As an Australian, this rivalry makes a lot more sense. Here in the AFL your rival teams can be close to you (Adelaide v Port, West Coast v Fremantle, Carlton v Collingwood) but sometimes they're teams where you've just had really explosive games or some dramatic transfer saga (Hawthorn v Essendon, Hawthorn v Geelong, Hawthorn v Sydney), so it's not always dictated by proximity.
Love the other growing rivalries in the AFL too, like Bulldogs v GWS. Basically just because they have met in finals and stolen each other's star players. Great to watch.

As a Brighton fan, I have a weird mix of hate and love for Palace. I agree it's a weird rivalry but that's my favourite thing about it, it's one of a kind
There are dozens of high profile Derbys that practically every football fan knows about, and countless others in lower and non league... The very high profile ones that you've failed to mention include: The Old Firm Derby - Celtic vs Rangers; The Boenos Aires Derby - Boca Juniors vs River Plate; The Milan Derby - AC Milan vs Inter: The North London Derby - Tottenham vs Arsenal; Derby Della Capital - Roma vs Lazio; The North East Derby - Newcastle vs Sunderland, and many many more. All of which are incredibly intense and well known.
Palace Brighton is to me the most wholesome rivalry. It's all about the football, the rivalries origins, is in the football. I get why a lot of rivalries have to do with geography, but the best rivalries are all about the matches and a lot of these types of rivalries create those types of matches but they aren't born from it.
If you want a strange derby how about the "Distance Derby" between Wellington and Perth, 5,255 km apart. Or the Melbourne Derby between Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City who started off as Melbourne Heart, who were literally created for no other reason but simply to give Victory a rival.
The Melbourne derby sounds kinda of like the Copenhagen derby - Brøndby and FC København hate each other because Brøndby was created just to piss off København 😂😂😂

As a Brighton fan, I'm almost contractually obliged to hate Palace, but I also have a lot of respect for them, and I can't hate them as much as I'm supposed to. For one, I've always been impressed with the sheer noise that Palace fans make at games. They are some of the loudest fans I've ever heard at the Amex and they often drown us out at home games, despite having significantly fewer fans in the stadium than us, so big respect to them for that. But mostly, I respect them because of what their fans did for us during the 97/98 season. Brighton were facing financial ruin, the board had recently sold off our ground (The Goldstone) and had no plans for where we were going to play the following season, and it was looking very likely that Brighton would cease to exist as a football club at the end of that season. So a now-legendary group of Brighton fans organized a 'Fans United' day during an otherwise unremarkable league match against Doncaster, firstly to help raise funds to keep the club afloat, but also to highlight our plight to the world. Using this new thing called "The Internet", Brighton fans issued an open invitation to fans of every club all around the world to come and support Brighton for a day, while wearing their own club colours. We literally filled the stadium for the first time in my lifetime that day. We didn't just have fans from clubs all across England turn up, we also had fans turn up from all over the world like Germany, France, Spain, Argentina....for a fairly meaningless League 2 (Division 3 as it was then..) game. It was an amazing turnout and an amazing atmosphere. What surprised me more though, was the sheer number of red and blue Palace shirts in attendance that day. There were THOUSANDS of them! I got chatting to a group of them during the game and asked them - "Why did you turn up to help us? We're rivals!", and they responded with "We *like* hating Brighton. If we didn't have you to hate, who else are we gonna hate?". I'll never forget that. I'll also never forget what the Palace fans did for us that day. They turned out in force and really got behind our team, (but just for that one game of course!) A lot of other Brighton fans didn't forget it either. Years later when Palace were facing similar problems of their own, us Brighton fans returned the favour and turned up in force when Palace held their own Fans United day. We hate each other, but there is also a lot of respect between us too. It's a unique rivalry to say the least lol
Check out the comment I just wrote on this video, I totally get what you mean, it's a much more respectly rivalry than the angery chaos that you get in the top teams, we hate each other but I respect the Palace fans for supporting their local team and getting as involved in the rivalry as we are, we like hating them, would be sad without it
I’m a Newcastle fan and as most football fans know we have a deep deep rooted rivalry with Sunderland, I loved this story I never knew this game was on this level gonna pay extra attention to this game in the future.
