Backpacking Colorado's Four Pass Loop

- Footage from my fall trip through the epic Maroon Bells and Snowmass Wilderness. Colorado's Four Pass Loop is perhaps one of the most famous backpacking trips in Colorado. The views are astounding, the mountains uniquely colored and shaped, and the hiking strenuous. The trail passes over four high passes as it loops 27 miles through some of the most beautiful terrain Colorado has to offer.

Another fabulously beautiful hike and video. Because of you and others like you, I have decided to get back into backpacking. I've spent the last few months buying new gear, and working out. I will be turning 60 this summer and hope to do so above 8,000 ft. I managed a fair amount of backpacking when I was younger but life got in the way somewhere along the line. It's time to see some more wild places. Thank you for the inspiration!
Awesome, this makes me so happy to hear! Get out there and have fun!
Super Awesome! Thank you for taking all of us along!
Wow, what a beautiful hike! I can never get enough of the Rocky Mountains!
Great as always. Simply astounding sunsets! Great hike! Thanks for this.
Nice video of a very demanding hike. Kudos to you both. Thanks for inserting the map and trail segments. That really helps to track what the video is showing us. Great seeing the view from Trail Rider Pass. I summitted from the south as day hike back in 2009 to look down on Snowmass Lake. Fond memories of the beauty of Colorado.
Awesome, Thanks for taking us along and showing us those Majestic views.
Amazing video! I loved the wildflowers. Thanks for sharing.
Happy to see another video from you Apache. Nice footage. I didn't know of this loop hike, thanks for posting.
We really enjoyed your video.. It so enjoyable to go hike with folks that aren’t talking a mile a minute.
A beautiful video.
Great Video. Awesome job filming, I felt I knew right where I was on the trail. That sunset inspired me to camp in CO
I have always enjoyed your videos Joe awesome scenery I miss your commentary though it looks like you found somebody to hike with awesome thanks
Mountain goats in colorado are a rare sight from what i understood...exceptional video...memories that will last you a lifetime im sure.
Awesome video man! Thanks for posting.

Awesome hike, man! Words. Not. Necessary.

Wow! beautiful! great shots 👏👍
Wow, what a stunning view!
That sunset is breathtaking
really great trail. the views are wonderful.
Beautiful video! I may be moving to CO soon, so I'm scoping out BP trips there. I was feeling sad leaving maybe leaving CA & Sierra Nevada, but now I'm excited!
Wow, I am watching this again... and again...
Taz Mahal really though lol
Beautiful scenery!
Absolutely breathtaking
Can’t wait to do this trial. Been awhile since I’ve actually done backpacking but I was in this area for an outward bound course and it was simply stunning
Thanks Joe. Great video.
8:52 omg I love those sunsets
Love this video!!! Put it down on my to do list.
Very good stuff man, makes me want to finally go do this route! Perhaps in the off-season to help enjoy the views the most.
Hi, Joe. I´m from Brazil and I´m 63 years old. And also a big fan of your videos. I´ve been following you since the AT ,PCT and CDT series. Think they are highly inspirational. Because of your videos I felt like doing something different in my life. So, since last year, I´ve been pedaling my bike around my country in the "bikepacking stile", after 50 years without even seating on a bicycle. For that, your tips about what gear to carry in the ultralight way were fundamental. Obviously adapted to the bike needs. Thank you so much for being so inspiring and for give me a chance of changing my life. Congrats from Brazil and excuse me for my poor English. Cheers...!!!
Your English is great and thanks so much! I can't think of something better to hear. It sounds like you are on an amazing adventure! I'd love to bikepack around one day.
Hi, Joe, thanks for answer me back. Ok, I agree, but are small adventures. From 100 to 150 miles of pedaling, mostly in week ends, twice in a month. Normally spendind the nights in small cottages or inns along the way. By now, I am not in the mood for camping. But having a lot of fun at low cost. I am having a blast, no doubt. I think there´s a lot in common between ultralight backpacking and the conception of bikepacking.By the way, I´ve seen here in Brazil lots of people who left the usual backpacking to bikepacking. Just a matter of choise, I think. No comparison. Well, thanks one more time and keep delighting us with your videos and adventures. Cheers !!
