    Kershaw’s shoulder was falling off at the end of 2023. His FB velocity was down to 88 mph. He had surgery right after. Why is Chris talking like it’s a huge mystery why Kershaw had a bad NLDS? 12:00

    You're underplaying how much Kershaw has pitched injured in October. He got shoulder surgery just a few weeks after that meltdown start last year. It's not every year or start of course, but health has been a significant factor in his October stats, if you read The Last of His Kind by Andy McCullough

    clayton kershaw has his october demons, but he’s also probably the final nail in the coffin for the old school manager “i keep my starter in” guys. So many postseason starts where Kershaw gave you 6 quality innings (which would be more than incredible nowadays) but mattingku would send him back out, on short rest, at crazy high pitch counts. Saw one stat from 2014 that if he got pulled in the 6th inning against the cardinals he’d have given up 2 runs in 12 innings, instead he gave up 11 in 12.2

    • @jonathanemontgomery

      @@kalluey absolutely. If he gets pulled after 6 tough IP in a lot of these starts, the narrative would be way different.

    Kershaw’s shoulder hasn’t been healthy in six years; that’s a huge reason behind his postseason struggles. Previous to that, he often had good starts that were turned into bad starts because Mattingly or Roberts put him into impossible situations.

    Kershaw's K rate has been pretty much the same for the past 6 years -- over a K per inning. That matches his K-rate from the FIRST 6 years of his career. Coming back from surgery this year he was also right around a K per inning, until the last start. He's had ONE start where he didn't strike out a lot.
    The reason he's a 5 or 6 strikeout-per-game guy now is because he's a 5 or 6 inning pitcher now. The limitation isn't his K-rate, it's his inability to go deep into games anymore.

  • @realbkrick
    @realbkrick 2 месяца назад +2

    A lot of Kershaw's postseason numbers are inflated by a horrible bullpen and mismanagement by Don Mattingly. Not to mention, 2017 Astros cheated completely shut them down game 1 at Dodger Stadium, and he got blown up in game 5 in Houston....

  • @ShelleyPolarbelle
    @ShelleyPolarbelle 2 месяца назад +2

    What do Kersh’s post season stats look like if you toss out 2017? Let’s face it, everyone had a complex over it but the Houston team knew what pitches were coming. The cheating made it awful for Kersh and that’s where the postseason complex comes from. I mean, it’s just not fair to Kersh to wrap 2017 cheater stats in with his other years

    Clayton is one of the greatest pictures in baseball history, and there's really no question about that. And I knew he would not retire after last year's playoff performance. There's no way in hell he was going to end his career like that. He basically had no shoulder left his fastball was in the mid-80s. But the Dodgers rotation was so depleted that he went out there anyways with a destroyed shoulder and gave it all he had.

    kershaw has struggled in the postseason at times, there is no doubting that. but to say “he has not had SUCCESS in the postseason, bottom line” is so far from the truth. he’s thrown some absolute gems in the postseason and you can’t just ignore those starts. he was spectacular in 2020, just to bring up one year. no one ever brings up his gems but only ever wants to talk about his blowups. it’s beyond ridiculous.
    and i know it doesn’t work this way, but if mattingly hadn’t hung him out to dry by letting him go into the 7th when he was well past 100 pitches, or fast approaching 100 pitches, and instead pulled him after 6, we’d all be singing a different tune. bc he’s had some gems turned into clunkers *real* quick.

    Kersh needs to be better at protecting his legacy. Be more like Scherzer and not put yourself in situations where you would fail. But he shoulders (no pun intended) the responsibility of the whole team year after year (over usage, injury). Last year he threw with a bum shoulder. Why put yourself in that position? Dodgers were screwed with the rookies and Lance Lynn. We weren’t gonna get out of the NLDS with that crew. Kersh should not have been trotting out there thinking he had to sacrifice for the team.

    Saying that he hasn't had success in October is not really true. He has certainly had bad October performances, but he has had very successful October outings too. I don't think labeling him as unsuccessful in October is a fair characterization. He's been terrible at times, and he's been excellent at others.

    “He has not had success in the postseason, bottom line.” That is objectively not true, and that unintentionally exemplifies what the question is getting at better than the intentional answers. Kershaw absolutely has had a lot of success in those 194 innings of postseason pitching, but he’s failed at a way higher rate than in the regular season, and all that so many people remember are the failures.

    Why is kershaw the only great SP who’s postseason track record get talked about the way that it does, he seems to be the only dude with the “but what about October” caveat. No one discusses verlander’e paltry postseason and World Series stats or Greg maddux being a playoff vanishing act despite his regular season dominance. I hate the double standard