This video doesn’t do the rivalry justice whatsoever, it’s way more than just choosing a team to hate. The passion going into each match from both sets of fans is unreal
I remember 20 years ago Palace fans (25) coming to Field Mill , because there game away to Sheffield Utd was postponed . They sang through the whole game , think Stags were at home to Rochdale or Bury. We had a right good laugh with them .
To all the people in the comments saying 'this is a shit rivalry', 'plastic derby, means nothing' you clearly aren't a true fan of any team or been to a Brighton vs Palace game. You don't choose who you hate in football, it's a natural instinct. As a Brighton fan who's watched my team win and lose to Palace, felt the elation & despair, would give anything to beat them today I can tell you this rivalry is real, it is bitter with true raw emotion at every game. It isn't a 'bizarre derby' at all. The fact we aren't near each other if anything invigorates the distaste for each other even more than just location. Watch the game, see what it means to the fans before throwing away a big part of lower league football history so quickly.
I saw saw Brighton Palace last season as an Albion fan, its one of few fixtures we play where the Amex properly comes alive! If the fans were even half as energetic for other games as we are for Palace the Amex would be such an exiting place!
Disappointed in this documentary tbh doesn't do the rivalry justice, it's one of the fiercest in England, it's not hyped up by the media but it doesn't need to be you've got the fans giving it their all for the entire day. Also what's so beautiful is how it's an organic rivalry it just sort of happened over time due to having two clubs of a similar level and standing it's not this oh I hate you just cause you're closest (like that makes sense) and it means our fans aren't all friends like at Merseyside there's real passion involved
randomshotz13 yeh I prefer this derby to most other English derbies like i prefer it over the North London Derby and Merryside derby. Media don’t hype it up because all the media care about is talking about the ‘bigger’ games for the glory hunters cause they’ll make money. I’m from Australia but I’m gonna make sure to watch this game, really looking forward to it
Big Disappointment Having been to the Steel City Derby this year and also Brighton Palace I'd have to disagree also having been to many Brighton Palace games at both grounds there's a lot of trouble always. Palace do have a section of wannabee ultras who wont be involved in it all but most of them are still nasty cunts who sharpen pennies before the game just to try and do an extra bit of damage and Brighton isn't (shocker) just full of camp gays who don't want trouble. Don't make statements you know nothing about, you look like a twat
Alex Reid numbers were low but you have to look at why, it was a school night so the family stand which you can see on tv is emptier than normal, people also don't want to take there kids to the game due to the trouble there has been in the past, we've had brawls outside the Amex when palace turn up, the trains were on strike and the ground is mainly accessed by train by people from all over Sussex, it was the first full working week back at work and gave little time for people to finish work get ready and get to the ground... Especially if you cant get the train and also tickets were very expensive meaning you had to put up with all the other shit and pay out for it too!! Personally I went as did everyone I know and thousands of others. If anything it proves the fierceness of the rivalry that the police and fa came together to make it as hard as possible for people to turn up to try and minimise violence...
I'm a lfc fan and live in Brighton. The rivalry is so big that I prefer watching brighton palace than lfc united. That's how big of a day it is in the city
@@ellisjones7288 that derby is also about the history and economics of the region - the two cities have hated each other every since the Ship Cannal was built, which moved trade from Liverpool to Manc, and led to Liverpool suffering whilst manc prospered
Reciprocation is such a big part of a rivalry. It shouldn't be a rivalry really but both sets of fans hate the others more than anybody else so it has become Palace's key derby and Brighton's only one.
