      The patches are a lot more expensive, as well. For example my dose for injections cost me around 70 bucks for like 3 months while patches are like a few hundred per month.

    I suggest for hormone patches, that you keep it on for two days, and every day, apply a new patch, that way you absorb all the testosterone from the patch. I know estrogen patches work like that.

    • @missmalpractice
      @missmalpractice 6 лет назад +50

      Sam Collins i suggest not doing that only because estradiol doesn’t contain the liver harming component that testosterone carries so taking as suggested and removing and the replacing the one patch is a lot safer in the long run (I’m a pharmacy technician hearing consults and facts about hormone therapy through the pharmacists I’ve worked with is where I contained this info)

    • @bryntendo
      @bryntendo 6 лет назад +20

      Yeah they work differently. The patches are designed to deliver the intended dose transdermally in the time outlined in the instructions. Sometimes for long acting drugs they put 24hrs because 1 day is a bit of an easier pattern to remember and get into the habit of, but you could usually get away with up to, say, 32hrs or something, but if you did that it'd be changing the time you apply a new one every day and it'd get confusing. It's only a small dosage so the likelihood is that the active testosterone will have either all been absorbed, or as much as is going to has been absorbed and any residual (accounted for in the dose + route of administration, dw) will have degraded to the point that it's totally ineffective. So at best, doubling up like that would do nothing, and at worst it would give you more than the intended dosage which could be harmful for a number of reasons. Best just to stick (hah, stick, lol) with the way you've been doing it already. You'll know if there's anything wrong when you get a blood test for your levels, and if it's not enough they'll just up your dose rather than mess around with the same patch for longer that is basically an unknown integer at that point.

      Part of the diagnostic criteria for testosterone where I live is 'for legal males with persistent androgen deficiency caused by established testicular disorder', and it's an authority script, so every time I need new repeats on my script my doctor has to call the medical board and say that I have an established testicular disorder 😂 I'm always like, yeah they're not there - That's a pretty easily established disorder 😂

    Hey Sam, how you doing, I have a question, I don't know if youve answered it before but how did you start t?
    Because in the UK I had to go to the docs to be put on a 2 year waiting list and I wanted to know how different it was for you
    Ps, keep making videos, they're awesome dude :)

    • @noahdavid3309
      @noahdavid3309 6 лет назад +13

      MyNameIsMatt I'm in the UK and in the system, if you go on the NHS you'll be referred to a GIC, the waiting list is about 2 years, then you'll be seen about once a month until you've been fully assessed (6-8 sessions usually, can be more or less), then sent to a clinic where you'll be met by someone who will physically assess you and decide if starting t is right for you, then you'll be prescribed testosterone and have 6 monthly checkups. I'm not sure of your age but if you're under 18 you have to be on hormone blockers for a year first, and you have to have parental consent. I hope this helps - obviously I'm not an expert but this is what I'm currently going through :)

    • @mynameismatt1785
      @mynameismatt1785 6 лет назад +8

      Noah David thanks a lot, I'm 18 in 3 months so age shouldn't be an issue. It's annoying how long the process can be but everything should be okay :)

      wow that sounds pretty complicated...
      I'm from germany and I only had to go to 4 sessions before I could start with testosterone. I had to get my chomosomes checked first tho but after that I could go to an urologist and get my shots
      I still had more sessions with my psychosomatic therapist afterwards. in total only for 1 and a hald year and I'm on testosterone for one year and even can get my surgeries now

    • @matthew2511
      @matthew2511 6 лет назад +4

      THE_NATE_PROJECT I've been using gel for 2 years and irritation can happen but it can be different for different people. The gel irritates my skin if I don't let it fully dry and put clothing on. Which happens frequently as the gel, at least the one I'm using takes too long to dry like it says 15 mins but for me it takes longer. I can't say anything about if it's better then patches or not as I've never used them.

    • @dantemendoza938
      @dantemendoza938 6 лет назад +1

      It's made of alcohol so if that irritates your skin the gel will irritate your skin too. I don't know what brands of it there are where you live but in Argentina we have androlone and it takes less than a minute to dry.

    I do gel and there’s not too many cons. I’ve been on it for a week and a half, but so far nothing serious has happened. I apply my gel daily onto my shoulders. The dose is about 12mg per pump, which I use two pumps daily.
    A few downsides is waiting for the gel to absorb enough into your skin so you can put a shirt on for the day, or night. I apply it at night, so I wait about an hour or so for it to absorb before I put on a nightshirt (a tank top works perfectly while you’re waiting for it to dry). The gel did make my shirt stick to my shoulders, making me peel away the shirt when I woke up in the morning.
    The gel won’t completely dry for 2-3 hours and you will have to shower or wash off your shoulders daily because the gel needs a clean surface to be absorbed on

  • @nate6045
    @nate6045 6 лет назад

    Hey just a heads up about any transdermal patches; depending on your genetics and/or body heat, you may not be getting the full 4mg daily. I know when I was on fentanyl I had to leave each patch on for like a week and stack the patches because it would absorb soooo slowly. Make sure you get some frequent blood tests to make sure your body is absorbing is properly. If it's not, you may need to apply one every 24hrs but keep two at a time. Hopefully this won't happen and it titrate normally but you should stay vigilant either way.
    Also the best place to put a transdermal patch is on your chest. It won't irritate less. Trust me. You can also put it on your bum if you want to hide it. Make sure you always put it where there isn't a lot of hair.

    Just an input about injections vs gel:
    I've been using gel since the beginning - for me the changes happened super fast, within 3 weeks you could notice a difference and I passed with my voice. So whether you use gel, patches or injections you get the same dose of T = the changes will happen basically at the same speed

    The reason why you apply it to the gray areas is because Testosterone is Fatty soluble and those tend to be the fattier parts of the body. The other areas tend to be more muscle than fatty tissue.

