  • In this episode its time for a guessing game - a new mug guessing game! I’ll drop hints during the sculpting process - see if you can guess the subject before I show the concept sketch! Learn the ins and outs of blocking out sculptures, smoothing clay, and working with Monster Clay. Plus we build a fancy-pants armature that sports a neat feature!
    As always, put your questions in the comments and I’ll do my best to answer them. Please like (and subscribe) if you haven’t already, it means a lot to me - thank you so much for watching!

    Love your approach to technical videos. Just enough to show where the tricky bits will be but without going into too much detail on how those issues were resolved (even though I would watch from beginning to end if you did). Beautiful sculpt!

      @@vantikistudio think of it as 'original condition' :P I've been watching a lot of antiques roadshow lately and a lot of the time sketches, working drawings, mock-ups for sculptures can be worth a lot to collectors if from a celebrated artist. People are interested in the process of things. Unfortunately for artists, they may be long gone before people really celebrate their work

    I recently discovered your channel (and your insta afterwards) and i absolutely love your videos. At first i was confused about the term 'mug'. Who is going to drink coffee out of a dead bastard? Love all the technical reasoning you explain, the steps, the style, the process and the rythm couldnt be better. Often i jump in videos because people are repeating themselves over and over but not in your videos. Everything is straight to the point and interesting. And if you start rambling a 'editing you' jumps in which is funny.
    Hope you keep on making them. There could be more viewers so that it brings something monetary to you.

    Hello! I just wanted to say I've followed you for ages - since way back when you would just do a couple of slab mugs (I think) at a time. You were featured on a website called "The Sneeze" where you made two orange brain fungus tiki mugs for the site's creator - Steve.
    I feel in love with your mugs immediately. I followed you while you made geocache coins, tiles, skull mugs with trepaning holes in their heads, tiki volcanoes, and many others.
    Somehow along the way, I lost track of you! I think I had trouble loading your site on whatever old computer I had and then I thought it was down permanently.
    Whatever the situation was, I thought of you about a month ago, found your channel, and have quickly consumed all of your content.
    I'm so glad to be able to put a face to Vantiki, and am having such fun time learning about your processes. Your channel has been a calm in the storm for me so to speak.
    Anyway, thank you for all that you do, and for sharing these glimpses of your life with us.
    I promise someday I'll buy one of your mugs once the world is "normal" and paychecks are a thing again, but for now I'll support you with likes and views! ♥️

    Got a technical question for you. I'm having issues with my pottery plaster. I know its a 100:70 mixing ratio, so what I've been doing is weighing out the water then multiplying that number by 1.7 to give me the plaster. Is that correct? Then ill let it sit in the water for 2 mins then mix for 3 mins with a drill mixer. But it seems to be coming out super thick. Also how long do you normally wait to demoed the model from the plaster?

    • @vantikistudio
      @vantikistudio  3 года назад +1

      Aloha! I mix my plaster at a different ratio, so my mix times and results may be different than yours. I do a 2 minute slake (soak), but only mix with a drill mixer for 1 minute. Mixing accelerates the setting of the plaster - and the studio is warm right now (summer!) and that heat also speeds things up. I’d try backing off on your mix time. If the mix is still too think after just a minute of mixing, I’d check your ratios of plaster to water. Good luck!!

    I follow your work, I wonder why you do not use a 3D printer

    • @vantikistudio
      @vantikistudio  3 года назад +1

      Thank you for following! Someday I may go the 3D printer route - but there are several hurdles that are currently keeping them out of the studio:
      1- I'd need a high resolution resin printer capable of printing large forms, and they are expensive
      2- I'd need a clean room in the studio for it to live, and our space is small
      3- most importantly, I'd need to become very proficient at 3D sculpting, and my attempts to learn Zbrush have been very frustrating.
      I dream of the day that I can print my molds - but I do enjoy having a clay model in my hands that I can adjust on the fly while sculpting
