I'm a white student at a historically black college

  • Does "historically black" mean "exclusively black"? Founded after the Civil War to educate African-Americans who were largely barred from other colleges, financial pressures have led historically black colleges to adopt a new mission - diversify. Here's what it's like to be one of the 11% of students at HBCUs who are white.

    Okay is it just me or.... I'm white and I've never heard of the stereotype of all black schools being ghetto or rundown like ??? I've heard of extremely liberal but I don't think ghetto or run down...

      +anna james I've never heard of that stereotype once in my life either about HBCUs. I watched this one episode of Judge Mathis where this White girl was on there either being sued or doing the suing. She told Judge Mathis that she attends Spelman College or Morehouse, one of the two and he was shocked so he told her "ohhh really? That's a historically Black college" and the White girl responded with "yes...I know and it's also academically one of the top schools in the nation." I thought that was the best response because it shown that when she was applying to colleges/universities that she didn't care about being around predominantly White people but that she was going to receive the best education her money can afford. She said she absolutely love it there and wasn't treated any differently because of her race. She actually said the environment was much better, more fun, and much more peaceful there than it would have been in a predominantly White college.

    I was a white student at an HBC. It was a good experience, and my race was no big deal to the other students. But going to that college didn't really let me "see it from the other side" because in the larger world, I still didn't face the discrimination difficulties my classmates had always grappled with and likely always will. Being a minority on campus is not like being a minority in America.

    • @CaramelSwatches
      @CaramelSwatches 11 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you for saying this part. I really felt that was missing in the statement because from my perspective, Black and POC students and professors do not commit the kinds of microagressions and direct racism to white people that white people commit toward them, so if they feel like our experience is just being a minority, they are not understanding. Just having a feature that's different is not the issue. If I go into a space where everyone else has waist length hair and I have shoulder length hair, I might notice it, but I do not feel the risk of people antagonizing me or harming me over it. This is similar to the experience of a white person in a predominantly Black space. At most, they might experience some light teasing, often good natured or some uncomfortable, yet accurate, descriptions of history. That is not the same as the risks and traumas that Black and POC people face in white environments so I really wish they hadn't worded it as if the two were equal and am very glad that you lended your voice to saying as much.

    I'm from Europe, I've learned about USA school system through movies mainly and then other cultural supports but I've never heard of how your universities still have a kind of problem with diversity. I really think that the price of your education is encouraging the separation between your people. If education was accessible for everyone then a lot of problem would go. (For example I paid 130 euros for 1 year of a great university of Paris, the poorest people get paid to go.)

    • @PHlophe
      @PHlophe 6 лет назад +19

      i think you forget that there are similarities with the French Uni system. its not the end price of 1300 that determines whether you get a quality education or not. In Paris and across france , the elitist system means some uni are prized over others , and of course where they are located hardly any minority can afford a place to live there. the system is build in to filter oout poor people and since black people are at the bottom , the odd one makes it. its the truth.

    • @Ju-lj5ff
      @Ju-lj5ff 6 лет назад +15

      Lechiffresix six Do you live in Paris ? Every university is the same price, the poorest you are the less you pay (and you get money every months). The metro and RER system can get you everywhere (I live in the Western suburb so I kinda know), my university is in the 13th district (all the way across the city, far est, so I have to cross it in 40 minutes which is very good). A lot of my friends come from quite far (77, 93, 94 ...) outside Paris and most if them aren't privileged. I don't know what you are talking about there's a difference between university and "École" (school) which can be very expensive because they don't belong to the State. There are a lot of very good universities (under 300€ a year without a scholarship) as La Sorbonne, Paris Diderot, Descartes, Pierre et Marie Curie, la Catho...
      (ps: I paid 130 euros/year not 1300 euros)

    • @AM-re2bc

      Ju This is coming from a Hispanic person: it is set in such a way that it is easier for blacks to go to college. Asians have to score much much higher just to have the same chance as a black person who does average to get into certain colleges. There is also A LOT more financial help and otherwise for black students. There is a lot of diversity in most colleges in the US. Blacks, however, only makes 13% of the population. From that, a lot of blacks choose not to go to college or dropout in the first semester or year. Whites actually have the hardest time getting financial help to go to college. White are actually underrespresented at a lot of colleges (compared to population) Don't believe everything from a very liberal or very conservative source. They will always bring bias.

