My family is from Shetland, but I've been obsessed with all things Scotland for a long time. I'm glad I didn't see the usual Outlander list in your pile, LOL. While they're good, it's always the go-to and I knew you'd have something I hadn't heard of before. While You Sleep by Stephanie Merrit is another I want to get my hands on and it is, as well, set on a Scottish Island. Have you read Ann Cleeve's Shetland mystery series? They're interesting as well and atmospheric. Sacrifice by Sharon Bolton is a creepy if not full-on whacko story on the Scottish Isles and the Peter May Lewis Man series is nice as well if you like slow burn kind of books. He also has a gorgeous photography book all on the Hebrides. I could talk about books forever, so I won't bore you any more. I'm off to go purchase a couple of your suggestions!

I’d love to visit Shetland, have you been?
I was actually looking at the Ann Cleeves Shetland series the other day and I ended up being distracted by someone in the shop getting upset about something to do with an otter... you can’t make this stuff up haha.
I’ve wanted to read the Lewis Man series too. Thank you for the recommendations, going to pick some up now and you definitely don’t bore me! I love book chat!

I’ve still not read it but it’s about two down on my reading pile and I can’t wait. I’m currently reading ‘The Familiars’ and it’s fantastic ☺️

I would love to visit Scotland someday! I guess for now I will have to just read about it. Coincidently, I just finished a book that is set in Scottish Highlands and I think you might like it. It is "The Missing Years" by Lexie Elliott. It is the kind of book that leaves you wondering if it is a physiological thiller or a supernatural ghost story. You should check it out! I highly recommend it! I really enjoyed it's audiobook as well!

Ooh thank you for the recommendation, I’ll have to look it up, I do love books set in the highlands, I go there quite a bit so it’s nice to have books set there while I’m up there.
I hope you do get to visit one day ☺️

Hi Rosy. I've just subscribed to your Channel. You collected a stack of books with a Scottish setting and I like your idea very much because I'm looking for novels which have in common some interesting variations on the same central theme. I wish you could help me find at least a few books having most of the peculiar features that fascinate me. I like reading novels (thrillers, science/ crime fiction) especially those written by contemporary British authors. I love British English and I am always looking for realistic stories/series which take place in today's Britain (without witches, wizards, warlocks, vampires, werewolves, dragons or other fantastic creatures). I am fond of British real-life characters who speaks proper English (not dialect or slang). I am keen on beautifully written books but slow, stodgy, uneventful sagas aren't really my cup of tea. It is an amazing experience following the gripping adventures of my favourite characters throughout several volumes. Characters must be interesting and not too many. Unfortunately, it is not so easy to detect from the back cover the nationality of an author and figure out whether he or she writes in British English. This precious piece of knowledge (regarding the writer's origins and language) is too often left out as it were a trivial detail. Believe me, it isn't. So please, from now onwards, don't forget to mention such a relevant piece of information. I hope I gave you materials you can use for making new videos. I am sure you can help me find what I am desperately looking for. Can you recommend any books/authors to me? Or any videos in which you carry out a review of books that might be of interest to me? It would be very nice of you and I'd appreciate it very much.
    Thank you.

      Hello,
Thank you for the follow ☺️. I also like thrillers set in modern Britain and one of the best crime thriller series’ I’ve read set in the UK are the works of Rachel Abbott but they’re definitely written in a more colloquial way as tends to be the norm within crime thrillers because it fits the genre better.
For beautifully written piece of fiction, I would definitely try more contemporary fiction as there seems to be a lot more emphasis on the art of the written word within that genre.
Regarding your pointers on the nationality of the author, that isn’t really something I’d be interested in including as it’s not my style, I really appreciate writers of all nationalities and backgrounds and there’s some excellent works to be discovered by stepping out of the ‘British’ genre ☺️

Thank you for your precious suggestions.
I am afraid I was misunderstood. It is perfectly right to read books written by authors from other nationalities. Meanwhile, as you review a book, you can say that its author Is or Is not British. That's all. Of course you are free to act as you like. It Is clear that you are not interested in nationality but we are all different and we read books for different reasons. For a foreign English student who wants to learn British English (the British culture and landscape) the author's nationality is an important piece of information.

Generally speaking, if a book is set in the U.K., it usually is written by a U.K. author as US authors tend to write about America. There are exceptions of course.

Unfortuately, there are too many exceptions and I can't take such an unreliable pointer on trust.