@@SandDune11 Congrts! Eternal mid table shit team, you want a cookie for such an amazing accomplishment? Your team will never be as relevant as City or Liverpool or United or Chelsea but keep dreamin. Your on par with Southhampton amd Aston Villa, congrats. Sheffield United is more relavent than your shit club
Joe Reynolds sort of like Norwich and Ipswich? There's like 44 miles between the two stadiums there. True there's fuck all in between but it's still a distance for a local rivalry
The only major clubs near Brighton are Palace, Bournemouth and Southampton. Southampton Portsmouth Derby is a thing. Bournemouth has Reading FC and than Brighton has Palace.
People may think it's a shit derby because it makes no sense as both clubs are nowhere near each other, but for both sets of fans it's the biggest game of their season. Palace need the points to get them off the bottom of the table and Brighton need the points to keep up their good start to the season. Either way the fans will get behind their teams and players who have played in this fixture like Zaha for Palace and Dunk for Brighton will inform new players about how much it means to the fans. It's a must win game for both sides.
HOLMESDALE USA tbf to him it's easily confused the m25 and m23 connect, both divide Palace and Brighton and if you're from Sussex anytime you travel to London or more north you take the m25 it's like engrained in your brain I'm gunna put it down as a brain fart
Eagles.... majestic bird of prey..much adored throughout the world. Seagulls... flying rats that steal food and shit everywhere... hated worldwide. EAGLES FOR EVER
This can't be a shit rivalry. There's no such thing. This game means so much to both sets of fans and no people who support the plastic teams will have no idea what this means.
Nope. Absolutely nothing to it. Completely made up. We couldnt bare not having a rival- how could we live without one? I mean we could have a rivalry with millwall, west ham, charlton but for some reason we 'forced' a rivalry with brighton... W eve been rivals for long time and there is a lot of reasons as to why we are rivals. Liverpool and Manchester are further away from each other then we are to brighton and that is a great rivalry so location means jackshit.
Love the rivalry ! It’s great the palace fans or Brighton fans don’t care what others think about it ! They just want to beat each other it’s brilliant rivalry, people used to say south coast derby with Portsmouth or Southampton FORGET it ! It will always be Crystal Palace no question for all Brighton Fans!
When a palace fan says Brighton isn't a proper football club 😂😂 okay mate look at yourself first. How about create a atmosphere with chanting your club rather than bang a drum and try and make it look like you have fans who give a shit
Welblack there's nothing wrong with banging a drum to make a bit more noise. We'd still make enough noise without it and obviously the fans give a shit or why bother turning up to watch a team at 20th in the league.
your the one that your club buys your "displays" and you need your song lyrics on the message board. dont talk to us about creating an atmosphere. just because you havent seen us at the amex in years.
The nearest club to palace is obviously Millwall, 5 or 6 mile I suppose? But Palace want a rival that they’ve got half a chance of bashing up..... so that puts Millwall out of the frame, coz Millwall would simply annihilate them! To be honest I’ve never seen any sort of palace firm when we’ve played them at selhurst Park let alone the Den?
The Palace & Brighton rivalry started in the mid 70s when both clubs were both in the old 3rd division a lot of people won’t know this but back then in the same old 3rd division Mansfield Town and Palace also had a fierce rivalry but over the past 40 years or so Mansfield and palace have gone in different directions palace on the up and Mansfield went downwards but now Mansfield are on the rise again and hopefully one day soon Mansfield will play Palace again competitively also back in the day Mansfield also had a rivalry against Brighton and Wrexham
The distance between the clubs helps build the animosity its us v them, South London v South Coast we don't have to co-exist daily so the hate can build, fester and then explode passionately on Tuesday UTA!!!
1:44 Only a Crystal Palace fan would be interviewed about Palace, and wear a Fiorentina Shirt.

Ethan Van Heel haha Melbourne City LOL
Such a great rivalry no one turned up to the last match
That's how big of a day it is in the city
of course you are.
