I really loved #8 and am currently adding some steps in my process to develop unique adjectives and key phrases associated with my client's brands. I'll turn to the tagline section (I've been skipping this one for whatever reason -- I think based on personal bias about taglines), but see the value in at least having a few key words that help differentiate a brand in the marketplace. There are many metrics to measure the awareness of the brand. You can also interview a segment of customers and get a feel for what they love about the brand.

Do you first define your audience, user persona etc or you first define your positioning statement?
Always start with the audience. Without them you dont know what they want therefore you dont know how to position
