In Texas we have fire ants. I use a combination of water and orange oil and have good luck w it. I have raised beds (3.5 ft high). I DO use chemical fire ant killer around the outside base of raised beds. It’s a constant battle.

@@nancyfinney5505 Thank you so much. A Floridian and the neighborhood and my lawn is infested with fire ants. Plus, I'm allergic to the stings (not deadly but huge swellings and aches last a week). I have some towers but the ants have climbed them since I quit buying the winter cucumbers (no peels to spread arouhnd, ants HATE them).; I will get/make some orange oil to go with the cucumber peels. I love cukes, but, not the scrawny things in winter.

Im brand new to gardening and while i did plant a little too early due to me thinking i would have had a much needed knee surgery well my garden got hit by a late freeze BUT because i am a male and well 1/2 an inch to us is like 3 inches in real life. Well i buried them a little too deep but that saved my seeds. I went from seeds as i had no clue what my soil was like until i went to use my broadfork to help turn the hard soil. Anyways i saw lots and lots of earthworms and then i knew. Anyways, i have been watching your videos when i came across it one day while i was looking for what certain plant sprouts looked like. You have helped me understand gardening so much. Everything is thriving except my strawberries but thats because i planted those from seeds 7 days ago lol. I just want to say thank you for having this channel so people like me who are new to gardening can get to understand what is going on and what to do. Just wanted to add that i am in The Texas Panhandle.

If you’re having trouble with nematodes in your tomatoes, try companion planting with mustard greens. I hear they help with nematodes. I did that for the first time this season, which for me started about two weeks ago. I’ve never had problems before but I figured harmless precautions can’t be all bad.

Hello Mark, I saw your cucumbers over producing for you. Yeah, we all have that problem as most people will snub their nose's at free cucumbers, but pickles (anything) are a great source of Probiotics which can help bring down Inflamation in your body which is what causes pain in your body. So here goes: I make a mean batch of Ice Water Pickles also called Cucumber lime Pickles. You will need to get some cooking lime for this. I buy Mrs. Wages Pickling Lime. I buy mine from Walmart Stores I don't know if you have Walmat Stores in Australia; But if you do this Pickling lime has the Recipe on the package. This is a great way of getting cucumbers used up that no one else. It is a time consumming recipe but your pickles are nice and crisp. We love them they taste great as a side dish . Also put a bit of shade cloth in front of the side that gets hot sun in summer. Next year I will try to grow a couple rows of corn to do this. You sprinkle the diatomaceous earth in a thick layer from the center of the mound out about two feet all the way around the mound. All mounds must be treated at the sam time. It’s a good idea to do this when you’re in a dry period so that the powder does not get washed away. Give it two weeks and then check the mounds. If there is activity repeat the process. The kill rate is about 70-80%. If you keep at it you can improve those odds.

I've had to come up with a different option for my raised beds. There is such a wait on the Birdie beds. I've gone out over the last 8 weeks and have been buying live stock water troughs. Steel 2'×4'×2' mostly. Set them on standard 8" concrete blocks. They are a bit on the pricey side considering their size. I think the Birdie beds are a better deal if you can deal with the waiting period. Happy growing!!

Oh sorry, missed again! I got some too! The 2.5x0.5x.38. Half height ones with mesh trellis for my tomatoes in spring. I am short, lol, so I can prune and reach the tops of the trellis and climbing plants.

Arya Gujarathi I under plant things that are heat sensitive. I have the carrots planted between tomatoe plants so they're shaded from harsh sunlight but still get enough for growth. I do the same with spinich and lettuces, brocolli and cauliflower, those I plant under squash plants that I have growing over and across a wire cage to create an open and protected space. I do the same with peas and pole beans specifically to create such spaces for sun/heat sensitive plants.

in Melbourne i found those thinner birdies beds heat up from the sun a little to much & stress the plants out , plants look like they need a drink but it's just the heat that makes the plants droop , my wider birdies beds are much better , larger soil volume doesn't heat up as much

Dam I missed your live show, will be watching the replay, currently re-landscaping the backyard, and going to put in raised garden beds for the first time, so I've been watching your video's to how on earth to fill up these big raised garden beds. Whyalla S.A.

I bought four of the Birdies 18 inch high raised beds-I'm in Pennsylvania, USA. I'm five feet eight inches tall. The next Birdies purchase will be the 30 inch high mode. I made a base of two tiers of 8x8x16 concrete blocks to raise them up. Makes gardening sooooo much easier. If it suits your height- get the tall ones right off.
