  • I love wolves, as little as I know about them. So I was naturally fascinated by the idea of the dire wolf, and quite delighted that Rebor has chosen to add one to their hopefully increasing line of non-dinosaurs. We saw how nicely Rebor handled mammals when we got the Smilodon, and having a feline from them, I was keen to get a canine to balance things out.
    In terms of sculpt and paint (at least for the Nord version), I’m very happy with it!

    Dang I was really looking forward to this one (particularly the more accurate Aenocyon variant), since I've been longing for years to one to my collection, but that paint app is a massive downgrade from the prototype pics. I don't remember this being an issue with recent Rebor products? Even the recently re-issued Woodland Stegosaurus I just my hands on recently is still just as beautiful from when it first released from the looks of it. Edit: The seam-lines on two of the included heads is also unfortunate and detracts from the sculpt's detail.

      Thanks for your comment. In fairness, lighting makes a difference, and also I have noticed sometimes that the very first models that come to hand actually are slightly poorer. Why that is I cannot say. My China friends have I daresay slightly better paint apps, but overall at least for what we have, it is a lot darker with less variation than in the paint master.
      You are right though. All the previous Rebor models I have have all had paint applications that were slightly less than, if not equal in quality to the paint master. I do hope I am really unluck though. Again I'm just _one_ review. I'm waiting to see others to see what colours they get. If they get better ones actually close to the paint master, I may take a risk and order again, at least the Plain version.

      Its weird cause the smilodon is beautiful
      And the wip for the dire wolf looked great at every stage

    I was hoping the brown version to be more orange like a maned wolf but it looks cool anyway, it would be great if rebor keeps releasing pleistocene south american mammals like arctotherium or some ground sloth. Great review.

    Even though the color scheme differs from the original images, I still love that low-roar version. And someday I will have this because I freaking love dire wolves. Rebor Smilodon and this Rebor dire wolf would make an amazing diorama, just like in that 'Star Ace' figure line. (I'm sure you saw that.) I loved this review, my dear sir. and I'm so excited for the next video. 🖤

      Sorry for the late reply; I am way behind! Well the thing is, I think that perhaps my own colours were not as good. I have seen other reviewers have nicer colours. Also to be fair, my dynamic range isn't the best. But in my hand, it definitely has shortfalls compared to the release images.
      There are more reviews to come! Although judging from the negativity I've received, I will probably steer clear of Rebor for a long time lol!

    The "Nordic" skin might not be complete speculation, as we have found Dire Wolf remains in China, so there must have been a cold-adapted ghost population that crossed Beringia to reach Asia.

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  4 месяца назад +1

      It could very well be! At the very least, colours for prehistoric mammals have a very good chance of reflecting mammals we have today. Thanks for the info, I was not aware about the Chinese finds!

    I was not expecting the shout out! Thank you! 💖
    These two look very nice! The eyes are very nice despite the slightly wonky pupil placement, I do agree that the seams on the open mouth variants could've been done better though.
    I see that Rebor has improved their leg anatomy too, though they still gave the Dires slopped backs which they didn't have. Typically mammals have straight backs, with a few exceptions here and there like hyenas. It's especially odd as, as you pointed out they seemed to be doing a dire who's a bit more on the lean side but still gave it massive shoulder and neck muscles. In reality these muscles would be wasted away a bit just like the back half of the animal.
    I do enjoy the beard though on the Nordic one, certainly a fun take XD
    Also, fun fact! Dire wolves recently (2021) were found to not have been wolves at all! Recent DNA findings found that they were actually in their own genus, completely separate from modern canids despite how similar their skeletal anatomy is to modern wolves. This of course opens the door to lots of speculation as to what they really looked like in the flesh. For all we know as of right now, Dires may have looked much more distinct than previously believed.

      Thanks for your insight as always! Yes in fact I have that 2021 paper, but felt that even if I could share that in a science part of the video, my actual _base knowledge_ of mammals is so low that I would be presenting on very weak foundations. Classification and phylogeny and cladistics are fascinating though!
      Very good catch on muscle atrophy! I didn't actually notice the backs were sloped, assuming muscle bulk in the traps and neck areas. But just as we take fat from all over when we burn it and can't spot reduce (damn it 😔), there is no reason for muscular atrophy to be selective to just the waist and not everywhere else.

