  • Now we're in Spring, I wanted to do a quick tire label explanation for those about to buy new tires. A lot of first time tire buyers have no idea what a tire label means, and even some enthusiasts just know their tires, not what the tire label means. I'm hoping this information will help everyone as they shop this season, and as always let me know your questions and thoughts below.

Is it also true that the treadwear rating is relative -within- a manufacturer? Example being a 600 from BFGoodrich is not the same as a 600 from Continental.

Wow. Long time....no videos. Glad you're back.
Can you talk more about the apparently inherent balance problems at 65 mph+ and across most brands of all terrain tires for heavy trucks (3/4 ton up) on 20" wheels? Even you had problems you could not resolve on your ram on the current Conti's. Reading reviews on Tire Rack I see this complaint on most of the tires available. How do we reduce the risk of spending a lot of money and then hating our purchase?

Basically, Rams are the worst. It's just an inherent design flaw because of the tire having a small sidewall relative to the weight of the tire makes them really hard to balance and Rams seem to be the worst of the big 3 manufacturers. That particular size tire is just inherently hard to balance. When you buy a new Ram it comes with Firestones, and those Firestones are a lot lighter. A lighter tire & wheel assembly is easier to balance. What happens is, the replacement tires are usually heavier than the original tires, as drivers usually move to a more aggressive tire. Once you get to that size it just don't balance as well. So really the only way to fix that is to go down to an 18 inch wheel and tire assembly. Otherwise you just gotta live with it like I do!

Uggg. Not a great situation. Are higher quality tires, like micheline, less problem to balance for this situation?

@@jimcollins8097 I worked for discount tire for almost 10 years and have seen it all. And I also drive a ram. Michelins are luck of the draw like most brands. The most consistent brand for rams I’ve seen is Yokohama. I have only had a few that balance bad. And that is the only brand I run on my ram. I have stock size Yokohama winter tires. And for summer 35/12.50/20 g003 mud terrains with no issue.

What does the "Z" on a performance street/track tire rim size mean (i.e. 235/45ZR18 instead of 235/45R18)? Thank you!

You forgot to mention what the 60R in the tire size stands for. For those that don't know, the 60 means that the tire's sidewall is 60% of the tires cross sectional width, and the R is radial.

      It's called the aspect ratio.