Awesome video really enjoyed it.
Thanks Joe. Ive watched all your Big Three hikes. They are super great but they miss some of this fantastic scenery you reveal on these shorter loop trails. Thats good to know for those who just cant take off six months for a hike. Your movie making gets better and better. Wow!
Thank you!
Hey Joe, tell us about the tent. Thats new for you. I kind of inferred from the video you probably set that up for your beautiful lady friend. If you are in a relationship, congrats! So, is the shelter ultra light like your tarp etc??
Haha, she's just a friend. The tent is hers and it's a Big Agnes Fly Creek UL2. Not a ultralight per se, but only about 2 lbs 5 oz. Great for splitting between two people.
Reminds me of why I love the state.
Excellent. Thanks! I needed that! ❤
Beautiful
Nice to see a new hiking video on your channel! Might want to look into the somewhat distracting magenta color cast in some of your shots. Happy trails!
What a spectacular area. Really like the way nature is taking back the mountains, the trees that grow in lines on the sides of mountains as they seek places to plant their roots is amazing. When did you do this because there is no way it was in January as Colorado is under 6 feet of snow then
Great video...long time in coming. Would love to have a bit of commentary about the areas you hiked and the names of the peaks, mountains, lakes, etc...So, when's your next video being posted?
Good video. Near Maroon Bells, Aspen. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks!
Just absolutely insane. I miss hearing your narration, but in this case the imagery speaks for itself. Go to finally see another one of your adventures. I am doing a long weekend in Shenendoah later this spring and the the Oregon section for the PCT from Ashalnd to BotG's in August. Keep blowing our minds!
Nice, have fun out there!
Any recommendations for good pants in cooler weather?
Maybe a video on cold weather backpacking?
Some inspiration! I have the same backpack but have been telling myself I wouldn’t have enough space
Wow - Awesome!
Great to see you on trail, you should take a look at Colorado trail in 2017
I'd love to haha.
Hi, really cool alpine scenery with nice views and some cute animals. I like your style of hiking ;-)
ATB. Franz, bugikraxn.
Sunset at 8:53 is incredible.
The colors are astounding in 9:02. The shot in 13:53 is majestic.
Very nice: )
I enjoy your thru hike and gear reviews videos. I even have used some of your advice. I noticed your friend was shooting photos as well and was wondering if she posts her photos and videos on youtube. If so are the available to view?
You can check out her blog here: treelinesblog.com
Hi! Great video. Thank you for posting. A couple of questions, would you recommend this hike for beginners? How long did the hike take?
Thumbs up just for that beat.
Joe, I love the video but then I love all your videos. Beautiful shots and very informative. Your videos were very helpful for preparing for the JMT last year.
We are planning on a week in RMNP this July and would love to hit this on the way in or out. I Have a couple questions. Are there permits required? Where would you recommend camping around the half way point if you were going to hike it in two days?
Hey Steve, Thanks! Permits are required to be in the backcountry here, but you can get them at the front gate to the park. Side note: bear canisters are required too. I've heard there's a place in town that rents them. Be aware that this loop is quite popular now and I'm not sure if theres a limit to the number of people they allow out there, might wanna check on that. I would recommend either camping next to Snowmass Lake (going counterclockwise on the loop) or just underneath (about 400' below) Trail Rider Pass (going clockwise) where there is a nice little lake with incredible views, like the alpenglow you saw in the video.
What is the best time to do this trail ? Wow its beautiful
What time of year were you hiking
Great vid! What type of tent did you guys use?
Soooooo... I'm planning on doing this. I'm from Texas, and am 19. My main questions are, what time of year was this? Are the trails well marked? And what's your favorite moment from the trip? And what's another good trail?
