    From Wikipedia:
The Delaware Memorial Bridge is a dual-span suspension bridge crossing the Delaware River. The toll bridges carry Interstate 295 and U.S. Route 40 and is also the link between Delaware and New Jersey. The bridge was designed by the firm known today as HNTB with consulting help from engineer Othmar Ammann, whose other designs include the Walt Whitman Bridge (which is similar in appearance to each of the Delaware Memorial Bridge spans, except for being a single span with more lanes) and the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. It is also one of only two crossings of the Delaware River with both U.S. Highway and Interstate Highway designations, the other being the Benjamin Franklin Bridge.
The bridges provide a regional connection for long-distance travelers. While not a part of Interstate 95, they connect two parts of the highway: the Delaware Turnpike (Interstate 95 in Delaware) on the south side with the New Jersey Turnpike (later Interstate 95 in New Jersey) on the north side. They also connect Interstate 495, U.S. Route 13, and Route 9 in New Castle, Delaware with U.S. Route 130 in Pennsville Township, New Jersey (at the settlement of Deepwater, New Jersey).
The bridges are dedicated to those from both New Jersey and Delaware who died in World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Persian Gulf War. On the Delaware side of the bridge is a War Memorial, visible from the northbound-side lanes. The toll facility is operated by the Delaware River and Bay Authority.
The Delaware Memorial Bridge is the southernmost and the largest fixed vehicular crossing of the Delaware River. It is also the only fixed vehicular crossing between Delaware and New Jersey. However, at Fort Mott, New Jersey, there is a small amount of land on the New Jersey side of the river that is part of the State of Delaware, and thus there are pedestrian crossings in between those states, but not spanning the river. The Cape May-Lewes Ferry provides an alternate route between travelers from New Jersey and the Northeastern states to southern Delaware.

We always take this way from NC to NJ instead of staying on 95 and going through Philly. It's a great view.

Of what, the Du Pont chemical factories? 🙂🙂 I've taken 95 through Philly a couple of times to avoid traffic... and it's only worse.

I always liked this bridge. Not fancy, very utilitarian and functional - green paint like it was built by the Army Corps of Engineers. Also feels very strong - I haven't noticed any deck flex when I've been on it. It actually reminds me of how I envision Delaware runs - not a lot of fuss, just gets the job done. No stinkin' cable stay bridge needed here. I also liked that on busy travel days like Thanksgiving Eve they didn't collect tolls to help the traffic keep moving. I haven't seen that in years.

Again, the Delaware Memorial Bridge is one of America's scariest bridges and is the only gateway bridge from Delaware to New Jersey and vice versa. This part of the Delaware Valley is the Wilmington, DE metropolitan division consisting Cecil County MD, New Castle County DE and Salem County NJ.

Scary? Try the Bay Bridge in Annapolis or the Sunshine Skyway in Tampa.. and it's not really the only bridge. You can take various bridges closer to Philly- but yes, it the only one going to Delaware. If you want a nice change of pace - take the ferry from Cape May. Very nice - but out of the way depending on where you need to go in DE.

Both Wilmington, DE Metro and the Delaware Memorial Bridge are within the Philadelphia Metro Area...due to the fact that the Philly Metro is a Tri-State Metro...like Chicago, NYC, Memphis, TN, Cincinnati, etc.

@@ryanearles2024, the Delaware Valley (Metro Philly) is actually a quad state metro area and the only quad state metro area in the US. If you're wondering the 4th state you missed, it's Maryland. The Susquehanna River in Maryland divides Metropolitan Baltimore to the southwest and the Delaware Valley to the northeast. Also, the Delaware Valley is Metropolitan Philadelphia.

The Delaware Valley isn't the only metro area in the US within 4 administrative divisions, Metropolitan DC has 4 administrative divisions too which are Washington DC, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia, even though it's a tri-state area, not a quad state area because DC is not a state, but a federate and city.

@@CrystalClearWith8BE A Quad State Metro? Wow, I didn't know that. Thanks.

The day I drove it, there was a large wreck where it narrows on the Delaware side. Sat in traffic for almost an hour. Other than that, OK. Arrived in DC right in the middle of rush hour. Not OK, though I've been stuck there many times.
