Just caught a 24” fatty bowfin the other day, an even 2 feet! I am pretty sure the males will have a spot mimicking an eye like a redfish would on their tail, and they are also commonly called a mudfish or dogfish. These fish are in most if not all south-eastern United States freshwater, so go check em out for yourself, definitely worth targeting!
They’re actually super strong. I’ve caught them on poles, cast nets and bank lines. One day we had a bank line set to my 130 pound cousins chair and when this Bowfin hit it started dragging him in his chair.
I go fishing for these and they are extremely aggressive they will kill anything in sight and me and some friends are trying to get the state or world record

I caught my first bowfin a few weeks ago, pound for pound the best freshwater fighting fish on rod and reel, alot of fun. Sad some people kill them because they think they're snakeheads. Should do a video explaining the difference.
In Minnesota we call them Dogfish because sometimes they bark when they are gulping for air outside of the water. They are one of the funnest fish to catch, they get large in our cooler waters.

Bowfin are great fish. They also are excellent sport fish for catch-and-release, as they put up a fight almost as fierce as smallmouth bass in some cases, and on par with any largemouth bass. They can also weigh up to 21 pounds. Their meat quite palatable if cooked properly, and is best served fried, smoked, blackened, used in courtbouillion, or in fishballs and fishcakes. Their eggs make excellent caviar as well and serve as a much more sustainable alternative to caviar produced by sturgeon and paddlefish.
I love catching dogfish/bowfin. The fight is incredible, the taste and texture when fried up is so delicious and tender. I need to get my fishing license asap.

Back in the 80s when I was just a kid, my family caught a couple of these in Wisconsin. Will never forget that. We had no idea what it was until my oldest brother found them in a fish book he had. Bowfin aren't supposed to be in our area, but there they were.

This fish looks like the Brazilian "Traíra", they look almost the same but the Traíra has a harder body.
