🎃so true! I remember our first Christmas where we thought the 5 year old would want to spend time unpacking the heritage ornaments and decorating the tree...he lasted 2 ornaments and wandered away.
We are doing the holidays in our home this year. Having family over etc. Intention is it is our kiddos safe space and they have their room for any needed down time.
🍂 Honestly, though, the struggle is often with bio parents who pop up unexpectedly, change plans last minute, don't prioritize their children or expect our family to pivot for them. That strains the relationship with us and their children, especially when arrested development is a factor because of their own trauma and addiction patterns. Bending over backwards to keep the relationship vs. boundaries is a hard balance this time of year.
I guess when I think of Thanksgiving, I don’t necessarily focus on origin of the holiday as much as the concept of having a day set aside to be thankful for all we have!
Thanksgiving is based on so many traditions from fall harvests and there were similar celebrations before the whole pilgrim thing. I also think it’s okay to change the meaning of something for the better. To me it’s a day where everyone remembers to be kind, where we are grateful for our family and friends and we tell them that, a day where we band together to help those less fortunate than us, and a time to celebrate the season. I think it’s very beautiful
@@adoptinformed I still watch all of your videos! For anyone wondering, I first came here when we were considering foster/adoption from foster care, and we now are super close to adopting a beautiful toddler whom we have had with us for nearly a year. I got lots of tips from Katie. It is good to start out having as much info as possible and knowing where you want to end up.

Awww yeah it is always surprising to see how kids will react!

I prefer hosting for that same reason! It’s always nice to be on your “home turf”.
Really useful and timely! 🎃

Yes, that can be so hard! Especially when your child has expectations of what bio family may or may not do for the holiday!

Personally, i don't think you should celebrate Thanksgiving; the history of the holiday is very problematic. Celebrate Native American Day instead!
