  • @Brutalyte616

    Something you're overlooking is that Sentinel is meant to be the Custodes' downside, because while some of their units are expensive, most of their roster can be played on curve and are generally ahead of the curve in terms of stats and abilities compared to most other factions, even with the new cards that have come out with each rework. Sentinel mitigating your card draw is supposed to hurt because if it didn't, Custodes would just be OP and unfair to everyone not playing Custodes, and nerfing their energy costs would probably put them so far behind they wouldn't be viable even in the most braindead caveman match-ups, even without Sentinel. However, Sentinel is something that can be played around because it forces the opponent to decide whether they want to kill your Custodes and let you draw something potentially worse for them next turn, or let it live and deny you card draw in exchange for not clearing your board.
    Something else to note is that Exemplar is unaffected by non-Custodian units, so vehicles and infantry are unaffected and you can use those instead to supplement your deck and board and essentially treat the Custodes like hero units.
    Moreover, because Exemplar triggers at the start of your turn, there are more mind games to play around. Does your opponent kill the Custodes and deny you its Exemplar effect on your turn in exchange for letting you draw by removing Sentinel, or do they allow you to keep the Custodes on the board and suffer the Exemplar effect in order to deny you card draw.
    Then, when it's your turn, you can either put into play a second Custodian with Exemplar and run your first Custodian into an enemy to kill it AFTER it's already triggered its Exemplar effect, or you can keep both alive and threaten your opponent with both of them. Now the same dilemmas as before are in effect, but it's compounded by the presence of the second Custodian; does your opponent let them both live, deny you card draw, AND deny their Exemplar effect in exchange for letting two Custodes units live until your next turn, or do they use resources to respond to your threat? And that's assuming they have a choice in the matter and that they can respond to your units at all, because a lot of these new Custodians have high health values, which means they're harder to clear with regular damage and need straight removal options, which are usually finite resources.
    Custodes as a faction are easy to play at low level , but the skill ceiling involved with them, especially now, can be ludicrously high, and a high-level Custodes main is a scary thing, because they managed to stay in the game despite all the handicaps and the power creep of the last few years.
    I daresay only a handful of factions are going to be able to deal with these new Custodes, and it's going to be because they can somehow mitigate the threat of Custodes without killing them.
    Alpha Legion players rejoice. And Space Wolves? Congratulations. You now have ANOTHER faction that won't immediately die when you run into them, so enjoy all of those Hunt procs before you get stabbed by those Guardian Spears.
    On the topic of Valdor? You're right, he sucks like damn near every legendary Warlord does nowadays, but even so you're still underestimating his end-game.
    His Reckoning is awkward to try and get out in the early game, even with Magna Imperator unless you can cheat it out a turn or two early, in which case Valdor only needs 4 turns to lower the cost of his Reckoning to 10 and make it playable, and assuming you maintain your tempo? It'll be at 10 energy by Turn 6, and 8 energy at Turn 7, meaning you can theoretically play it on curve.
    As for Emperor's Spear Valdor? Well +1 attack for the rest of the game and 5 health restored is par for the course, but it's his passive effects and active that are potentially ridiculous.
    First Strike is good, +1/0 for each friendly troop(TROOP, not Custodian) is even better, but the wording on the active is the scary part; '2 Energy: Draw and put in play a random Custodian'. That wording implies either you play a random Custodian that is still in your deck, OR it means you draw a card AND put in play a random Custodian meaning it nullifies Sentinel in exchange for 2 energy and lets you cheat out a random Custodes every turn as a bonus.
    Regardless, when Valdor plays his Reckoning and transforms the Emperor's Spear, the game has gone into overtime, because Valdor has said 'Screw nuanced tactics, we're playing Custodes Swarm now, and if you try and rush me, I'm not going down quietly because I have to look good in front of all my boys who are hyping me up.'
    If Valdor manages to get his Reckoning off, you need to finish him ASAP, or you're going to figure out why the Adeptus Custodes are called 'The Ten Thousand' and why he's their Captain-General.
    I'm just saying, don't jump the gun on these new Custodians just because we're all traumatized by how painful Sentinel is.

    • @zero18000
      @zero18000 6 месяцев назад +2

      Personally I like the idea of having Sentinel as a downside and don't want it removed...but they need to be highly compensated for this crippling effect.
      The new abilities feel far too restrictive without enough reward-instead of high risk, high reward, we're overall getting high to very high risk, decent to good reward. To make use of their various abilities, I'll: Not be drawing cards automatically every turn, need to have 1 Custodes out at a time, the one needs to survive, and when played have an enemy with higher attack than my own card. Nothing I've seen so far feels worth all the trade offs.
      Just consider virtually all of the other releases. Death Guard as an example, have lots of poisoning effects, with cards that add up more stacks of poison, and units which get stronger when enemies die of poison OR do something extra to poisoned enemies-tons of synergy. They also have lots of Backlash cards with plenty of support for those-enabling them twice, or doing something when a backlash effect is triggered, etc. And most importantly their various abilities can synergize together-you can have cards with backlash that will strengthen (or at least, not work against) poison and vice versa.
      Here we're trying to build wide board (because of Sentinel) while also being expected to only have one Custodes on board? Who also needs to survive a turn to get his effect?

