Excellent project! 👍👍 I would say you are brave, but we all know that, especially after you changed the chain pads with the engine IN the car! 😂😂… I’d do the following… 1) drop current oil and remove filter(look for particles) 2) drop oil sump and see if there is anything visible preventing the engine from rotating 3) remove spark plugs to make it easier to rotate the engine 4) access the oil pump (if possible) and take it apart… Then try rotating the engine… This looks like a 986.2 so it’s a 3 chain design… are cams locked in place? I bet it’s either debris stuck in the camshaft or chain moved so timing is out, and valves are hitting a piston… Good luck with the project! 👍👍
Sounds like the guy that sold that to you wasn’t aware that the valve covers are specifically matched/paired with the head. When he just slapped on a replacement valve cover he created more problems. That is unless he removed the head and had it line bored/matched with the replacement valve cover.
Big can of worms Aaron, you definitely will not run out of projects with this one.🙏👍. I would opt and find a good used motor swap since you already dropped the motor out of it.
Ambitious! I love it. You should confirm the current engine is really toast first. If it is, replacing a 2.5/2.7 with a 3.2/3.4/3.6 might be interesting to watch. My 986 was 3.6 swapped after IMS failure by the previous owner. Makes sense -- it's still a lot of money to get a base engine, only a little more for the bigger ones. I'll be watching. Good luck!
Ever since I discovered your channel I thought this would make for some great content. Theres lots of talk in forums and the Pelican Parts guide to the 996 engine swap but nothing out there in the same informative format of your videos. I've strongly considered documenting the process with my car but A: I don't have a RUclips channel and B: I've opted to repair the 2.7 I've got instead. Truly looking forward to seeing how this new project goes for you!
Great car, exactly same spec and colour as mine! I have only 34k miles on and a new Porsche rebuilt motor was fitted at 19k back in 2009 by previous owner! Dreaded IMS issue I assume. First thing is to drop the sump and have a look after you’ve checked the oil filter for metal flakes - but realistically that engine is gonna have to be pulled apart or swapped out.
Perfect timing. I have a 2000 boxster S with tiptronic thats had bug overheating issue. May have to drop the engine to see if head is cracked, cylinder is scored or gasket blown or all three. May end up doing a complete rebuild.. or swap :)

Had to go out to the garage to make sure you didn't steal mine. That's a lie, when I saw the wheels I knew, I painted mine black. Good luck on the new project!
Seems like it has enough problems that its worth it for you to source a replacement engine and do a full engine swap. That way you could salvage some parts but per the dude. Valve covers are machined to each specific cam so you're going to probably spend a lot of money just getting those. May just be better off sourcing a "clean" engine from a wrecked porsche to do a swap. Excited that there is more 986 content to come. I live in Los Angeles but wish I could help out!
That's a sweet MGB! Also, maybe go in from underneath or through the forward access panel and try and hand-turn the engine to see how far it goes round. That could be interesting.
Aaron enjoy your channel I also have a 986 my question is did you ever get rid of the 2 second rattle upon start up on your orange 986 and if you did what was that I replaced my chain tensioners but still have that two second rattle on a cold start up my generation is in specs so I’m just puzzledI also have replaced my IMS bearing

Glad to see that you have acquired another 986 to work on. I've considered an auto several times but never pulled the trigger. Should be interesting watching you work on this one. You certainly didn't make it easy on yourself 😉
Phase 1…..Remove plugs, put trans in neutral, try to turn over by hand. Then drain oil, cut open and inspect oil filter, then remove the sump pan and see what bits you find.
I suspect from the interview that the timing was not confirmed before the previous owner attempted to start it. BUT, it broke on him for some reason and that is yet to be determined. I agree with dropping and removing valve covers and checking the IMS. Did he give you the failed parts? What can they tell you?
