Lemmy's original is chilling to listen to. But this Sabaton Tribute to the song and artist/s is haunting and hits deep with the visuals. I've watched it so many times now and each time is sad. And the message that all wars are the same for the soldiers. Doesn't matter where you come from or what war you fought. I enjoy watching your reactions. Honest emotions coming through.
Lemmy's version captured the perspective of those that fell. This captures the perspective of us that didn't forget. And that's important too. And they remember Lemmy too. Props to Sabaton for this very different take on a classic!
Never apologize for having feelings, my friend. Im 6'3, 275 lbs retired US Army paratrooper, been there done that, got the T shirt, seen it 1st hand. And the video gets me every time I see it. Also if you watch it again, everything you see is has a nod to something, the opening sound and them by the bus, sounds just like the opening to " Bismark" to me, the planes and "No bullets fly", the female solder and "Night witches" etc... all the various soldiers are represented throughout time. Love you two. Keep it up.
A tremendous tribute to Lemmy and all the soldiers who march off to fight, and die, for their homeland. Props to Sabaton for including the remaining members of Motorhead in the video. Great reaction, stay safe, keep rocking.
On top of everything else, this masterpiece ends with another heartbreakingly beautiful cello/violin composition by Tina Guo. Sabaton took the original and while showing respect to the original Motorhead, elevated this piece as only they can.
There are so many Easter eggs in this video. References to characters and events in other Sabaton songs. And the bus, Hammersmith 82. Also a Motörhead reference.
My reaction was the same as yours. In fact, it still is. Lemmy made an epic song, and Sabaton did it justice. I also love them for all the references they made to Lemmy and Motorhead. The bus, flag, and bandmembers carrying his photo.
In my opinion, both songs are beautiful in different but equal ways. Lemmy's "1916" is a funeral march, expressing the deep sadness that this man-made tragedy created. Sabaton's "1916" is a protest march, expressing anger (which, I think, becomes clear when his voice grows stronger, almost belching the lyrics, instead of quiet and sad when the young soldiers die) over the pain and injustice that the victims weren't given the time to feel. Both are equally important and justified feelings and I think it's wonderful that now two songs exist that do them justice.
The two guys standing in the door opening at 5:53 are Mikkey Dee and Phil Campbell, the drummer and the guitarists of Motörhead. The picture they are carrying is of Lemmy Kilmister, the bassist, and singer of Motörhead.

