Tom Payne (The Walking Dead, Prodigal Son) joins us this week to share his journey in becoming an actor along with the unique pride and sacrifices he’s made to fully invest in his career coming over to America.
Tom shares difficult lessons he’s had to learn about managing expectations, after certain projects that he believed were shoe-ins didn’t live up in the eyes of fans or people in the industry.
We also talk about his nerves while joining the biggest show at the time in The Walking Dead, the differences in traffic violations in the UK and US, and how unfortunately we often don’t make changes until we hit rock bottom.

Prodigal Son... loved that show so much!
I miss that show
Awesome show!
that show was taken from us way too early
Agreed!
I was really hoping a streaming network would pick that show up after fox cancelled it
I was Tom's stand in on The Walking Dead! He's a really good, genuine guy. He deserves all the success.
Wow! That had to be an experience.
I met Tom Payne twice at a convention, in New Orleans. The first time we met, he was shocked that I knew who he was, before he was on The Walking Dead. The second time we met, he was engaged to his wife, and I congratulated him. He's just a very sweet man all around.
Loved Tom as Jesus in TWD, wish his character got more screen time. I reckon he could've done well with his on TWD show, like Daryl, The Ones Who Live etc. Loved this one! Much love from the UK 🇬🇧✌️🩵
I assume TWD= The walking dead? Sorry I'm what the youngings call a boomer
PS had the most epic pilot ep and it just got better and better after that. It broke my heart that they cancelled it, the campaign we did to save this show has a special place in my heart forever even tho we weren't successful 😭
What a cool lad. 👍🏼
Miss him on Prodigal Son.
Man I just miss Prodigal Son! That’s how I was introduced to Tom and I’m so thankful for it. I watched live every week and live tweeted with the cast. I even made a couple friends from it as well. If I could fan fund a third season I would in a heart beat cause the way season two ended just demands a third season… but that’s show biz I guess 😒 at least we got the amazing two seasons we did
Loved Tom Payne in "Prodigal Son" as Malcolm Bright/Whitly, his Serial Killer Dad on screen Michael Sheen as Martin Whitly as well, both were and are phenomenal, Tom as Jesus in TWD too of course, Tom is beautiful and talented, and deserves so much screen time (Keiko Agena ) as Dr. Edrisa Tanaka who I also loved in her role on "Prodigal Son" as well as Rory's best friend in "Gilmore Girls" would absolutely agree...She Loved Malcolm. It's a crying shame "Prodigal Son" was cancelled after only 3 Seasons. The people that watched it loved it, the problem was that not enough watched it unfortunately. It's streaming on MAX, and is worth the watch, it is filled with alot of known and new talent, even Lou Diamond Phillips and Catherine Zeta Jones to name a couple more to watch.
Michael Rosenbaum doesn't know what a cajun accent is...😮
I can see Tom Payne passing as a Cajun; he kind of reminds me of one of my Cajun Cousins now that I think about it...Nice Cajun Accent Tom...I'm Cajun on my Mom's side, and Texan on my Dad's side.
I do and am looking forward to seeing anything Tom Payne is in...❤️🔥
I met Tom at a horror convention. He was super chill. He didn’t have anyone at his booth and Ross Marquand next to him had a ton so I talked with him for like 10 minutes. At a point my leg was starting to hurt because I’d been standing for 3 hours and he saw that and he said “There’s a chair right there” and pointed to the security chair next to him. I was like “You sure no one will care?” and he was like “No one’s here right now” so I sat in it. Security guy saw it and instantly walked up and Tom said “Well it was worth a shot” 🤣
Sadly enough I've worked with both. Tom is an extremely friendly and kind human being. Ross on the other hand is a total jerk, yelling at people he sees as lower in status than him and thinking he's more of a celebrity than yes really is.
@@FunWithAJ Seriously? He seems like a pretty decent guy.
@@JackFlicks yup dead serious.
@@FunWithAJ huh that’s odd, he was super chill when I met him. I’m sure it was a super bad day. I take any celebrity being a dick with a grain of salt because idk what’s going on with them
@drumaticpageofmusic4148 for sure everyone has bad days not just actors. That said I wasn't interacting with him in a fan capacity. That may have been the factor. I was interacting with him as a fellow actor just in a lesser speaker role.