That's how shit of an LFC fan you are
About the same distance, as Liverpool v Man Utd, which i class, as the glory hunter derby, nothing plastic about Albion v Palace.
Hahaha, theres much more to Liverpool - Utd dumbass
Bill Nye The BDSM Guy how is there?
@@ellisjones7288 that derby is also about the history and economics of the region - the two cities have hated each other every since the Ship Cannal was built, which moved trade from Liverpool to Manc, and led to Liverpool suffering whilst manc prospered
And I'm not a fan of either
@@billnyethebdsmguy7335 Not really. Man U seem to have rivalry with a few teams. Leeds in 70/80s?
Reciprocation is such a big part of a rivalry. It shouldn't be a rivalry really but both sets of fans hate the others more than anybody else so it has become Palace's key derby and Brighton's only one.
“They’re not a proper football club”
Well, I wouldn't call a yo-yo club like Palace a proper team anyway.
Aleex how are palace a yo yo club? We have been in the prem for 5 years and the last time we were here before that was 2005
we really aint a yoyo club m8
Ha ha so true
Palace literally haven’t experienced a relegation for 15 years
@@SandDune11 Congrts!
Cheers for saving our asses last season👍🏻🔵⚪️🔵⚪️
It is a strange derby this one, considering both teams are nearly 50 miles away from each other??
Joe Reynolds sort of like Norwich and Ipswich? There's like 44 miles between the two stadiums there. True there's fuck all in between but it's still a distance for a local rivalry
Nwah Nerevar the East Anglian Derby is basically Norfolk vs Suffolk though, and it has roots and exists outside of football
The only major clubs near Brighton are Palace, Bournemouth and Southampton.
Southampton Portsmouth Derby is a thing. Bournemouth has Reading FC and than Brighton has Palace.
Yes Copa90 actually made a video on this rivalry
“They’re not a proper football club”
Well we’re not stuck rock bottom with a stadium worse than my garden shed so you can shut up.
awfully refreshing seeing this comment with you guys hanging round relegation
6 points clear of the relegation zone, a point behind you shit lot and just beat you benders 3-2
Great stuff. Didn't know it was a rivalry at all
Nice rivalry lol. I like the eagles vs. seagulls thing!!
most rivalries makes me angry. this make me feel nice inside
0:03 it’s the legend himself Jim Daly
Up The Albion💙
Haydn 17 all your fans are always taking it up some where lol 😂😂😂
Fuck the Brighton scum

I love that C.P. Supporter who is wearing the jersey of a totally different team.
Do the dockyard derby (Portsmouth vs Plymouth Argyle)
Nitron2001 no
I now finally know why these two don't get on after years of wondering
Aka the m25 derby
Yeah it's the M23 derby
ha of course he doesnt even know what motor way it is
HOLMESDALE USA tbf to him it's easily confused the m25 and m23 connect, both divide Palace and Brighton and if you're from Sussex anytime you travel to London or more north you take the m25 it's like engrained in your brain I'm gunna put it down as a brain fart
Brixton Eagle exactly that! You can get all the way to Croydon from m23 where a lot of palace scum reside
Technically the M23 starts at Crawley
Do a video on Tuesday so people can see what the derby is actually like so they really understand.
I dont support any but brighton are better
Abdul Qadir Tareen not on paper
Joe Goodburn yup. Exactly
Joe Goodburn but by the way crystal palace are playing they might win
i dont support any of them either but palace r better
We're above them
Chesterfield vs Mansfield is as deep a rivalry as the majority mentioned in this comment section.
I respect B & H..... Big love from Man Utd
I’m from Los Angeles and this is exactly how I feel about Boston and San Francisco. “They’re not a proper club,” as the nice English lady said.
Eagles.... majestic bird of prey..much adored throughout the world.