We love You - I Love You. I cry to this every time I listen and see this video. No words needed. ❤
Lemmon wrote “1916” after watching a documentary on the Battle of the Somme. It made him sad and intensely angry that so many young men died for just a few miles of ground while old men sat back in safety and got medals. The horror of the “Battle” was not just that it took so many lives so quickly, 19,000 Englishmen died in three hours, or that it wiped out the entire male population of some English towns, but that it went on for five more months. And the War itself last four years. All because a member of the Austrian nobility was shot. The young men who went to fight the war to end all wars, and grew up while fighting the first modern war in the horror of the trenches, were called the Lost Generation. All told, 70 million fought, 8.5 million died, and 21 million were wounded. No wonder Lemmy sounds as if his heart is breaking. Thank you for your reactions. You actually speak about the artists, the songs, and how they make you feel. You’re not afraid to look vulnerable. At least you don’t edit out the tears or the times words don’t come easily. You’re an absolutely lovely couple and you’ve become my favorite reactors. You’ve earned my subscription. Dziękuję!
For me this song brings up the Panic and anguish when I heard my daughter was being emergency airlifted with a serious wound to her neck from Afghanistan in 2011. She was spared by as the shrapnel from an IED missed her corraded artery by a millimeter. I remember my Dad dying from complications caused by "An unknown phatagin" he was exposed to in Vietnam that the Government lied to us and our Vets about until the last ones infected where gone then they admitted it was Asian orange. I remember stories of my grandfather's suffering from PTSD and the stories of their fathers suffering as well. One can only hope that one day solders will finely get sick of cowards sending them to fight and will say no.
I will say this Motorhead version was awesome but I can't think of a best band to make a cover of their song then Sabaton and enhance it with the Music video.
The thing that really sets the 2 of you apart from so many other reactors (especially Americans) is the level of quiet consideration, insight & a sincere respect that you both bring to each & every video. A couple of old & beautiful souls……
I thought "Christmas Truce" hurt, but this one really brought the tears. Bravo to Lemmy for writing, and bravo to Sabaton for honoring it. I think both with it and "Christmas Truce" they both need their outro music for reflection and to absorb everything in. Tina did amazing work with her cello arrangement on this. If you look at the names of the different soldiers in the credits they are all real soldiers who fought in the Great War, WWII, or historic figures such as Robert the Bruce or Leonidas. All of them heroes.
It's fine to let out the emotions sometimes; not a bad idea at all. I saw this performed live in Leeds last week, and it was so emotional. So let's raise a few glasses: to Birmingham, birthplace of metal; to Lemmy (RIP); to Sabaton; and to those who sacrificed so much. My wife's grandfather was one of those who lied about his age - he was only 14 when he went to the Front! He got out alive, thanks to some amazing luck: he was wounded and taken to a field hospital, and his own father was there at the same time. He swore a lot when he saw his son, then wrote to his wife back home explaining the situation. She in turn sent evidence of their boy's age to the War Office and they pulled him out. After he came home he never spoke to anyone in the family about his experiences. Lest We Forget.
The Newfoundland Regiment at Beaumont Hamel on the Somme, sent 800 men into battle at 9:15a on July 1, 1916. Only 68 answered roll call the next morning, none ever making it near the German front line. Within 15 minutes of leaving their trench, 85% were dead, dying or wounded.
I was as tearful as Dominika. Seeing her so moved, I could tell she feels the same as when I heard the song the first time. The History makes it hit so much harder than just an awesome song. It makes sure those who gave all will never be forgotten. Being forgotten would be the greatest travesty anyone could suffer after giving their all. Dominka, please accept this warm hug from an equally moved internet stranger.
there were also Aces in Exile, as well as Ye Olde Pub from No Bullets Fly. Almost every character and scene were connected to some Sabaton song in one way or another. This is also I think the first time that Sabaton did second song about the similar event. At least that's how I see it (1916 tells similar story as Price of a Mile, but from different, more spine-chilling perspective) Difference is that 1916 is about Somme while Price of a Mile is about Passchendaele. And the it hits you when you realize that entire war was like this, not only these two battles...
The World needs these songs trumpeting the horrors of War. Thank you both for another powerful reaction. ❤ Please try Don McLean, The Grave, another powerful anti-war song.
I can't add anything about the song, or either version....both left me in tears so I'll just say I love you two and really appreciate your reactions!xxx❤❤
What a wonderful and heartfelt reaction, been watching a few reactions as Sabaton are one of my favourite bands since 2010. Your discussion after was spot on too. It’s such a beautiful and yet tragic song and obviously the horrific and insane truth behind what really happened is appalling. Sabaton have brought so many historical stories to life that most of us probably would never know about had they not brought it to our attention. 🤘🏻🙂
Musically, the original is more like the closing credits here with only cello, a snare drum, and Lemmy's voice. Sabaton adds more instrumentation, guitars, and choirs making a grander sound without sacrificing any emotion. Like how they had Floor singing during the credits for Christmas Truce, that's Tina Gao playing cello during these credits.
Sabaton made a powerful tribute to Motörhead and their great song 1916. But they did more... A tribute to all fallen solders in history. All the different soldiers from different ages refer to specific Sabaton songs. The Lady coming out of the dark ally is one of the Night Witches. The convertible car refers to the car where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was shot in Sarajevo which caused WWI. And at the end of the song was "The Old Pub" the B17 bomber from the song No bullets fly...
Love your reactions to Sabaton because you guys feel so much from the songs and of course Sabaton is really good at making one feel what they are giving as well.
Beautiful reaction. So glad you have done this. The original version by Motörhead never fails to make me cry and this is just the same. It's a wonderful tribute not only to Lemmy but to every single soldier in history. My town lost a few men during the battle of the somme and I always make time to remember them and the thousands of other young lads who never made it back home to their loved ones. Correct you don't have to be tough. Be yourself Andrey. That's all that counts. May 3th I'm going to see Sabaton in Amsterdam and this song is on the setlist. I'm nit going to be tough but myself, so I will be crying😢.
As a Motörhead fan i was really reluctant to listen to this one at first because i was afraid Sabaton might mess things up for me. I Also am a huge Sabaton fan however but maybe i was afraid more for the emotions this would wake up and yeah i cried alot. Very nice reaction by you guys and i cried along with you.
You can't be strong to something like this. It tears apart your soul. All that lives ... for absurdity of war? For something that will be overwritten by some post-conflict acts? Respect for all war casualties, which ever site they fought for. I have respect for the man and for the chivalry they fought for - not ideology. Rest in peace heroes - as long as we who heard this song are alive, you are alive too. As one of the Serbian writer said long times ago - we all die two time, first time when we stop breathing, and the second time when there is one one to remembers us. Salute!
Feeling a song like this is not weakness if you don't feel this song you're not strong you're a sociopath, especially considering we're about to do it all over again
An emotional song/ tribute deserves - no demands an emotional reaction and you both delivered in spades (little Motörhead nod) as usual. Please don’t apologize for being human.
Overall I still prefer the original version, but this is still an epic cover, and amazing video. I liked their decision to include soldiers from various wars, not just the war the song is about. I also loved the way Sabaton showed respect to Motorhead. The bus at the start was a nod to the classic 'No Sleep Til Hammersmith' album, the flag, the cameo from the two surviving members, and seeing them on either side of what I believe is their old tour manager, holding a photo of Lemmy. Sometimes I make it that far into the video before shedding a tear, but I have yet to make it further. Thank you for another heartfelt and thoughtful reaction. I was hoping it wouldn't be long until you saw this version of the song, although I can understand Andrei's reluctance at first. Good job guys.
Would love to give you 100K waches and a million likes!! I love that you care! and do it everytime! In my exp anyone that had it tuff in any way, history and Sabaton hit harder....(If you had a hardtime it just hit you harder, some kind of realte, i dont know it just hit harder :-)
Lemmy n co cover :) history repeats itself sadly as shown in the walking crowd rest easy Lem Never forgotten nor should the fallen from that battle be (had family fighting there 17 years old) biggest waste of lives that battle