Hey Joe. Some friends and I are wanting to attempt this hike during our Spring break from school and we could use some advice, as this will be our first Colorado hiking experience. More specifically, do you think the conditions will be suitable for an enjoyable hike during early April, which is when our break starts? Any other tips would be appreciated. Thanks for the awesome video!!
Incredible! Love the camp above tree line with sunset shots! Did ya do any Tenkara fishing in those lakes??? :)
No, I wish... Not enough time this trip unfortunately.
Really awesome video with a lot of great kamera work !
But I would really enjoy it if you could speak to the kamera or make a mix between that and some more music :)
Happy hiking
amazing now on my list to backpack. would like to see some commentary but was still awesome video
Freaking awesome ! Now on my to do list ! Who was using the q-core pad ? Love mine. What time of the year was this at ? Peace my friend .
That was my friend's pad. I hear that they're super comfy! This was in late August of 2016.
AWESOME VIDEOS & PICS AS ALWAYS! ENJOYED! DID YOU GET A CHANCE TO GET SOME FISHING DONE TOO! OR JUST NOT ENOUGH TIME TO. CAN'T WAIT TO GET A SMART TV SO I CAN CONNECT MY PHONE TO IT ! IT'S AWESOME ON THE PHONE & TAB .CAN'T IMAGINE WHAT IT WOULD LOOK LIKE ON IT. THANK YOU AGAIN! BE SAFE! HAVE FUN! SMILE! GOD BLESS YOU ALL ALWAYS!
Thanks! Yeah, didn't bring the rod along on this trip, just not enough time.
THANK YOU FOR GETTING BACK TO ME!
Love the video. Beautiful and well done.
What were temperatures like when you went? Highs and lows?
Pretty mild, perfect hiking weather. Can't quite remember but it was probably 35 - 70 F
Awesome video Joe. How crowded did you find the trail? Considering heading out there summer 2018 but have heard it's quite popular. Once you hike in a ways, does it quiet down a bit?
It was and is very popular, but I would still highly recommend it. Once you get over the first pass or two, the crowds really thin out.
May I ask how many nights have you stayed on the trails?
Amazing shots Joe. What are you filming with these days? Any new additions to your gear for this trip?
Thanks! This was filmed on a Sony a6300 I've been experimenting with thanks to my Patreon patrons. My gear was basically the same, but I think I may do a gear breakdown alongside my trail write up when I release it on my website.
I always love seeing a pika.
yeeeep! yeeeeep!
Badassery at its finest! How many days was that trip Joe?
Thanks! The trip was technically 3 days, but the first day only consisted of hiking in a few miles and setting up camp. It can be done in 2 days, or even 1 if you want to move really fast.
Tent? Was is lighter since you were splitting with a trail partner? Just curious since you are often solo.
Beautiful hike!
Haha yeah, just split it with a friend to save weight. Still using my tarp though.
Look at Joe getting all domesticated. Even went and got himself a tent. Seriously ....very well done.
Joe,
How long did it take you to do the loop and what was your overnight site(s)? Great Hike.
It took 2 days technically, though you could say 3, as we hiked in a few miles the first night. The first night I slept a little north of Crater lake, and the second night just south of Trail rider pass at a beautiful high elevation lake.
Is that capital peak at 5:38?
I just now realized that four passes is the optimum number of passes in a 27 mile loop...I had to watch this twice to come to that realization.
Amazing place! Great video Joe! Do you ever have altitude sickness? Im from ga and felt very bad during a trip there last summer
I haven't had altitude sickness yet, but I've always had time to adapt. Coming from near sea level and immediately being thrown into high elevation is much more likely to trigger it from what I understand.
Just have a cigarette once a day while your up there, helps with the altitude sickness if you do experience it.
Fantastic video and hike. Is a backcountry permit needed for this?
It is, but they are available at the park. They may sell out in the peak seasons, not sure about that though. A bear canister is required too.
Nice trip Joe. What month was that? The temps looked mild.
It was late August. Thanks!