Seagulls... flying rats that steal food and shit everywhere... hated worldwide. EAGLES FOR EVER
eagles...have you ever seen a wild eagle
@@XaviMacBash yeah
If a derby can be described as "fruity" it's not a real derby
It’s not a derby , it’s a rivalry
A Palace fan wearing a Florentina shirt 🤣
Tim BHA Ovard Palace are so plastic when they went up to the prem 10 thousand new fans turn up at their stadium. Hoping for a 3-0 win Monday UTA
wubadubdub your point is wrong
Nathan Studd palace have the best fans in England tho ??
Ben masters your telling me a bunch of hooligans are the best fans in England
Bit rich from you as a Brighton fan😂
I think it's a good rivalry, I don't have a problem with it.
Leverkusen&Brighton ✊
hardcore.sm ✊✊✊✊
Neverkusen & rainbow town, 2 losers!
You would think the guy wearing the florintina Jersey would wear a palace Jersey instead for the video
This can't be a shit rivalry. There's no such thing. This game means so much to both sets of fans and no people who support the plastic teams will have no idea what this means.
its shit mate
FIonn Lord well you don't understand. Mate
How? Because its not your traditional top 6 local derby? We hate them and they hate us- thats what I would call a rivalry.
Still shit rivalry.
It's Jim Daly. Brilliant youtuber.
This is the stupidest rivalry I have ever heard of.....
And one of the most passionate, go watch united vs city you loser
it's basically managers rivalry
Because?
Bleart Zeqiri ta qifsha nanan
Love the rivalry ! It’s great the palace fans or Brighton fans don’t care what others think about it ! They just want to beat each other it’s brilliant rivalry, people used to say south coast derby with Portsmouth or Southampton FORGET it ! It will always be Crystal Palace no question for all Brighton Fans!
Talking about your team in a Fiorentina shirt hahahaha
One man went to war🔴🔵⚫
Went to war with Brighton
nob. UTA
One man went to burn😉🔵⚪️
Nob, plastic cockney.
And got shit on by the seagulls!!! Fa cup fa cup
CANT WAIT TO SEE THIS GAME LIVE
3-2
You guys really need to do a documentary for blues vs villa
Millwa would only annihilate them off the pitch! Millwall have done nothing on the pitch in their entire history!
SEAGULLSSSS
EAGLESSSS
3-1
UP THE ALBION
The Palace & Brighton rivalry started in the mid 70s when both clubs were both in the old 3rd division a lot of people won’t know this but back then in the same old 3rd division Mansfield Town and Palace also had a fierce rivalry but over the past 40 years or so Mansfield and palace have gone in different directions palace on the up and Mansfield went downwards but now Mansfield are on the rise again and hopefully one day soon Mansfield will play Palace again competitively also back in the day Mansfield also had a rivalry against Brighton and Wrexham
LETS GO PALACE
The distance between the clubs helps build the animosity its us v them, South London v South Coast we don't have to co-exist daily so the hate can build, fester and then explode passionately on Tuesday UTA!!!

Spooky.
Do Colchester and Wycombe, Rivals but we are like 2 and a half hours away and we (Col U) always take alot away to them
Played in the cup a couple of days ago. Ten thousand empty seats. Huge rivalry my arse.
A Villa fan shouldn't talk shit.
From a team that has ten thousand empty seats every week lol.
What on earth are you on...almost every Brighton Game is sold out...especially the Palace games. Even against Cardiff there is only 100 tickets left
Its down the train track! What a great story...the power of football fans.
I didn’t even know palace vs Brighton was a rivalry 😂😂😂must be a huge game then
Alfie Cross pipe down "Alfie" you support Norwich
And that just shows off your shitty football knowledge
Joe G no one knows about this rivalry. Also wow, reply to a 3 month old coment👌🏻👌🏻
Alfie Cross who is your rivals again? And I'm pretty sure most proper football fans do know about it
Joe G I know that fucking girona vs Espanyol is a rivalry’s, so it’s not like I don’t know shit about football