    • @Ju-lj5ff
      @Ju-lj5ff 6 лет назад +7

      A M Okey, I can understand now but the fact that people get into university based on their skin colour is something I can't even imagine. Where do you know the colour of the person who's applying ? Even if they want to be diverse this would be considered as discrimination in Europe and I guess a lot of countries across the world...

    • @kittylissiegirl9162
      @kittylissiegirl9162 6 лет назад +3

      +Ju On the application, they ask you your race. When you come in, they ask for ID or Driver's license from you or your parent, depending on how old you are when you enroll. They confirm your race or ethnic background some kind of way. They did this so they could investigate how discriminatory colleges were in the 1960s and 1970s, during the Civil Rights era and post-Civil Rights. It was to confirm suspicions of segregation. Eventually, though, it evolved into something that focuses on race and background.

    I am a graduate student at Florida A&M University, and was my top application, I was accepted to Drexel University but wanted to be connected to an HBCU for not only the education in class, but the education from being with people who looked like me. Both of my undergraduate degrees were from predominately White colleges and I always felt "disconnected" from my fellow students, but tried as hard to connect as I did in academics. I wanted to stop "trying" to fit in and just be a student. It is reflected in my GPA as well as my personal education. It brings me back to a place I feel most comfortable.

I too feel the same in terms of wanting to attend an HBCU for graduate school for more connection to my culture. The idea is exciting but daunting; as I would be an older student "going off to school" so tis speak. What method did you choose in picking the right school for your studies as well as your social and cultural needs and was there any hesitation? I have researched the idea and have had people tell me that the HBCU "experience is for undergrad and that I should choose larger more prestigious schools for grad school. What are your thoughts? If any. Thank you in advance for the advice.

      Interesting and congrats to you as well. I am an "older student" and I am 10-17 years older than some of my cohorts. So what drove me to FAMU was a program conducive to my professional life. That is one of my criteria, another was the faculty. Since I am close to age with many faculty, I wanted someone who would empathize with my experiences. The feel of the university also was factored in. Finally the most important the program you are interested in. How many Ph.D's are part of the faculty, who graduated from the school, how much is the tuition of course. Also the average time it takes for terminal degrees to be completed. I hope this helps and good luck Valerie, keep in touch.

    I'm from Baltimore MD, I went to a Catholic school on a scholarship. I was one of the very few white kids in my school and the only one in my glass up until the last 2 or so years (I'm also native but you can't see it lol). All of my friends we Latino or black. There were things that let me know that I was different like how my skin would change colors when you squeezed it or how red my face would get anytime I got even a little embarrassed. My Latina friends would call me "hairless cat" in spanish because I had no arm hair and they all did lmao. My dad's side of my family is pretty racist, I never understood why because none of my friends were white and they were all awesome. Luckily I was mostly raised with my mother and there are people of all races on that side of my family, I was raised to look at everyone as equals. When I left middle school and moved to the county, I went to a predominantly white school. I found the only black people in the cafeteria and asked if I could sit with them, because I was too afraid to approach any white girls that I didn't know, I didn't know how to talk to them lol . The only white teens other than family that I knew was from tv and movies and most of them were pretty bitchy. Looking back now it was pretty funny. What I'm trying to say, if anyone is even reading this, that I feel so incredibly lucky to not only have a beautiful big mixed family but to also had the rare opportunity to be a minority in a society where I am a majority. I got a small taste of what people of color live through everyday.