I love Tom Payne! I started working in the film industry after his run in TWD and every time I see a project with him in it come up I invest more interest than others because he's such a great guy and actor. I loved Jesus and was hugely disappointed they didn't give his character a proper arc like in the graphic novel. I really wish Tom all the best and can't wait to see what else he does! I'm so happy to see him on this show! Great interview!
Same here!
When he was on The Walking Dead he was MY favorite character on the show. *SPOILER ALERT* .... I was devasted when he was killed off. He played Jesus the best way possible and very similar to the comic book version. I just wanted him to stay on because he was just that good of an actor and character.
I love the show Prodigal son was so good and I was sad when it got cancelled
I loved him on Prodigal Son, I'm really excited to see Imaginary
Loved Parodical Son. Tell him it ended too soon.
Loved tom in the walking dead, awesome character and amazing performance!
Literally Prodigal Son was my favorite show at the time. It was soooo good. 🥲
Love Prodigal Son! I miss that show so much and really wish some network or studio could find a way to bring back Prodigal Son. Also Tom Payne is such a great actor I was so excited seeing you had him on your podcast as a guest. I loved him on Prodigal Son, The Walking Dead, The Physician, MindGamers, and Luck.
This was a fantastic interview with a delightful young man, thanks for having Tom on the podcast I will definitely be checking out his work🤩
ALMOST 300K MICHAEL!! EARLY, WELL DESERVED CONGRATS TO YOU!!!!!!!!
This is so awesome to listen. We do miss you in Walking Dead. Also, in Prodigal Son.
So good as Jesus! I missed his character so much by the end. A legend.
What a great human! So humble and real! 😊
In hit movies & shows w/ top actors, all giving you a stellar resume...industry doesn't care.
The industry is fascinating.
I just finished listening to this episode and I learned so much about him. He is definitely down to Earth. I am looking forward to watching Horizon. Best podcast ever!!
31:22 _Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day_ is where I recognize Tom from! That movie is so damn rewatchable and maintains a fanbase to this day because of Amy Adams, Frances McDormand, Lee Pace, Mark Strong (and so on) fans being so devoted! It's just delightful and the love story between the two older people (Frances and Ciaran Hinds) is so sweet.
Love that movie too.
Love Tom Payne big fan of the walking dead ♥️ Tom was awesome on the walking dead. Love Jesus he is one of my favorites on the show. I bumped into Tom at FanX in 2018, he was walking around the con. I was so embarrassed he said hi to me and I froze he was so sweet to me. Thank you Michael for bring Tom onto the podcast, another episode that Rock!!
I love Tom great actor great person lovely conversation.
Really enjoyed this. He played a great.chaacter on TWD. Very entertaining conversation that held my attn for its entirety. Thanks, Michael@
Rosie, I just love all your interviews. Thanks for this.
Rosenbaum, you get the best guests on your podcast. Well done Lex, well done.
Another great episode! And now I can't wait for the John Rhys-Davies episode to come out!!
Such a great interview. I've loved seeing Tom in movies and in Walking Dead. I will have to go watch Miss Pettigrew again and see him.
This was fantastic! Great guy!
Love this interview way to go Rosie 🎉
Met Tom at a convention years ago. Great guy. Down to earth. Enjoyed the interview!
Awesome episode!!!!!! Totally felt Tom could talk forever.
Thanks to Rosey, Ryan and Tom! 🎙
mad love for supreme podcasts!!
\m/
Tom Payne is very pleasant to listen to and i particularly like the discussion around your family and actors experiences, it’s each time what captivates me in Inside ♥️ I haven’t seen The Walking Dead but i know it’s a great series ! ♥️ I think Horizon will be great ! Michael, Ryan 💙💖👍
Yes! Get Josh on the show! Love him! Eugene and Jesus were my favorite characters on TWD.
Tom was a great guest! I love that Prodigal Son got a mention, grateful that question was answered 🙂 it’s so missed! 💔
My Favorite part of Tuesday 💙 Awesome episode as Always 🤘
I miss Prodigal Son!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
love this podcast
Wow a lot my friends love walking dead every summer holiday we like to watching 😅I don't know why in summer British weather 😀 thank you for another brilliant interview x
It's so good to hear two people talking about life. It's incredible. I hope to see you in films soon.
Some people in the chat are saying the tv show Prodigal Son was amazing. I'm here to comment about that. They're absolutely correct. For that show being the same premise redone for the 50th time, they really had all the parts in place for it to be the best.
You get the coolest guests Michael.
Senoia, GA shout out in this episode- nice! Nic and Norman’s is a great place to eat.
