Steve Vai is the greatest rock n roll guitarist ever. He's both all of the technical knowledge and music theory in the world. Plus a creative force with a crazy imagination. And unless you can shred and melt faces yourself. Anyone who disagrees is dumb.
I finally got to see Vai live at the G3 Reunion show earlier this year after being a fan since Flexible/Crossroads. I worked for him for a couple of years off and on in the early 2k’s and even though I’d seen him play literally 2 feet from me and restrung every guitar on that wall, the show was everything I’d hoped it would be. Just wish it was longer 😂
Very cool! Yeah, I FINALLY saw him live at the opening of the Inviolate tour in El Cajon, CA last fall. Had also been a fan since Flexible/Crossroads- still have my Flexible cassette I got at Tower Records in the mid 80s. It. Was. Awesome... Sadly, I missed out on G3 as the affordable seats sold out quickly! I got to see Joe Satriani on the Surfing With The Alien tour at the California Theater in San Diego on June 11, 1988.
This is excellent again Jimmy. Great in-depth video. The Audience is Listening was my very first introduction to Vai. Been a fan ever since. Finally saw Vai live in 2005 with Tony McAlpine and Billy Sheehan. Such great performers and awesome show. Always such an innovator and always inspiring. I love this video my friend, getting me all pumped and inspired all over again. Keep them coming Jimmy, you rock brother 🫵🤩🤘 cool to see Devin Townsend make a couple of appearances in this video too. Another musical genius.
Thank you brother - it's awesome that you got to see him during that time. And especially with that line up! Steve and Billy are one hell of a duo and of course Tony has chops galore. It was cool that Devin was able to get stuff worked out with Steve. I don't know if I would take it as such a champ if somebody pooped in my guitar case lol. Props to Steve for that as well. Always great to hear from you Ed 🤘🤘
LOL I definitely wouldn’t have responded the same way either about that poopy surprise. But I guess that just shows what a gentleman Steve is. And yeah Devin is just so over the top hahah, I loved him in SYL and DTP. His vocals are just insane and his song composition of another level. Btw something tells me (and i hope) that we will also get to see Satch video like this. I see i have missed such a ton of great videos that you have made so far, and that imstill should check out. You are a machine Jimmy, awesome job man!!
This was almost as good as The First 30 Years. Very well done and there was actually a few things I didn't know, which is saying something 🤣. Steve and EVH are the tippy top for me and this video did not disappoint!
That truly is a huge compliment - thank you for that! EVH was in the class all his own, I thought I could get him in one video and realized really quickly I was going to have to break that up into a series. It was just so much ground to cover. Steve and Eddie both really had such an impact on guitar in their own unique ways. Thank you again so much - I really do appreciate it! 🙏
@@guitarmeetsscience yeah I could easily see that. You're very welcome, you can tell you put alot of work and care into this. I can't wait to check out some more videos. Like your EVH videos perhaps!
Thank you kindly! It is really fascinating to try to get behind what makes these artists tick. I'm glad you enjoyed it and I really appreciate the kind words!
As usual, with anyone who attended Berklee in Boston, they have better opportunities and never graduate!😂😂😂 Passion and Warfare is my favorite album of his.
Only seen him once. DLR Skyscraper tour. Right up front, truly incredible! Specially when Steve brought out the heart shaped guitar and started playing with both hands!
@@guitarmeetsscience that band was so unbelievably tight and right on. Dave flying over head on a surf board! Come on, Billy Sheehan, Greg Bissonette and Steve? UNREAL. Great stage show too. Man, those were... good times
Oh yeah - Dave was going for broke during those years. I really like the way he stepped everything up. It's a shame it fizzled out so soon though. That was a great lineup!
@@guitarmeetsscience it really was one of the better tighter bands I've ever seen. And look at those players. How could it not be??! Dave went oh yeah fk you, I'll get everyone better than you! And he did. But Dave alas, was still to be Dave

Right on! It's a great little track on that album. Especially the unexpected trumpet parts - I don't know where he came up with that but it's pretty awesome 🤘🤣🤘
Steve is an enigma. Much like Edward Van Halen He has his own tone, style and stage presentation. I've always been into his work and playing because of it's uniqueness. Maybe he really is an alien?😁
Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Peter Green, Ritchie Blackmore, Angus Young...Eddie Van Halen I could go on but the idea is a cross section...all had an incredible sense of melody as well as technical proficiency...Steve Vai always had the technical proficiency. I never hear the sense of melody with Vai though same with Satriani so both are pretty boring after a little bit of listening
Awesome! My favorite Steve Vai song is FRANK from the 1999 album "The Ultra Zone." It's F'ing beautiful! I have a Bad Horsie II and a Little Alligator. I don't think that Morley makes them anymore.
Great song choice man! His chord work on that is incredible... Highly inspired piece right there. Damn that's pretty cool - and you're right I don't believe either of those pedals are out nowadays. Collector's items all the way. Back in the day I used to have a Morely diamond distortion. That thing was SRV in a box. Sadly it got stolen at some gig. Also out of print sadly.

Steve Vai is a solid musician through and through. Also one hell of a showman as well
@@guitarmeetsscience there are so many phenomenal guitar players. But Vai checks all the boxes.
He’s my hero for guitar and for mental attitude.
Exactly - and mental attitude for sure. Vai has been through a lot, and really makes it work.

Either Berkeley or Harvard - for some reason it seems a prerequisite to great success is dropping out at some time or another lol

Another great video. A guitarists that would be next up on the list would be Derek Trucks.
Thank you so much - Derek plays a mean slide!

I agree, I could have seen him for free recently but didn't go. I'd be bored in 10 minutes, saw the Weight Band instead lol, they were great.
It's about time someone mentioned the great Ritchie Blackmore, I think their ordered too because Ritchie doesn't play the game
26:35 wow I find the shitting in the guitar case story an impressive testament to how nice Steve is.
Hahaha man to be honest I don't know if I would have taken it quite the way Steve did lol. Must have been quite the find 🤣
I am 5 days older I play guitar but not in Steve's league
His wife is THAT happy! 🤫
🤣
Sex and Religioun is an awesome album.
