    The only Chinese-made knife I have is the Marbles version of the old Camillus G.I. (Demo) knife and I have to say I am impressed - it is made as well as the original and takes a razor-sharp edge.

    Okay... gotta get me one of those RR Trappers! I was surprised to hear that Buck knives are hard for you to sharpen. Are you talking about their S30V steel? Their standard 420hc sharpens like a dream with just a few strokes across a ceramic rod.

    modern buck knives are generally made from 420hc and not only is it very easy to sharpen but, it also holds an edge well. typically from time to time you run into knives that don't seem to hold an edge well and much of the time the reason for that is when they are sharpened at the factory, heat gets built up in the edge and takes out the temper and it may take a few sharpenings to get through that burned steel to where it will hold an edge like it should. i've had this issue on knives from $5 all the way up to $200 and going by what i just said i have had good success after having sharpened through that damaged steel. it happens all the time. just a bit of useful information i hope you or someone else finds of use.

      I have had similar experiences using new knives that have chipped , rolled and dulled easily under light normal use , but after a few sharpening's I had dramatic improvements. a few times I had all but given up on a couple knives but after multiple times fixing the edge are now holding a fine edge under regular use. there are many variable's for a good edge for a knife. THANKS for the knowledge.

    Big problem with Rough Rider knives, they are highly addictive , you have been warned. Stag bone collection of Rough Rider knives are drop dead gorgeous. I ordered over 20 of them I think I'm going to have to go on a knife addiction program haha just joking. I also have the marbles us knife and the marbles Hawkbill steel blade knife, built like a tank, okay a small tank not a big one. I'm just getting into whittlin my first wood order of Basswood is coming today. Rough Rider makes really good whittling knives especially their little Barlow knife is excellent for that. Don't forget to keep your first aid kit because like Blackie says they are really sharp. I also ordered a strop keep them Sharp

    Even CASE isn't what they once were. Many China knives are very good and they do carbon knives as well. Get one before the Trade War really kicks in. The Military issue knife is still issued to all of the Armed Forces. Had one in the Navy and saw them as recently as 5 years ago.

    Here's the problem. Rough rider is probably paying the Chinese workers who make those absolute squat. China has entire city blocks full of high rise lux towers and the are ghost towns because they'd rather wait until one of us comes over with money. They'd sooner let the buildings crumble before they let poor families like the ones working in Rough Rider factories rent it out for cheaper. That's the country china is. By buying Chinese, were allowing them to continue that way treating people they dont know like royalty while they let their own brothers go hungry as slaves. Don't by until they give their workers a fair shake.

    They are good, but there are obvious drawbacks. If you use these knives, the snap, lockup, wobble/tightness etc will degrade. The same isn't true of gec, case, or queen knives in most cases, the RR knives are also inferior to remington usa knives, schrade usa knives, buck usa knives, camillus usa knives, etc. The snap, walk and talk on a rough rider is tinny and cheapo feeling in comparison to a case, and especially in comparison to a gec. That being said, they are a cheap way to try out patterns of traditional pocket knife, and might be okay for a beater/user knife, or for tasks that you just wouldn't use a more expensive knife on, like cutting aluminum, cans, any overly abrasive material.

    Say Heah Blackie, It was this video that made me aware of Rough Rider Pocket Knives, So when I made my Wannabe Nessmuk Trio. I bought two Moose Pattern Rough Rider's both the same in Stag on sale for $7.95 apiece. The blade's are the same as on my Trapper's but in a Moose Patern. I also got lucky I jumped on a Adventure Swirn Guide, As soon as I got the E-Mail that it was available in 3V with White G-10 and Black Micarta Liner's I bought it right there and there. It's a 5" blade and I think in one of his book's (Nrssmuk's) He mentioned a 5" blade. I almost bought a Bark River but it was in the A2 and I wanted a 3V. I also have a exact copy of Nessmuk Double Bit Hatchet, I got the 2Hawks Double Bit Hatchet Trapper. Yeah, Your absolutly right. The Rough Rider are as nice as my Case Knives, I can't tell too much difference between them other than the price. I use that Moose Pattern Rough Rider and it hokd's a OK edge retention. And ofcource it look's good in my Nessmuk Trio. Thanx You, Blackie.,,.

