  • Our camping trip to Shawnee State Park in West Portsmouth, Ohio from Sunday through Wednesday, July 9-12, 2023. As always, we enjoyed the kayaking, fishing, hiking and biking through the park. We visited the Shawnee State Park Lodge, enjoying the historical information and artwork scattered throughout the lodge. Joe was especially drawn to the painting of Shawnee Chief Blackfish, who captured and befriended Daniel Boone, Joe's 5th great-grandfather! If there's ever anything you want to know about Daniel Boone, Joe is your man - I think he's read every book ever published on him, lol!
We also visited the city of Portsmouth, about 20 minutes from the state park. We were mesmerized by the beautiful murals painted on the floodwall along the Scioto River. There are 60 murals depicting 200 years of history of the town, all painted by the same talented artist. The murals are 20 feet high and extend for 2,000 feet, several blocks long. They are beautiful, and a wonderful testament to history of the town and what it is known for. There is a lot of information about the murals on the internet, and an mobile app called Portsmouth Murals that can be downloaded for a total video and audio immersion into each mural. But seeing it in person is truly an amazing experience! The quaint shopping area of the town is also very nice.
We hope you enjoy this video, and we thank you for sharing our camping journey!

I had messaged you on your Facebook page but I wanted to message on here and say I'm really glad you guys enjoyed your time in this area! Shawnee is my local campground and I've camped there my whole life. I absolutely love it, but it does need some updating. Hope to see you guys camping here again some time! Safe travels

That route in certainly looked sketchy. Did you find out if there was another way in? We are headed there in September. That did look like some nice kayaking. Did you catch any fish?

There are easier routes for sure. We were coming directly from Jackson Lake SP, and that route was the sketchiest, so don’t do that! Just a couple fish, but the lake was nice!

Thanks! The worst roads were those coming directly from Jackson Lake, all back roads. Going home straight up Rt. 23 much much better! It’s worth the ride, especially since your family enjoys kayaking. Beautiful lake! 😊

There are other ways to get there without all the back roads

We feel the pain of poor or no cell service. Our last two state parks, we have had no service. We watch our security cameras to make sure our automatic fish feeders work. Also we like to stay in touch with our family if there is a Emergency. Thank you for the movie recommendations. My wife and I now make it a game of "How bad are the campground roads". We have started noticing how bad the last few miles before the campground are. Thank you Joe for another great song. Peace out you guy.

Not having internet is both bad and good. Kinda nice to get away from everything, but hard not to worry if everyone/everything back home is okay! And yes, you never know how the camp roads are going to be until it’s too late to turn back! Thanks for watching and for your nice words! 🥰
