  • Are rifles like the Savage Rascal single-shot .22 long rifle viable for hunting? I took this rifle out and tested it at the range, then during a hunt for ground squirrel here in SW Idaho. I give my thoughts on this rifle, as well as some ideas to make it more accurate for ethical shots.

good vid Eric. my daughter's rascal also had some light strikes. savage fixed it no questions asked. she killed quite a few silhouettes and even a few squeaks with it using iron sights and federal golden bullets before graduating to a 10/22. I liked the simplicity and safety of the rifle and she actually preferred the iron sights. all in all our experience with the rifle was positive. i have two other savages in centerfire calibers that are bone stock and crazy accurate. I would buy another savage in a heartbeat.

You are the third person to mention the light strikes. I will be sending this one back to Savage, so when it is given away, the new owner doesn't have the issues. I am glad to hear that your daughter and you both liked it. If she was good with the iron sights, then that is definitely a plus! I do recommend it, as I think it's a great little rifle and I've heard from a lot of folks like you who back that up with their own experiences! Thanks for the info and comment!

Eric, you absolutely need to increase the volume on your videos.

I've never been asked to do that before. I try to level all the volumes in the video to match, but I haven't heard that before. When I listen to them, I leave the RUclips volume at 50% and on my computer at 60%.

Anyone else who gets one of these the firing pin may be to wide. That is why the misfires take place. Savage will repair at no cost, I sent both of my boys bolts back for reshaping of the firing pin. Misfires on a gun designed for kids due to a faulty firing pin is a recipe for disaster.
I did find that if you had a light strike/misfire simply recocking the bolt and pulling the trigger a second time will result in the cartridge firing. Obviously not ideal.

The 'new' Redrider lever action BB guns are awesome! I am so impressed with it! It is all about trigger control, it will shoot touching groups@ 20feet, if you can do your part! great tool!
Now that I stocked up on CCI Copper 22lr, & some other lead free ammo , I need to test it... 😨💵💵💵

It's a Weaver 2-7 that I bought in the 1990s. I do not know if they sell them any more. If they do, it's a great little scope!

Hello, what type of ring scope you put to hold this scope? I bought the Bushnell Banner and I can't find a ring that fits the Savage Rascal 22
