguistic and im very excited to read, sounds beautiful......well done anyway, well done ...even when/if we have different reactions, i love the thoughtfulness you reflect on books....for sure my fave tube...and i ain saying that just cause we're friends....ok, when is the next vid? hahahahah....check your email, bb

nice to see you cover Padgett Powell! very playful and performative type of writer, really enjoy how far he takes things

Oooo thanks, I'll track down the Bartheleme recommendation

I really liked Houellebecq's "Submission"

Have you picked up Sound Museum by Poupeh Missagi yet?
ordered, but not published (or shipped) in the UK until early december. But it goes straight to the top of my reading when it does arrive