  • @paulie4x1
    @paulie4x1 8 лет назад

    Say Heah Blackie, Except for a Nessmuk Belt Knife, I have 2/3rds of Nessmuk carry, I have a great double bit hatchet that's a very close copy of his Hatchet, I even got the Moose Pattern Slipping pocket knife, except my Rough Riders have the same blade styles of a Trapper with one being the spade clip tip. But in the Moose configuration and the blades are I'm the Moose Pattern and not side by side E of the Trapper, Your absolutely right, You educated me on my Khukuris and now pocket knives, But instead of getting a Nessmuk or Jessmuk, I got what you liked, Yup, I ordered the W. C. Master Woodsman in the 6" blade because I'm only using it to work wood with. One more thing, I decided to have mine made in the CPM 154, with Black G-10 with orange liners, and the sheath is a Leather square bottom dangler. Yup you helped me to decide on it, It's not a Nessmuk so it's not a Nessmuk Trio, But I think for what I will use it for, I think Nessmuk would agree with my choice heh heh heh.

    Just got my Rough Rider Trapper, Amazon $11, and it is unbelievable. Nice looking, scary sharp, well built, solid, and very nice fit and finish. A beautiful knife. Needs to be worked a little and oiled to loosen up, but that's normal. You armchair commandos may think you need a $400 titanium and S30V flipper on bearings for self-defense, but I can tell you that this pocket knife is nothing to trifle with. It is the first knife I have ever had that actually scared me with its sharpness. In a pinch, I'm certain it can cut the mustard!

  • @CadenVekk
    @CadenVekk 10 лет назад

    As per this video, I went and bought a Rough Rider. I bought the RR066 jigged amber bone lockback folding hunter. Typically, 440 stainless is crap. As it turns out RR uses 440A which is the better version of the 440 series. $17 shipped.
    I've had this knife since end of July 2013. And I carry it as my EDC and I've had to sharpen this thing twice.
    My only criticism is the liners and the bolsters. The liners are too thin and a bit wobbly (for my taste) and the bolsters are nickle silver and I just hate the way NS tarnishes and the one I got, the bolsters aren't flush with the liners, there's a bit of a separation. Over all? Great knife, especially for the price.
    I also bought 3 RR221 all steel folders. I had an old Winchester knife that I carried in highschool (tucked behind my ankle in my converse ;) ). I lost that knife and have been searching for years! I found the RR221 which is damn near the same knife! And for $4....I bought 3.
    Thanks for the info on Rough Riders.

  • @paulie4x1

    Say Heah Blackie, Yeah, recently I have been reading some good reviews about the Rough Riders in some Forums I belong to. But I have a vintage Camillus Silver Sword, I traded a friend, she was given this knife from her father who use to work at the National Cash Register Company (NCR). I traded her a Frost Peanut brand new never used, so she took it to her dad to approve the trade, the Camillus was and still is hard to open even for me, so I could imagine it was very hard for her to open it, that's the reason for our trade, the Camillus is U.S.A. made, and it's a stainless steel blade. He used that knife to cut wire etc. but I got it in very good condition, it's a three blade stockman with a wood inlay handle (sort of looks like a canoe pattern) and I got it sharp, I know she didn't know how to sharpen it. Anyhow it's hold's a great edge, and all I do is strop it to very sharp, I'll compare my Silver Sword to my carbon blades, and yes to my Case CV blades, I most of got lucky and I know it has to be tempered good because it went through alot when her dad used it. and it work's great for me now and what I use it for. So there it is, people that say Stainless Steel is junk, I don't think so, That's what I'm talking about, , ,

    It's good to hear the opinion of someone who grew up around not so good knives, I used workman's knives (and one 3/4th hand Douk Douk) well into my teens. You don't take them for granted if you know you loose or destroy the one you have....that's it. I got a Moon Glow Rough Rider Trapper and I like it, it's very good for the price and I appreciate it, will it replace the SAK I've used since my teens? No, but I'd feel fairly confident of it being able to do it's job when I do take it out.

  • @Dan-sq5cv
    @Dan-sq5cv 7 лет назад

    Good points. I have a couple of RR's and I must agree they are very good for the price. It is also my preference to buy American and a Case, a Bear& Son, or a USA made Gerber or Kershaw are better materials and general better fitted, if all you can afford is $10 or $12 then the RR is a good option. I guess what I am saying is, that comparing the RR to other knives from China even with American company names on them they are at the top of the list.

    Blackie, you have ventured onto sacred ground with SOME knife guys. Not me. A good knife is a good knife, I don't give a rat's behind WHO made it! I own many knives and RR are among the best. Fit and finish is superb. Walk and talk, for the most part, is also excellent. And I don't care HOW much the little Chinaman gets paid for making them. If he want's more money, find a different job! In the meantime, I'll continue to buy these great knives! Now, if they would only come out with a carbon steel (1095? D2?) stockman!