    The problem for me with non-Black students attending HBCUs is that they only go to HBCUs to get the benefits of a free tuition and to receive a full-ride scholarship, which is unfair to the majority of Black students who need it. Hence, non-Black students now become the "minority" group out of the rest of the majority Black students and those non-Black students reap the benefits from Black students who really need those scholarships and tuition waivers. Other than that, most non-Black students would not be attending an HBCU if they were not given a free tuition or scholarship or have a special title. I attended an HBCU and this what I observed as well as discussed with other like-minded students and professors.

I also went to Nichols State which was mostly white due to location reasons. When I moved to Texas I made sure I found a university that was diverse with all races. It was a nice change to see all races in one classroom and I made great friendships. I purposely become friends with others that are different than me. You get to see that you have more in common then you think.

    Historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are institutions of higher education in the United States that were established before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 with the intention of primarily serving the African-American community. This was because the overwhelming majority of predominantly white institutions of higher-learning disqualified African Americans from enrollment during segregation.[1][2] There are 101 HBCUs in the United States, including public and private institutions. This figure is down from the 121 institutions that existed during the 1930s.[3] Of these remaining HBCU institutions in the United States, 27 offer doctoral programs, 52 schools offer master's programs, 83 colleges offer bachelor's degree programs and 38 schools offer associate degrees.[4]

      If he started his own firm out of college then it's going to be small, with only a few employees. The fact that he didn't hire anyone black says very little in that context. When he builds it up to a company with 50+ employees and if by that time there is still no black employee, then come back and we'll talk.

      Soho Yankee, it's not an all-black school by choice, but by exclusion. However, 11% are white. If you look at the prestigious schools around the country, it's about the same for blacks. I just looked up Harvard, and they have 12% black enrollment. Why would a white person complain about HBCUs when they have unlimited choices?

    • @sohoyankee66
      @sohoyankee66 6 лет назад +3

      You too have unlimited choices. You won’t be denied admissions because of your skin color. It’s all about how comfortable you are around those not of your race. Welcome to our ever changing world. You have to converse and work with a diverse group of individuals. You may be the only one of your kind in a group. Been, there, done that. But let me ask, are there European-American orgs or frats at those schools? How would you feel if there was one? Every University I’ve researched has multiple African American,, Hispanic, Asian, Muslim, Jewish and Indian culture awareness and support groups well as fraternities. Euro-American ones aren’t allowed. Ever. That would be and considered a white supremacist group and racist. I once heard some speech that talk about wanted to judged by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin. Does that only work one way?

    I've attended both PWIs and an HBCU. I really liked my HBCU (Spelman College). It was a cool school filled with very posh black women, and I feel that it very much creates an aura of success and excellence in their young women. (It's an all women school, the sister school to Morehouse, which is all men.) I finished my undergrad at a PWI, and now am getting my master's at a PWI. I left Spelman only for personal issues, and I wanted to go back and finish there, but it was more important for me to graduate, in general. So, I went to a university closer to my hometown in North Carolina. (I'm only not saying the names of my two PWIs because anyone who knows me might recognize me by the story and I like being not recognized online.) I really liked that school, too. Here in grad school, I'm enjoying a diverse population, though it's also in a very diverse city. I think college can be what you make of it. What I've noticed with my HBCU and other HBCUs I've experienced either because of attending conferences there or knowing people who attended them, is that HBCUs tend to have a culture. Not necessarily black culture, but a culture specifically surrounding that particular HBCU. Spelman, for instance, has this feeling of creating women who are excellent in every way, from looks, to dress, to speech, to academics. Very much the idea of a black woman in a nice business suit with a string of pearls running for Senator. Wiley College, on the other hand, has this feel of a very Christian, wholesome black person with strong morals and family values. North Carolina Central has this feeling of a very metropolitan black person with sights on law and social justice. PWIs, on the other hand, don't feel so much like a singular culture of the type of citizen they're trying to create. At my undergraduate PWI, I felt like I just created a version of myself through the classes I took. In grad school, I feel like I'm using the tools given to further cultivate the type of person I want to be both in my work and my life. There's merit to both of them, but I gotta say, I do miss the culture of Spelman, and I really wish I would've spent all 4 years there and become a Spelman Woman.