Having heard only the original version with Lemmy, and then hearing this one later, i can say that to me the original sounds better. But then again I don't even like sabaton, something about their style and vocals that is just not my cup of coffee.
It's probably the video that triggers people's emotions rather than the different version of the song. I still prefer the original. Just because it's not so overblown and relying on a video and the people in it. Lemmy's voice really sounded sad and the celli (or keyboards playing celli) gave the song that special vibe and melancholy. Having a lead guitar in the middle section, hm, I don't know...
Beautifully said guys, spot on. Someone was cutting onions somewhere, brilliant song 👍 Actually reading a book at the moment about Anzacs that were passed at enlistment that were under age, the youngest that made it to the battlefield was 13.
2 million Russian soldiers died in WWI. 24 million Russians died in WWII if you combine both civilian and military deaths. There were 14 million civilians killed and 10 million soldiers killed. Neither is acceptable, and, yes, Russia had more soldiers die in WWII than any other country. By far. I don’t know that horror is a strong enough word. China came in second at 4 million soldiers. Not a game anyone would want to play. Japan had 2 million military deaths and then the United States and Yugoslavia at between 400,000-450,000. By-country deaths went down from there. We’re supposed to be a smart species capable of learning by experience. Lest we forget? We already have.
Lemmy's original is chilling to listen to.
But this Sabaton Tribute to the song and artist/s is haunting and hits deep with the visuals.

Couldn't agree more. Motorhead's is a funeral march while Sabaton's is a tribute. Both work superbly and deliver what they meant to.

The female soldier is actually ATS (Auxiliary Territorial Service) Ivy Valentine, but she's looking up at the Night Witches briefly.

Lemmy's voice really sounded sad and the celli (or keyboards playing celli) gave the song that special vibe and melancholy. Having a lead guitar in the middle section, hm, I don't know...
Beautifully said guys, spot on.
Someone was cutting onions somewhere, brilliant song 👍
Actually reading a book at the moment about Anzacs that were passed at enlistment that were under age, the youngest that made it to the battlefield was 13.
the original is unbeaten. it also comes without visual effects. that's what makes it so valuable..! And Lemmy is Lemmy..! RiP..🖤
Salutari prieteni, mare reactie 🤘🤘
Авы все знаете что жа всю войну погибли400 тысячь Американцев а Русских 27 милион.учите Историю вы незнаете что такое ужасс...
Pretty bad song. Not one of their best. 2/5
