One thing that never failed to amaze me about Continental tires that I installed on my customers cars back in the late 1970's, the 1980's, and the early 1990's was how "in balance" Continental tires were upon installation. Line up the orange or red dot on the sidewall of the tire with the valve stem on the alloy wheel and 9 out 10 didn't need any balance weights when put on the wheel balancing machine! The first few times I saw that I broke the tire down and slid the "dot" to opposite the valve stem and sure enough it need some weight to be brought into balance; but only like 1/4 to 1/2 oz. Where the Goodyear, Firestone, and all others needed a couple of oz minimum to be "in balance". And the few Continentals that might have needed a weight, it was always just one; never multiple weights at multiple positions on the inside and outside of the wheel to achieve balance. And in those years Continental was about all I ever sold, as long as my customer could afford a top level tire. And I did try the first few China made tire brands that made it to the USA in the early 80's to try to satisfy my few customers who wanted cheap rubber, but it wasn't worth the aggravation of dissatisfied customers and time expended "hammering on" 3 or 4 wheel weights and then a month later having the car return with a shake because the tires I had just installed went out of balance in the first 1000 miles after installation. Hey, the tire sales were a small part of my Asian-manufacturer specialty automotive repair shop, a couple of cars a month for 4 new tires and that's about it. And I installed them myself, having started out "spinning wrenches and busting tires" (and pumping gas in the pre- self-serv days) in a real service station; experience that few automotive technicians ever obtained. And no, I never hired any one that worked for a Goodyear, a Firestone, or a Sears store as I was biased against kids who started out in that type of operation; too many bad habits to try to fix, Ionly hired ex-dealer or techs from other independent shops, or right out of tech school (Lincoln Tech mostly).
And other than my two 4x4's which got Goodyears, all I ever installed on my own cars were Continental tires. But I couldn't make them last on my AE86, that 4A-GE burned thru rear tires in 12,000 miles due to breaking the rear tires loose at 7500 rpm when I would got into 2nd gear. LOL But on my '84 Cressida I got over 100,000 miles on a set of Continentals; open differential, automatic transmission, and not enough power to break them loose in the dry.

Interesting... you sold Continental tires in the 1970s and 1980s? The best info I can find is that Continental tires weren't in the USA until after 1987 -- when Continental AG (a German Company) acquired General Tire. Just sayin'.

Continental also makes the interior for many manufacturers like Ford, Chrysler, Honda, bmw, Tesla and others. They also make pool liners, vinyl material for seats at places like McDonald's, vinyl flooring, vinyl windows for boats and convertibles, medical blood bags, and a ton more. I've been using Continental tires on my Merceeds and Subaru cars for years. They are very good performance and kind of mid-priced - not the cheapest but not too expensive. Great for the money for sure - they are premium tires. When I rode motorcycles I went with Continental sport touring tires often - they were much less expensive than the competition but just as good, they offered amazing value.

It felt like on high speed I was going down a water slide. It never drove that way with any other tire. The grip is immense and the way it corners is astonishing. They are priced superbly for what you buy. Not cheap but not over priced. It feels good buying this tire because you know you are buying a quality product which will always have your back.

@Robert Glover Hi. You wrote this comment 3 years ago. Are you still very positive on the Continental TrueContact TOUR tires? Do you still highly recommend them? These tires seem to have great reviews in all weather too! Great in dry, rain, and snow. Great traction, and great stopping (braking) power. Long life as well. From your experience, so you agree to ALL of this, or not? What are your thoughts now after 3 years? You still have these tires on your automobile?
I was undecided in choosing these tires or the Michelin CrossClimate2 tires. They too are highly rated. Ultimately I chose the Continental which I have in order. I hope I made the right decision? Thank you.

Most of the Mercedes Benz cars I’ve owned have had either Continentals or Michelins as OEM. I had one that had Pirelli PZeros and I hated them. Noisy, rough ride ETC. When they wore out (in 20,000 miles!) i replaced them with Continental Conti Pro Contacts and it rode as smooth as silk with little road noise. My current car (2019 Mercedes E300 4matic) came with Pirelli Cinturato P7 run flats and they're terrible. Not only extremely loud but rough riding AND I dont know if its because they’re run flats with the hard sidewalls but hard turns feel like there’s a bulge in the front tires. I took it to the Mercedes dealer and was told “nope, there’s nothing wrong with the car. Its the tires”. I cant wait until the tires either wear out or age out to put Continentals on it! And no more of the run flat nonsense!

I love their tire's and also had a pair of adidas all terrain sneakers with their sole that lasted for years and were washed many many times.

Clearly the DWS06 is the most popular Continental, is it a good tire for stretching?
I watched the spotlight video you guys did on it and you showed the sidewall flex... Looked kinda thin TBH lol

I just got falkens on my 2012 civic, because discount tire didn’t have the continentals in stock...fast forward two weeks, I have worse gas mileage and a bubble on one of the falkens after hitting a pothole, The pro contacts I had before had hit many potholes with 0 issues lol. Luckily they’re letting me trade these for continental pro contacts too, will just pay the difference.

Continental did some Whitewall tires in 1984 or 1985......pretty cool in 205-50-15.
The whitewall were at least 30mm high and have a black lettering in it.
Looking cool, but weren't produced since them.

Well, in Europe at least Continental is considered THE tire. We here do not take anything outside of Continental, Good Year/Dunlop, Michelin, and Pirelli to be a premium tire. Yokohama? Mediocre. Toyo? Terrible results when tested, usually doesn't make it past the safety test for wet breaking. A budget solution for the euro scene as well. And oh boy, Nankang... It is a fun perspective, to observe the daily struggles of the US car community I must say. Is it possible that you might have missed as well, one of THE wheel companies - Borbet?

So, I have a mk7 golf r. I plan on installing the 034 Motorsport lowering springs soon with some new wheels and tires for summer. My question is what tire? I’m lookin at the continental contact sports or the Michelin pilot sport 4S’s. There’s about a 200 dollar difference for my size of 235/35/19. I will hardly ever go to a track, drag strip sometimes but mostly city and highway driving.........

My car is at Mavis Tire right now to be fitted with 245/45/18 Pure Contact LS tires on my 2015 Hyundai Genesis Sedan 3.8 HTrac. Had Michelin MXV4 and they were okay but not great. Even Consumer Reports lists this or par or even better than Michelin Premier A/S.

    • @tullious01
      @tullious01 5 лет назад

My initial comments with the first drive was it helped absorb nmuch. much better the often harness over rougher roads from the Michelin MXV4 tires I replaced. The Michelins also experienced vibrations transmitting through the steering wheel. I want to note that the previous tires were not worn out but had probably a good 10,000 miles left but I was done. Glad I made the move.

I just bought a set of 4 CrossContact ATR's on ebay for $335 usd. Nice price! I'm hoping for the best because I didn't want to spend alot. I'm putting them on my 21 yr. old AWD Chevy Astro that gets alot of miles on gravel and dirt roads. I noticed on the sidewalls they're marked made in South Africa ?! I had no idea tires were made there. Anyway, there are lots of good reviews so I'm hoping they're not junk 🤨