    • @SunyiSideUp
      @SunyiSideUp 6 лет назад

      I should point out that I graduated Summa Cum Laude (3.9 GPA) at my PWI, and literally made all A's except one B which was in a physical class. So... there's no difference in the educational value at an HBCU (my PWI counselors were actually raving over me when I first transferred, because Spelman is such a hard school to get into and has such a small incoming class every year. They were amazed that I would leave Spelman and come there, and also expected great things from me because I had been a student at Spelman. And no, it wasn't a small PWI. It's one of the bigger North Carolina universities.) Also, the idea that black people get in college easier, because we're dumber or whatever, is obviously bunk. You don't earn your GPA because of "affirmative action." Grades are given based on the quality of your work. My work was obviously Summa Cum Laude quality.

    I don't know how I feel about this. I am all for diversity but when I saw that the valedictorian of an HBCU was a white guy, I couldn't help but feel some kind of way. Would he have been the valedictorian at a predominate white college? He looked so smudged and even the little bit of his speech felt slightly off. My thing is when you are a straight white male in this world, life is slightly easier for you and opportunities are easier for you (if you chose to take advantage of them) but black people (especially men) its not as easy for us in this world. HBCU were created because we couldn't attend white universities for most of the existence of what we know as the traditional university. Times have changed but these colleges now feel the need to cater (even when they say they aren't, they are behind the scenes) to white america for funding, so now these white kids are are coming to these HBCU's, outshining black students, getting scholarships and will eventually take over (very systemically of course). Most of these white kids already come to the University with an advantage. I don't know I'm kind of ranting, but again I do feel some kind of way, especially with that one white guy. He rubs me the wrong way. Maybe someone can help explain what I mean lol.

But you don't think he should feel that way because he had an easier journey to the school. But we don't know that. Everyone's journey in different, even two black male students can have drastically different journey's. People used the word smug to describe Obama during the beginning of his first term. He look like he felt like he belonged there. More so than many of the other presidents throughout history. Do you think Obama had to work harder than any other president in history to make it to the white house? Think about that for a minute.

    Open question. Is it safe to say that a percentage of hard working studious individuals and faculty, would find it ridiculous in the climate that exsists in the United States, that a white student at an overwhelmingly black college would be sitting at the head of his class, when the college was conceived to give exceptional black students a platform? If so, what is that percentage, and why do you think the college found it necessary to elevate this white student? I'm a white Canadian, and I'm interested in the perceptional differences between our two countries when it comes to the relations between races. Thank you.

    My son applied to, was accepted and attended a “black” college in Washington, D.C. he wanted to make a difference. His time there was miserable - the black students treated him horribly. We, his parents were so happy when he matriculated to a non-black college, went on to a prestigious law school and is very successful. Thank God he made the decision to leave!

    I HATE the fact that when mentioning the growing population of other races they spread the misconception that being latino is a race in of itself. THERE ARE BLACK LATINOS!!! Identifying as a latino isn't referring to a specific race but more of a unified cultural history and experience. Latinos comes in all races: we are black, white, indigenous, mulatos, mestizos, amerindian,..... This needs to get more attention than what it's getting.

    There was a black only fraternity on my campus. They said they were open to everyone, but they never elected to bring in white students in their history. There was also a "black men think seminar" which literally said "blacks only".... I'm an Australian and studied there in the US for a while, and I'm still baffled by all of that shit. I honestly looked around and asked others "is this not racist to you?", and most people just said it sounded like segregation, but also mentioned there was no use in speaking up as they'd be shut down by many of the liberal students for racism.
    One of the guys that joined my fraternity (I'm white by the way), was black. He was in my pledge class but half way through the semester had to leave because his parents didn't want him in a fraternity with white people. He actually told us that and left to join the black only fraternity. Either way, schools like the one on this video are fantastic. As long as organisations and people are inclusive, then I'm happy.