      @@DinosDragons You're welcome :)
      And that's fair.
      Yeah, the current body build works for the fantasy model as giant shoulder and neck muscles with a smaller waist and hunched back is a trope in animated and fantasy creatures, but for the more realistic one they could've done the slight anatomy edits... Though that could potentially sacrifice the chimeric head swapping "feature" :P
      I'd also like to add that I do like the attention to detail with the facial muscles in the 3 heads. You can really see the muscles all tensed up to create the snarl and lift the lips to show the teeth in the two open mouths, while the facial muscles are relaxed in the closed mouth ones.

  • @TITANSofTheEARTH
    @TITANSofTheEARTH 6 месяцев назад +2

    In the beginning I allready thought - ok the head an teeth detail is not so good.
    And then when you compare the smilodon head and we can see that even the small teeth are made of the better material...it´s really sad that Rebor saved here a few $ on the wrong end.
    Nevertheless it makes a great diorama putting one smilo with a corpse and two or 3 wolves on a selfmade rock.
    The closed mouth head looks much better because of the lower quality teeth. But then again the JXK wolf has a much more realistic looking head /eyes.
    And the i googeled the TIBETAN WOLF Wolf by JXK Studios...with open mouth and it also looks much more realistic.
    His teeth are also not so detailed, but the overall facial expression is 100% natural.
    So in the end I would pair Smilo with the JXK wolves.
    Sorry I am the allways complaining aunt^^
    But it is as it is.
    Like PNSO very very strong fluctuations in product quality from figure too figure.
    Rebor Kiss is a completely different level in terms of material, print detail and painting...but not a big difference in price.
    Strange.

      Thank you for your detailed thoughts! Well I do hope it is just mine, and of course lighting plays a huge part as well. I _have_ noticed however, that sometimes the super early runs are actually not as well painted, and I hope that is the case here.
      The JXK really _is_ something, but the Mr Z surprised me as well. JXK seems to be the more popular brand in China, but I actually prefer the Mr Z here.
      Look forward to your next review!

      I would that at least for this one I have, that's true, which is surprising. Lighting obviously makes a difference, and but this does seem a bit further from the paint master from all the other Rebors I have compared to _their_ release images.

    This is one of a very few if not the only time where i think i prefer something over a more natural or accurate figure lol. There's something i find about the Fantasy version very appealing
    But, both are still decent figures, shame about the paint apps though.

      @DinosDragons  5 месяцев назад

      Well in fairness, it might be possible that I was a little unlucky, and also lighting makes a big difference. I have to say that while I really preferred the natural look at first, in terms of paint apps the fantasy one is really good.

    Im only a bit dissapointed on the plain version because early with the concept art the surrounding color of the eyes was black, more so to my liking but on the final product it's white (with small black mark under it) and not a big fan of that.

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  5 месяцев назад

      In fairness, the lighting of the studio makes a difference. I've noticed I need to have different set ups to try to get close to the release images. I do hope that i'm just unlucky though. I have noticed sometimes, the very very earliest ones we get in China are slightly worse than the next ones that comes out in the more general worldwide wave, so who knows what goes on there. I suggest waiting to see what the next reviews show. I actually like the plain so much that if subsequent reviews show better colours, I will try to sell this one and buy another one.

    Totally called it on Rebor screwing up: hideous seems , terrible paint quality ( especially when compared to promo images), misprinted eyes , shriveled up waist, inaccurate hunchback. People,save your money and wait for a proper Dire Wolf from an actual good company who aren't run by terrible people.

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  5 месяцев назад +1

      I respect that we all have our opinions and we like what we like, and we don't ilke what we don't like. However it is unfair to make _ad hominem_ statements on people behind any company when one can have no personal knowledge of their character, terrible or not. I like to believe that most people are all like you and me, trying their best to live and let live.
      I should also emphasize that I hope that the paint application could just be on mine. I have experienced a few times when I have received a very early production model and my friend who received the next run had even better apps.