    I started off on these patches many years ago. I got weird skin burns where i placed the patch and i got the backache/spasms. my legs got the worst of it and they were so sore. Taking off the patch and trying to heal was the worst of it. If your super sensitive, look into using the gel. I wish I tried that first tbh. I got changes pretty quick also on the patch so to each their own regarding injections work faster vs topical. As for the patch Never again for me! This is just my opinion and my experience of what I went through.

    I hate the T-gel, it does dry the skin out and there are soo many places on the body you cant put it on + you can accidentally give others a to high T lvl if they touch the skin that you put the T-gel on, you have to make sure you take a bath before you put T-gel on because if you do it later on the day the T-gel will be washed of and give a lower t-lvl and you really have to think twice if you want to go to a pool. But I live in Denmark and I only have to take T injections every 6 week.

    I felt the same way. I used to do the injections but after a while I got tired of sticking myself with needles. I tried to do the patches but apparently I’m really allergic to them so now I’m on the gel. Honestly I feel like the gel is the best option. You don’t have to stick yourself with needles and there’s now redness/irritation (at least not for me). It’s great.

    I switched to gel bc I hated injections bc it scared me so much, but I ended up hating gel even more bc I have depression and it was a hassle to remember to shower, reapply and cover it up everyday, so I just switched back to injections (once every two weeks), but this time I'm at a different doctor and they let me come in and do the shot for me there. Just a quick nurse's visit twice a month.

    I used to use patches (not T). You had to wear the same one for 4 days and put them on your abdomen or thigh and they sucked! I still have a scar from months ago. I'm glad the T patches are changed daily.

    I have estrogen patches and the same thing happens to my skin. Not fun. But i like the steady stream of hormones better than the up and down of other methods.

    Hi, thanks for your videos. I am a cis man who does not produce testosterone due to an accident. I have done injections and patches. The patches were very hard on my skin. I now do the gel. I like it very much. Just a few pumps a day and I am good to go.

    Have you ever heard of Testosterone pellets? Sometimes I feel like the only transguy who has haha. I took injections for a year before switching to pellets. Pellets are inserted every 3-4 months by a doctor. It's really nice because there's no injections, less hormonal flux (and as someone with bipolar disorder, a stable mood is important), and less hassle because it's only a few times a year. The biggest downside is it's a little more expensive and you have to go into the doctor to have it put in (and the insertion leaves you a little gimpy for a few days) but I really, really recommend it :)

    i stopped injecting T because i got sick of it too. so far i havent had T in 2 months, which sucks bc i menstruate again, but i just... cant bring myself to keep stabbing myself. its tedious and hard on my anxiety. i just got a prescription to the gel but havent used it yet. im worried though because despite being on T for 3 years, my voice hasnt changed. and knowing that the gel is much slower to injections, im not that excited to start again.

    Needles don’t scare me. I have no idea why people are afraid of them. I just stab and go. Patches sound so inconvenient.

      Brandon McNeill lol me too, literally just did my first shot myself the other day and it was easier than I thought. Didn’t even feel it aside from the little pinch when it goes in. Like when the nurse did them they hurt longer... oh well I guess the thought of poking yourself is rough for most people

    I haven't come out yet but when I do I am going to use needles I guess, I'm already used to needles (a lot lol) and it works better, doesn't itch and it doesn't leave a mark. But if that works for u why not😛🙏🏼

    Hey well I’m also Trans, pre everything and i have growth hormone deficiency. For this i have to take growth hormone injections EVERY DAY. I sympathise I really do just remember this so when you take testosterone don’t worry about how. You do you but don’t stop injections just cause you don’t like injections. Look I honestly don’t care which you choose just remember this when you are irritated with the side effects of the patches

    Sam I was wondering, as I'm thinking about taking testosterone patches myself, where would you get them? A pharmacy? Does a doctor order them for you or do can you get them off the shelves? Does insurance pay for them or do you have to pay out of pocket? When do you start showing signs that the hormone is taking change? Voice deeping etc. Sorry if this is a lot of questions and I love your videos. I'm new to watching you actually and transitioning into a male which is going painfully slow.

    I've always heard good stuff about T creams/gels. They sound like the most practical form for me personally. But patches do sound like a good option as someone who could no way in hell give himself an injection.

    Hi Sam, quick question, I’m doing a lot of research on trans ftm cuz one of my best friends is finally out and I want to help as much as I can(literally last night I watched all your videos). But he said he wants to get so wasted on his bday (like 2 weeks from now) my question is can u drink while taking T? Cuz I’m afraid, thanksssss btw THAT SHIRT IS SO GOOD I SWEAR 😍👌🏼

    Cool, I didn't even know patches existed. I get a big injection every 3 months, it's a different type of T and I get less peaks. Also, only get 4 injections every year. Just mentioning in case there's people that didn't know there's different type of injections.

  • @kristopherdawne

    Wow I cannot fathom the idea of getting T injections every week. That sounds like straight-up hell and I'd stop T injections if that were the case too. I get mine every 3 months. Like my next injection is in June and the week before the next injection, my levels are still comfortably in the normal range for cis men...

    I'm not a fan of injections but I think that works best for me right now because I am only 5 months on T. I'd consider patches or gel in the future but I have sensitive skin as well as bad eczema that flares up. I'm still recovering from a really bad skin flare up (it looked like I was sunburned on my face and neck) and I had to deal with that for months, so I may just stick (heh puns) with injections for the rest of my life.