    • @Brutalyte616
      @Brutalyte616 6 месяцев назад

      @@zero18000 Yes, Sentinel is objectively bad on its own, but it forces you and your opponent to blame around it because their options are either kill it and let you draw, let it live and deny you a draw on your next turn, or disable it so that it can't act while still preventing you from drawing. Gotta love Stun and Can't Attack...
      But Exemplar expands on that and makes it so that disabling a Custodian isn't always the best solution if their Exemplar ability is unaffected by the inability to act, and incentivizes cycling through your troops to either get better Exemplar effects or to simply force your opponent to respond somehow and get swept up in your mind games.
      It also encourages more mixed unit plays because Exemplar only counts other Custodians, not infantry or vehicles, so mixing in Imperial Army or Mechanicus cards is encouraged, and it also opens up some interesting options if we're going to see cross-play between the Custodes and the Sisters of Silence, as I've speculated elsewhere.

    • @Willehable
      @Willehable 6 месяцев назад

      I think you misunderstand, very few people argue that Custodes shouldn't have any drawbacks, just that sentinel as it exists has been too big of a drawback and, looking at the cards we've seen so far, probably still will be. This is obvious in how many Custodes troops are never played which makes it less interesting and fun to play. Also clear in how many Custodes meta decks have been very tactic-heavy and uses a lot of neutral cards, though Valdor could mitigate it a bit. The game should either tone down sentinel, at least for low cost troops or increase their stats or abilities to make up for it in other ways than Examplar or Nemesis, which is my suggestion.
      So I agree with Raziel, these traits together, Sentinel and Examplar, do not look good so far. Nemesis is just doing its own thing. They seem to work against each other making them awkward and stilted rather than synergize. For Valdor I also agree, he will be trickier to use now as his card draw will be conditional making it harder to compensate for sentinel and his reckoning seems both generic/less fun and not very good as again his passive and his active will work against each other. To get his reckoning you need to really build your whole deck for it, fill it with Custodes troops with Exemplar at all energy levels to make sure you can trigger it as often and as early as possible. But then you're again hurting yourself with Sentinel from the very beginning which you cannot even mitigate with Valdor's ability but at the same time you also need to fish for that legendary tactic Magna Imperator to have any chance at getting the reckoning. But if your goal is to get to late game and trigger reckoning, now you've also actively made it worse by putting a lot of low cost Custodes, decreasing your chances of getting a big golden body on the board with The Emperor's Spear ability. Let's say you put that 2E Heateron Lictor in your deck and draw him. For that turn all of your efforts and deck building, Valdor's reckoning basically draws a card and puts in play a troop for the same cost as the ability. That's an unfortunate example but it shows my point and its a whole lot likelier than getting all those many conditions to trigger that reckoning on curve. Not to mention how obvious you are making your strategy to the enemy who will be able to react and play around it to deny your reckoning a lot better.
      I am also fairly sure that "2 Energy: Draw and put in play a random Custodian." means that you draw a random Custodian from you deck which is then automatically put in play. The other interpretation is inconsistent with Everguild's mechanics and previous wording, otherwise it would be more like "2 Energy: Draw a card and put in play a random Custodian." Maybe they could make it clearer with for example "2 Energy: Draw a random Custodian and put it in play." if people think it's ambiguous but I wouldn't say so. I'll eat my words if it turns out I am wrong and it'll invalidate that one part I said about Valdor's reckoning but I'd be surprised.

    • @Brutalyte616
      @Brutalyte616 6 месяцев назад

      @@Willehable Agree to disagree there. The issue is that Sentinel encouraged either an all-in swarm approach where you just overwhelm the opponent with superior troops and lots of them, or you relied on tactics and cheap strategies to game the system that didn't really use any of the Custodes toolkit, because the lack of card draw was just too insurmountable a problem as the meta progressed.
      Exemplar goes towards solving the issue, because now it makes the opponent's decision to deal with a Sentinel unit or not more significant to both size, and because it's reasonable to expect a Custodes player to only have one troop out at the start of their turn, if that, then it trivializes the inherent difficulty of proccing Exemplar and establishes a new playstyle of tempo Custodes.
      Time will tell if I'm right about this, but I wouldn't be so dismissive just yet.
