  • Today we've got a great pair from the 60s, a 1964 Fender Stratocaster and a 1963 Vox AC-30 with a factory Top Boost! The guitar is all original, and has to be one of the coolest looking ones we've had in a while. All the wear is authentic and feels fantastic in hand - a full-C mid-60s profile with a nicely worn-in feel. The pickups are clear and full, giving that classic Strat sound that we all know and love. This one comes in its original hard case as well! We have our young friend Nick Mardon in the shop today to do the demo on this guitar through a 1963 Vox AC30 with a factory installed Top Boost. This one also has a nice roadmap of wear on it, while still functioning perfectly, and the replaced 1967 Vox Alnico speakers really brings out the sound of this awesome Strat!

    I had a 1964 Stratocaster. Got it in 1965, and it was essentially, brand new and gorgeous. It was my second-ever guitar, after my first-ever guitar, a 1954 Stratocaster went out the back window of my brother's 1961 Ford station wagon on the Jacksonville, Florida expressway, 25 July 1965. The '64 was perfect in every way, except at the 12th fret on the 6th and 5fth strings ... the worst overtones you can imagine, and nothing I did could change it. Finally sold it when I got married in 1968 and was not so sorry to see it go.

      A lot of those old guitars that had problems have been removed from circulation for decades and only the very best ones have survived, which makes people think all vintage guitars were custom shop level. Your story sheds a pretty big light on that issue. Not going to lie though a huge. Wave of sadness washed over me as I read about your 54 strat going out the window lol

    Man, when you played that thing acoustically, you can just tell that's vintage. It sounds "solid", "set in stone", as if the sound emanating from it is built on a solid foundation instead of sandy soil. Would you please play more vintage guitars acoustically?

      There’s an art to dialing in great tone on a Vox, get it right, and there’s nothing quite like it..... But the vast majority of RUclips videos don’t come any where near the beautiful tones these amps are capable of.

      Yeah, I agree, wrong choice of equipment to play it through. Put it in the hands of Matthew Scott, his set up is killer!

      Vox AC amps are pretty tricky to dial in, and alas, most demos tend to sound scratchy, and tinny. When you get it dialed in right tho, there’s nothing quite like a nice Strat, or Tele thru an AC....beautiful tone - but don’t expect to hear it on RUclips demos, they never seem to bother making the effort to catch the sweet spot.

    • @williamcooper6069

      Yes you could buy a ton of new guitars but you will never be able to replicate that sound.or the history of a 50 year old guitar

      William Cooper
      Only if you actually like/appreciate the sound. It isn't necessarily/objectively better sounding or playing than modern guitars.

    • @williamcooper6069
      @williamcooper6069 4 года назад

      The. Echelon. Your right .I'm definitely not necessarily saying they sound better or easier to play .just ya can't duplicate that sound with the newer.guitars.ive got alot of newer guitars that most are easier to play just cause of the neck profles and all sound awesome .but yeah I really dig the vintage sound and feel I just can't find anywhere else

    • @SSStinger6
      @SSStinger6 4 года назад

      You either see value in the fact that something is inherently vintage or not...there is no rationale justification for the price on the basis of it actually sounding, playing, feeling, better..it just inherently is what it is.

      You could spend a 1/3 of the cost and pick and choose what you want from any era at the fender custom shop, have it reliced, if that's what you're looking for. I'd love to get a 54 EJ Virgina, the production model or the custom shop, as well as the 70th anniversary Broadcaster production or custom shop models. (all 4 would be about 5 grand less than the 64 strat)
