Just seen the question about the Irish records - many were destroyed in a fire in 1922.

Yep, a lot of records were destroyed in the Irish Civil War (1921-1923), many during the fighting between the Irish Free State army and the anti- treaty IRA and the shelling of the Four Courts in Dublin in 1922.

1:30:09 Yes, Straßburg (Strasbourg) was German before. It is the largest city in the region of Alsace that was part of Germany. The arquitecture of the houses resembles the ones of the Black Forest in Germany. They also developed an unique gastronomy that you're not going to find anywhere else in France.

Strasbourg became French in 1681, under Louis XIV.

Regarding photos, I have nothing further back than my grandparents (and I knew them all personally).
I don't know if there were ever any photos taken of my ggp's. They were all poor and wouldn't take photos just for the fun of it, and I don't know how common were photos IDs back then, I don't think they were mandatory, so they would skip that. Anyway, if there any photos of my ggp and further back, they were either lost or at best some relative I have no contact with has them.

On the other hand, I did gen. research for a friend (upper-middle class) and we found a lot of photos in his family's estate, including glass negatives. The problem is most of those photos have no indication of who's in them; we were able to recognise a few of them, and connect the dots to a few more with a high confidence, but not many. Also, due to second marriages and a few odd lines of inheritance, there are a bunch of photos we know have zero blood relation with him, and it may be that many of the unidentified photos come from that family and not from his actual family... It's a pity, because some of the photos are great.