      Our social chair, brotherhood chair, and pledge class leader were black, one year prior our president was black. Three other guys in my pledge class were black and stayed, we had the most diverse group of guys, so don't tell me if my fraternity was exclusive or not. I don't care about all lives matter, I honestly don't care about a lot of that shit, my main concern is why other groups of students could form these clubs excluding other races from them, not just whites. Sounds like everybody's just going backwards. Have no idea why you're being such an aggressive shit though, I mean, looking at your channel, all you do is watch anime and play Final Fantasy, so I can see why you're being so boisterous now that you're behind a keyboard, superiority complex much?

    Such a good-looking white valedictorian at one of the best HBCUs in the country. This sounds like a white savior thing. We always applaud white people doing something easy - in his case, supposedly going out-of-the-box and attending an HBCU. Meanwhile, non-whites go through the worst crap their whole lives, and no one cares. How awful must it be that one of the few white students at Morehouse was valedictorian? And famous and beloved for it? It's like he's Oscar Schindler "saving" black people. By the way, there are a good number of Asians at HBCUs. A Cambodian American, Jivan Atman, went to Spelman and created the Blasian Narratives - documentary-theater project about Blasians.

    For 2 semesters I attended a “Black College” TSU in Nashville, TN. I got along with everybody until one of my professors let everybody in one of my classes know that I was attended on a minority scholarship. I am half Native American and half Greek/Irish but appear Caucasian. I was largely hated after that fact was singled out. It made it even worse because I was dating a few very gorgeous black women at the school. I eventually finished my classes and did not go back for another semester. After I was singled out it was one of the most racist situations I have ever been put through. I was treated with extreme prejudice. I only had about maybe 2 friends who would talk to me after that happened. I am sorry to say that racism is perpetuated in the fake news media to keep Americans “divided and conquered”. As long as we have unreasonable prejudices about each other we can never band together to fight the real enemy-our crooked government and the power that controls it-the Illuminati!!!

    I'm white and currently a high school sophomore. I live in a predominately black community and have almost always been the only white person in class. I want to go to a HBCU because of the history, culture and life lessons that I could learn that I haven't already.
    I also hate to admit that I'm actually kind of afraid to go to a PWI because I have never been around any more white people than my small family and I dont know what to expect. The only thing I know about white people is what's on the media and what my classmates/community members say (often racist things). I know that race shouldnt matter black, white, Asian etc. But sadly we are brainwashed to think so.
    All in all I dont know if I should go to an HBCU because I feel like my reasons are kind of mediocre and racially biased but I also feel like it would be an enriching experience in itself.

      A, only allowing black students to attend is segregation, which is illegal in this country.
      B, historically typically refers to the past. As in, in the past, it was a black school.
      C, white privilege is not a thing. Was it a thing in the 19th and 20th century, sure. But now the topic of "white privilege" is irrelevant and useless. If you want things to change, provide actual suggestions and options and listen instead of just screaming about an issue from two centuries ago.

    4:29 - For the same reason blacks go to former white majority colleges, they are closer, the most prestigious for their grades or offer the courses they want. Its not a conscious effort nor are minorities taking on undue burden, quite the opposite. Black people are the most subsidized demographic in America, throwing money at them is not a solution to lagging performance.

I also graduated from a high school that was 99% black yet a white girl left a private school to attend the high school. whites never had problems there, in fact they were on every team, participated in every activity possible and they had a very pleasant experience there. on classmates they still reminisce about the good times they had.

    It be hard to get into historically white college's unless you are dynamic, and even so your color is always in front of you with them, but at historically black colleges that we had to fend for ourselves to get because the whites didn't want us at there's, we become to accepting of white students who are just curious about black or just because they like black we let them in quicker than the white schools would, it's unfair that whites can come play in our back yards and be accepted and we can't or are limited in theirs.
