    Setting up my EQ Platform and I thought I’d make a video and bring y’all along, and hope someone gets something out of it.
    Please excuse my dirty socks in the video, the wind kicked up and my socks were the only thing I had out there to put over my microphone to keep the wind from killing the audio 🤣
    I bought my platform from Ed Jones after using mine for 2 seasons I highly recommend them. Here’s his website:

    This is an extremely helpful video. I've never seen an equitorial platform in action (or even set up!). I love the idea of the compas stand being only wood and glue. I've found that even my car nearby affects the compass readout.

    Thank you for the video. I am a very good woodworker and would like to make the platform. Is the design online?

      Yes sir,
      they have quite a bit of different designs on the web. If I was building one I'd go for an Ed Jones. He has plans on his website
      opticaleds.com/custom-made-equatorial-platforms/platforms/
      He also has a couple tutorials on RUclips how to make them

    Just bought my first platform few days ago. Looks very similar to yours. Having a hard time getting anything past 5 seconds without star trailing. Waiting on a illuminated reticle with drift method to see if that helps. I'm assuming fixed speed motors are reliable since I have the same.

      Do you have a link to the equatorial platform that you purchased?

      @@adventuresofanamateurastro804 No, I bought it local in St. Augustine from classified in Cloudy Nights.

      @@patindaytona the 2 motors on my platform do a very good job. When you bought your platform off cloudy nights was it fabricated for your specific latitude?

    • @patindaytona
      @patindaytona Год назад

      @@adventuresofanamateurastro804 Yes, but their is some room to adjust that latitude (10 degrees or so) and i adjusted it alot. Looking clear so far for tonight. Reticle will help alot!

      @@adventuresofanamateurastro804 Yes, had a range of latitude that mine easily fit into it. But i really adjusted it a huge amount because of the drift alignment for the eastern star tracking. All I can do is to get it to perform as opimally as it can. I know some tracking platforms use adjustable speed control. Looks like yours is fixed speed like mine is. Also heard of tracking error due to this. Spent about 4 hours past 3 nights trying for better accuracy. At least I know I'm understanding it better and better. I will get there!

    Does it have variable Speed control since planets move faster through the sky then stars do?

    • @stevec6977
      @stevec6977 Год назад

      NO, planets and stars move at the same speed.

      My platform motors are one speed all I have to do is plug it in and let it go. If I wanted I could put a switch to control the amount of volts going to the motors I could speed it up or slow it down if I wanted to. My platform only controls one motion which is called Declanation (Earth's motion) which means its one of the two angles that locate a point on the celestrial spear in the equatorial coordinate system, the other being hour angle. Declination's angle is measured north or south of the celestial equator, along the hour circle passing through the point in question. So if I wanted to take images of deep sky objects it had to be very short exposures because my platform does not control the right ascension (up and down) motion which is required for longer exposures for deep-sky objects DSO. Planetary imaging requires very fast exposure times so I have no need for right ascension.
      They do make platforms that are designed for DSO imaging that have both motions though. They are pretty expensive
