  • Watch the San Francisco Opera / Beyond Innocence Symposium that took place on Friday, May 31st, 12-5:30pm, in the Taube Atrium Theater, the day before the U.S. premiere of Kaija Sariaaho's Innocence. This urgent day-long convening, curated by Pastor Mike McBride, Ryan Marchand, and Elena Park, tackled topics including: full circle advocacy (from grassroots to legislative) to prevent violence in our neighborhoods; community vitality, resilience, and healing; and how trauma may be thoughtfully depicted on stage, screen, and in music, from opera to hip-hop. Presented by SFO, Live Free USA, and Lumahai Productions, the free gathering featured local and national voices such as Pastor Mike, Sheryl Davis (San Francisco Human Rights Commission), and Mike McLively (GIFFORDS); moderators W. Kamau Bell (United Shades of America) and Mina Kim (KQED); and performances by Gunna Goes Global, Chinaka Hodge, and Pacific Edge Voices to-go. BEYOND INNOCENCE events are presented in partnership with Collective Impact, Community Arts Stabilization Trust, GIFFORDS Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, Live Free USA, Lumahai Productions, UCSF San Francisco Wraparound Project, and the William James Association.
