    *FAQs related to this video will appear in this pinned comment...*
    *'Plant butter? Isn't that just margarine?'* - yes, but also no. This Flora 'plant butter' product has been formulated to have handling properties very similar to dairy butter - and has some sort of cultured legume ingredient that gives it a pretty convincing 'buttery' taste. I like real butter, but I rate this product quite highly.
    *'You forgot the chilli Marmite'* - I didn't forget it - I couldn't find any.

    American here in Virginia...I recently watched this video and was very intrigued about the dreaded Marmite...I've seen reaction videos of Americans taking huge spoonfuls of the stuff and completely gagging. Now I was brought up in a family where you eat what you are served and no complaining allowed. It helped me to love all kinds of different foods.
    So after watching this video, I decided I'd like to try Marmite, the proper way of course. Ordered some on Amazon, toasted my bread, buttered it and put a very thin serving of Marmite on. It is delicious! Currently sitting with a cup of coffee and an English Muffin with some Marmite. Can't wait to try it in a grilled cheese as some have suggested!

      It's also good spread thin on buttered bread, and then you put hard cheese - Cheddar, Red Leicester, Ossau-Iraty, etc. on top, and make into a sandwich. No other filling, just cheese and Marmite. If your cheese isn't very strong, the Marmite gives it a good kick. If it is strong cheese, then it can be incredibly good.

    I would say the flavour of Marmite is heavily umami. Marmite XO is how Marmite used to be. It was reformulated and made weaker and runnier. My husband's from Burton upon Trent where Marmite's made and I'm from near there. So we both grew up with Marmite as part of our diet.
    Edit.
    I suspect Marmite wasn't originally made with oats and rye. It reflects a change in what's brewed. I think they had to start importing used brewing yeast from other countries, but that might have changed now. Celery never used to be listed in the ingredients. I notice Vegemite didn't have B12 added so vegans may want to use a different product if they're partially relying on yeast extract for B12.

      There is no hop taste. It's v. salty with funky notes as you might get in soy sauce or miso paste, demi-glace, Worcestershire sauce, or a very well-aged Cheddar. My first experience of it was a tiny scraping of it on toast with plenty of butter and it sold me immediately that this was good stuff.

    Country Crock makes a "plant butter" in the US, but it comes in Olive Oil, Almond, Avacado... so you can choose a bit of the flavor profile. The neat thing about them all is they cook precisely like butter, can even make finely ground short-bread, but they all melt at a much lower temperature than butter. You don't actually have to melt them half the time, simply use a strong whisk and they beat into a liquid state. They do all pick up the flavor of spices much better and do great at cooking steak, sausage, fish and some shellfish. Chicken doesn't seem to care at all.

    • @tiredoftheliesalready
      @tiredoftheliesalready 3 года назад +4

      @@fmlAllthetime You can't even be so sure about "raw ingredients you cook with." Sure, some things are locally sourced by some stores, but many fruits and a decent amount of vegetables are still provided by mega-corporations. That is the US I'm talking about, but it is likely the case for a decent amount of other countries as well.
      The reality is that "locally grown" produce is not as easy to find anymore for many regions in the US and some more "modernized" nations, as there are fewer and fewer farmers that aren't working for the corporations. You can live right next to a farm and never get a single piece of food from them locally. Add that to the produce companies, such as Dole, and there is still a decent change your "fresh" ingredients were sourced from a large supplier, not a farm 50 miles away; it is also likely that some of them are far from fresh, and were preserved through chemicals and environmental controls.
      The easiest way to tell what supplier your local store might be using it to look at what should be "out of season" against what is on the shelves...if you're getting near-perfect looking fruits and vegetables that do not grow in your region at that time of year, it is likely a large business that is providing them.
      Or...you could buy them at a local farmer's market...if you are lucky enough to have one around you. That is one of the only real ways to know you're getting "locally sourced" ingredients in the US.

    • @tiredoftheliesalready
      @tiredoftheliesalready 3 года назад +1

      @@sofa-lofa4241 I would agree with that sentiment, but thankfully, it is not always the case. Small communities and/or having local farmers you know/get to know help to mitigate that.
      There's sadly a decent number of local farmers who want to sell things locally, but do not have a market without driving hours to sell in other communities. I knew some farmers that had to drive almost 3 hours every Sat/Sun to sell their goods.
      Here is hoping people learn to start relying more on local growers. I noticed that eating locally-grown (sometimes "organic") food and meats resulted in my needing to eat far less food than buying the same products in the same quantities from the supermarket. As a point, we bought some locally-grown meats made into sausages late last week, and could only eat about 1.5 links with some vegetables before we were full, compared to our normal 2-3 links each (along with vegetables).

      I have some Bovril in the cupboard, what should I use it with? Any recommendations for toast?

      @@druze3210 I've switched from marmite to Bovril for my toast, i find it has a more meaty Unami flavor as Atomic Shrimp describes. I butter my toast and pop it under the grill to get the butter nice and golden, then a scattered spread of Bovril, making sure it doesnt cover all the butter because its nice to have variation! Its not as strong as marmite but too much will still be overpowering. If you don't like it on toast, I find bovril makes a better stock than marmite and you can also use a teaspoon in hot water for a nice winter meaty drink

    I’ve been eating Marmite since I was a toddler ( late 60’) It’s The perfect jar of umami.

    Top tip: if the lid on your jar of Marmite gets gummed up, as it inevitably will at some point, you can run it under hot water for about 30 seconds or put it in the microwave for 5-10 seconds and it should release quite easily.