Hi Joe! Are you one of those lucky people that get used to high altitude quickly or do you do something to help you adjust?
I live at about 5280' elevation, so I get a head start over most people. The best option is to just ease into it. A lot of people come out to Colorado from sea level and immediately climb a 14,000 foot mountain, which I wouldn't recommend. That's when the altitude can hit you hard. It doesn't always effect you, but if you jump head-first into a high elevation hike after living at sea level, your giving the altitude a bigger/better chance of impacting you, potentially in the form of altitude sickness. Generally, most people handle it ok though.
Hey Joe...
Do you mind sharing what camera and editing software you use? Like the new map graphics. Thanks!
This was shot on a Sony a6300 and edited on Final Cut Pro. And thanks!
I thinking about going the 2nd week of August. When did you do this trip? What time of the year would you recommend?
Also, what location did you camp at the 2nd night? I want to camp in that spot. LOL!!!!
When did you do this hike??
Beauty!...can you camp anywhwere?
Pretty much. There are a few high use areas that they ask you to camp in designated sites at though (around lakes.)
I'm going there next month. Just curious is a bear can needed?
It is required.
how often did you have to climb steep parts of the mountains?
About half the time.
Hey Joe, is it doable in late October?
Well, it will definitely be snowy and have very low temps. I believe it's doable, but it'll be more of a winter camping situation.
👍👍
Joe, I see you have a cute hiking partner now, is this the reason it took longer to post a new video? If it is, I truly understand.
Thanks for taking us along, on such a beautiful hike.
Haha, nope, just a friend. It's just been hard to balance working and getting outside and actually making videos. Hopefully that is changing now though. Gotta make time!
What map did you use in this video, and what time of year was this?
This was 2016, and the map is a latitude 40 map of the area: amzn.to/2oL65oy
I used the Latitude 40 Snowmass/Aspen map and this was late August.
What did you shoot this with? And what time of year did you go?
This was in late August 2016. And it was shot on a Sony a6300 camera.
Did you shoot in slog and color grade in post or is this video straight from the camera??? I recently bought an A6300 and haven't had a chance to play with it yet.
A view months ago, I started planning a four month thru hike in Finland and I love watching your videos because they're so inspiring! However, I'm already really impatient and I'm counting the days until I can finally start and your videos clearly don't help the situation ;)
Haha, It's a good thing. I'd love to see footage of your hike in Finland!
I'm actually thinking about taking a camera with me, but I'm not so sure which one. Do you have any recommendations?
Well, the cheapest and simplest option is to film with a smart phone camera. Not the best quality available, but still pretty impressive and you can even edit on it. Otherwise, I don't have any great recommendations, though I know there are some articles out there on trail cameras.
Okay, thanks a lot :)
Awesome video. Something to take my mind off politics right now.
See any bears this trip?
Nope, though bear canisters are required on this loop.
hay joe I was sitting on the couch today not much of a football fan anyway I've got a great idea something to add to your list of done items.... AZ TRAIL what an idea hay spring is on the way .... your welcome.... Jim Golden Valley AZ
I would love to do the AZ trail... one day!
What time of year is this
Late August.
Some commentary telling us what we are looking at was missed. Beautiful country though.
What time of year was this footage taken?
Late August.
Thanks.
Which month did you hike?
This was late August.
No narration? ....so you no longer use your tarp, I see you have Big Agnes tent now.
Haha, not this time unfortunately. I was doing this trip with a friend and it made sense to share a tent to save weight. Still using my tarp though.
i wish they had a east coast to west coast trail...
Steven Wood Check out the ADT. American discovery trail. Goes from Point Reyes, California to Cape Henlopen, Delaware.
Sea to Sea Route.. Andrew Skurka did it
Not a complete coast to coast, but the PNT is supposed to be legendary
I have seen the PNT on RUclips.
How does it compare to the Winds?
Haha. Well... It's beautiful, but the Winds have a special place in my heart.... and less people too. The mountains are beautiful and the vistas scenic, but the Winds are just next level gorgeous to me.
