Sheffield has 40K hardcore football fans that watch football regardless of success or division. Leeds has 20K hardcore supports, which is 50%. Take this season Leeds average 32K watching football Sheffield averages 53K watching football.

As a Newcastle fan I think sheff weds is the biggest club in Yorkshire and the best fans I've seen at St James

I am a Blade and having been present at a few I can vouch for the “cut the atmosphere with a knife” tension. There is nothing like it with any other game no matter how otherwise important, because this one is THE most important. The fact that they don’t happen sometimes for years only adds to it. I was there at the Lane (and how absolutely gutted I was) when finally and quite recently in historical terms Wednesday managed to do the double over us. I was present at Hillsborough when United beat Wednesday at a game where their American full backs parents had come over he related that his parents just could not believe the atmosphere...it really is that palpable! We won that one!

Wickerrman the premier league has lost its soul. Lower league English clubs and even Scottish derbies that lack in quality are just as good to watch, proper atmosphere, crunching tackles and a proper hatred between fans, which the PL is losing
Agreed. I'm from Liverpool and a Reds fan to boot, and I think the atmosphere and passion nowadays in the Prem is shite. Whenever I'm abroad and people hear I'm from Liverpool, they are always talking up Anfield saying "The atmosphere is amazing!!". But aside from the European nights of ten years ago it is crap for the most part, and the 'famous atmosphere' of the 60s, 70s and 80s has long since died.
Until we get safe standing and cheaper tickets to go with it, the atmosphere is going to stay shit.
In the meantime it's these fierce rivalries that have survived the lower leagues where you get a proper atmosphere.

I think there are a lot of teams that don't get enough credit. Being a Southampton fan I can accept that it's hard for a northern club to bring 5000 fans but even so the best fans I see are between villa and Newcastle the London clubs for all their talk have no soul and only sing when they're winning. Liverpool is great in Europe but full of tourists for league games away.

Sheffield Wednesday were formed by "little mesters" who were self employed craftsmen/manual workers who specialised in specific processes with steel making, thousands of people would watch them even in the early days at Olive Grove, Bramall Lane, Highfield etc. Them being more middle class is absolute fiction, the only reason United were formed was to generate revenue for Bramall Lane they were not some sort of working class crusaders bringing football to the poor, Wednesday had very working class roots the same as United. I'd agree with that Neil and I'm a Unitedite, Wednesday draw support from the likes of Parson Cross in particular and that's not exactly Dore is it!? I think from a United perspective I've always found Wednesday fans to be - generally - more arrogant than United fans on the status of their club, that may be misinterpreted by United fans as a class thing, but actually I don't think it's anything to do with class. Wednesday fans that I've met and are friends with do definitely think they're bigger, better etc, but that is changing in my view, probably because Wednesday have obviously had so long out of the Premier League.
@@robincodna1437 Definitely agreed there Robin, there is very little to no class difference between the two clubs, both are in working class areas followed by working class people and with working class roots. The arrogance of some Wednesdayites could definitely be confused with a class complex, but I'd say it's because traditionally, or before 2000, Wednesday had been a bigger side and felt superior to United in terms of football but I don't think that necessarily translates off the pitch

I've been a dyed-in-the-wool Sheffield Wednesday fan since 1958. I have never, though, 'hated' Sheffield United. I always want the Owls to beat the Blades in a derby match (I always will) but I wish them all the best otherwise. Nothing anyone says will ever change me.

Officially one should only count league and major cup head to heads, then United are 4 wins in front, if you count all friendlies and county cup matches then Sheffield United are even more wins ahead.

I remember there was a guy from my hometown who played for Sheffield United back in the 70s. Billie Gillespie was his name.

I was annoyed that Sheffield had broken Aston Villa's record against Bournemouth (48000+) but 5h1t happens. So l waited to see the attendances once promoted to the top tier, either the very first First Division or Premiership. They were a lot lower considering where they both were, only 24,000 or there about. The big question is....where have 30,000 Yorkshire men gone?
