    Free time. I work full time every day. Spontaneity for a disabled person is not a good idea. If I don’t have everything that makes being out of my home safe, I may be returning home via the emergency room.

    I am in the middle of growing a business, which indeed makes me have less free time. But I've found a balance and I can also enjoy some free time for myself.
    I never plan it, being spontaneous makes it more enjoyable. Always!

      Some people don't find it to be that way. Can you list some things you are and are not doing that you think make your retirement more pleasant than others?
      I had a temporary retirement (more like a sabbatical of unanticipated length) at 30, and I slowed down, and I felt more guilty about what I wasn't doing. And I wouldn't get as much done - chores nor fun stuff.
      I'm happiest at unplanned things - yesterday I went to a matinee performance, and my friend brought her kids along. Afterwards we went to the playground, for much longer than expected, and I just lived in the moment.

    Everybody should read a book called "Momo" by Michael Ende, it has a powerful message for the modern world: Time cannot be saved, you either spend it now or you lose it for ever, it cannot be kept in escrow in spite of what all of the energy drink ads tell us.
    My grandma's house was always open, so was ours, so were my aunts' and uncles'. All of that is gone now and I do miss it.

    That's what I got: We don't enjoy our free time when we schedule it. Instead it feels like a chore. So, don't plan anything but have a rough idea of what you want to do.

      @@forisma I love how many fellow ADHDers I find on mostly educational or fitness related content.
      To your question: I'd say DO schedule when and roughly with who but not necessarily on the what. E.g. meeting up with friends and see where it takes you. But I'm just assuming that this is what Selin Malkoc meant. So it's a wild guess.
      But wait. Do you schedule your free time? Whenever I schedule fun activities they feel like a chore, just like the lady said. If I feel like singing, I sing. If I schedule "singing (as for practice), I dread it and won't do it.

    I don't understand the concept of roughly planning. The whole talk about what you shouldn't be doing, and only one sentence about what you should be doing.

    • @charoleawood
      @charoleawood 2 года назад +6

      There's a link to the full video in the description.
      In summary, be honest with yourself about what you enjoy and allow yourself to do those things rather than things you don't enjoy.
      When I was a kid I hated doing homework, it took me a lot longer to do than other kids and I still didn't get good grades. When I got home from school I'd turn on the tv and sit in front of it for the rest of the day until I went to bed. I didn't LIKE Judge Judy and everything else, the endless ads, the unfunny sitcoms, the prime time nonsense, but I watched it all, constantly flipping the channels.
      And then I realized something --- this was a truly unhappy existence! School brought enough dread into my life, if I was going to ignore my homework I might as well ignore it doing things I actually enjoyed rather than be imprisoned to network television. From then on I decided to play videogames, watch movies, read books, and to go outside, it made my life a lot better.
      I was free from the network television schedule and I did things in an unplanned way without feeling that I needed to be doing something else or doing this thing quicker, I wasn't trying to maximize my time, I was simply doing those things which brought me life.

    • @KateLate____
      @KateLate____ 2 года назад +1

      @@charoleawood I've been doing that recently. I've taken on too much, and now I find myself procrastinating doing things I barely like. Then I'm doubly miserable that I didn't get my work done nor did I have any fun. Why do we do this? It's almost like self-punishment!

    • @charoleawood
      @charoleawood 2 года назад +1

      @@KateLate____
      Yeah, it's troubling for sure. Humanity needs to slow down, stop competing, stop playing musical chairs against each other and the planet.
      The things we are told are important simply aren't but we're forced to participate as though they were important. And so we as individuals seek to dull our pain, to momentarily forget, to be numb. This, of course, adds to our ennui.
      Imagine walking and being so upset in life that you don't realize you have a pebble in your shoe causing you discomfort --- it's absolutely ok to stop, take off your shoe, and remove the pebble; it won't solve all of your worries and issues, but removing it will at least mitigate some of the adrenaline and cortisol pumping through your veins.