I had no idea you play the flash in justice league! That is the coolest! He was my favourite character
26:35 Aussie born here. We have plenty of room, come on down haha
Oh wow, did not expect Tom Payne to pop up on this show. Tom is a good actor and nice guy. But he is still doing well, and I wish him more great roles! ❤
I'm watching the episode now Tom Payne he's a really interesting character as always the best podcast ever you're amazing Michael love u 💖
Listened to this earlier and loved it!! Going to watch the video now. Thank you Michael ❤ Happy Tuesday 💙
I loved what Tom said about his chat with his wife about having children in America. Zero help and expensive as all get out.
I remember him from Skins then The Walking Dead
Cajun is actually Acadian (Canadians) who moved there after being kicked off their land by the English in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Many of them moved back to Canada eventually, but plenty of their descendants, and culture stayed in New Orleans area and evolved.
I love that every tuesday when i tune in. i usually know the person by name. if not I tune in and im like like..OHHHHH...I know that guy!! lol. whether I know them or not it is always a good convo.
27:29 😭 so beautiful Tom 🇺🇸
25:10 It's like a magic trick.
In Australia we also have red light and speed cameras
Yessss!
Yes! Happy to see this guest!
"No one's Australian we sent them all there" 😂😂 What a guy
Looking forward to learning more about him.
Jesus was a dope character. I like the martial arts fighting he does in it.
You should do one about dark sector and how you got casted for Hayden teno
Does anyone else see a similarity between Tom Payne and Adrian Grenier? Or is it just me. Great interview.
Fabulous human.
I remember waking dead
In skins UK
Speed cameras here in Georgia in the school zone
Watching smallville and lex got me in tears
I used to call myself Tom Payne when playing Max Payne on the PS2 back in the day. 🤣
We care!!
I think he would make a good Vulcan get a part on Strange New Worlds
Thank you for having "Jesus" on your show! I was pissed when they killed him on TWD.
I bawled like a baby! That was so shocking.
28:40 I don't like that this Brit knows more about my country than I do.
Michael do you respond to fans?
I was big fan of Tom's show Prodigal Son and was very sorry it only had 2 seasons. I would have steered him away from that recent movie, Imaginary. I haven't seen it but I hate the director.
I care! What’s the band name?
Red light cameras got taken away because they were causing more accidents. Usually from people slamming their brakes and getting rear ended.
You should see if you can do a voice on Warframe since you did dark sector we need Hayden teno 😊
No Tom, speed and red light cameras still exist in other U.S. cities. Lol!
He would be a good Gambit in the MCU.
I'd cast him as The Silver Surfer personally.
TOM WHY ARE YOU A CITIZEN OVER THERE....COME HOME!!!!
When is Michael gonna be a guest on the podcast have ryan or jason interview him or maybe Michael interviews himself
I pray to god there are Tom Payne fans from the UK who recognise this guy as Brett Aspinall from Waterloo Road
I was an extra on TWD, Jesus shot me in the head!
Sweet Jesus!!
I do not remember him in The Walking Dead and I’ve seen them all and I’m a big-time fan don’t remember him not one bit
INDYS DAD IS JAMES BOND MAN!!!
I really like Tom on TWD and was bummed that he was no longer on the show. That was pretty much the start of the show going downhill. Also, that sweatshirt is amazing, Payton is the GOAT!
🤗 👍👍
It took me WAY too long to figure out he was Jesus. I kept being like...wow those eyes are great. Then I was like wait...
Can someone explain Ryan to me? Why is he even there? It looks like he needs to be supervised.
As a proud American who has traveled Europe and other continents, nothing comes close to America. Everyone obsesses over America. Countries like Taiwan love us and view us as a beacon of freedom. In reality we could have taken over Europe after ww2. I love that Tom recognizes the difference of states. But it’s important to distinguish between legal and illegal immigration. Republicans are more pro immigration than democrats. Democrats just want the souther border open.
Get a grip mate.
23:20
He was miss cast in The walking dead, Jesus in the comic is a Ninja and built like a tank
You haven’t seen his shoulders. He’s built like a tank and has the ninja moves. He was under-utilized on TWD.
Seems like a cool guy. Really looking forward to this. Thank you 😊❤️🙏.
What a coincidence that my family and I are on season 9 of twd and we all love Jesus.
One of the best deaths in TWD. That whole episode was great, I think it was around the time George Romero died.?
