  • Sunny Lives is a model developed by SEEDS Network for impact-based disaster risk assessment for multiple hazards such as floods, heatwaves, and earthquakes. This artificial intelligence model uses high-resolution satellite imagery and other open-source datasets for analysing hyper-local risk - i.e. at the scale of each building. It has been developed under Microsoft’s global program ‘AI for Humanitarian Action’ over the course of three years. It has been piloted for over 20 locations across India and exhibits high accuracy.
The model gives hyperlocal risk that can be used to generate specific advisories and warnings. When the understanding of the risk improves, people will be able to take more concrete action. Through simplifying data, the gap between communities and technology can be bridged, thus causing a change in attitude. The model has been used to reach out to 58,000 families vulnerable to climate and disaster risks with customised advisories and warnings till date.
Our vision for the model is to use it for climate change adaptation and disaster management in a way that the hyper-local risk of the communities is understood and pathways for their protection and resilience are put into practice.
