I have to add something even though I’m late. The AIDS epidemic was absolutely still raging at this time, so their message of safe sex was SUPER important, but their message was also about women taking their own initiative with sex. Not only when and with who, but insisting on the protection that was a literal life-saver at the time. HIV/AIDS in 1992 was still a fairly quick death sentence, I can’t really explain how pervasive the fear of it was, and how amazing these three women were for taking their message to their audiences.
This was their debut single. It was the first the world saw of TLC. When this song debuted it caused controversy because they were dressed like teenagers and singing about sex. Radio stations censored the line "two inches or a yard..." lyric when they played the song on the radio and parents were trying to get the video banned. The controversy quickly died down once they revealed themselves to be adults and that their message was to promote safe sex at a time when the hiv epidemic was still a major issue. Just 3 months prior the group Salt n Pepa had a huge international hit with the song "let's talk about sex." They also received backlash when they first released it until they revealed the song was about promoting safe sex. TLC and their handlers undoubtedly took a little from the Salt n Pepa playbook with Aint 2 proud 2 beg and their overall approach to the album. Salt n Pepa is one of the most successful girl groups of all time. Their genre is rap/ hip hop so they're rarely ever mentioned amongst the most successful girl groups ( also because they are MOSTLY a duo), but they've got more hits than most girl groups combined. Their hit Push it was named one of the most sampled songs of all time but they had hits like expression, you showed me, do you really want me, champagne, whatta man, shoop, and none of your business. If you're not familiar with them, you should check them out. Another group that gets left out of the best girl group conversation (mainly because they're considered a band) is the 80's all girl band, Klymaxx. They had a song that simply defined late 80's rnb and among my personal favorite of all time "I miss you." They showed off their creativity with hits like "meeting in the ladies room," "the men all pause" "man size love" "Sexy" and my second favorite from them "Id still say yes" If you want to be surprised by a TLC song, check out "this is how it works" from the waiting to Exhale soundtrack. It's the song they talked about in their documentary that they thought would be a hit but their management didn't fight to get it released.
Man I wish everyone from this generation could have been around during this era. I know I’m bias I listen to new music as well but it was so much more fun back then. 💯
Yup TLC were our heroes!! I 1st heard this track on the 🚌, on the way home in 8th grade. Lol Me and my friends were all like who are these amazing women?! Fell in love with them & their music from then on out throughout the yrs to come! Huge impact on our lives! 💙✌🏻
5:56 - 5:58 "chopping up parts" 😂 FUN FACTS Jack: NOT ONLY was this TLC's debut song from their debut album, it was also written by Lisa (Left Eye) Lopes and the producer of the album Dallas Austin. RIP Left Eye 🥰 great reaction Jack
I've been waiting for this review. Everytime I hear this song it reminds me of living on my own for the first time. I remember hearing this song for the first time. In fact, I think it was the first time the radio station had played it. I had just moved to Florida for tech school after graduating from high school. I immediately loved it and cracked up at the lyrics. Had to call my sis to see if she had heard 'this new group called 'TLC' it yet; she hadn't. I'm not even sure when I saw what they looked like because I didn't have cable in order to see the video. Must have seen them on Arsenio Hall's show. Great, fun song. Great review.
ITS BEEN TOO LONG, I need you back on the holy Quad of 90s girl groups (En Vogue, TLC, Xscape, SWV). I recommend TLC - Get It Up (the video is a lil hard to find, might be a good Patreon exclusive WINK WINK) & Digging On You En Vogue - Free Your Mind, Part Of Me, Runaway Love (all 3 are songs where all 4 members shine like Don't Let Go) also the song "Don't Go" Xscape - Who Can I Run To, My Little Secret, Can't Hang, Feels So Good SWV - Can We (ft. Missy), Downtown (1 of the best freaky songs EVERERRRR)
I was 11 years old when this came out, and i actually remember when it did and premiered on television, had a thing for each one of them at some point in life lol, R.I.P left eye

That lady at the end of the music video was Pebbles who was/is a singer and was their manager at that time. She had her own hits Girlfriend and Mercedes Boy.
The start of my love and admiration of my favorite group of all time. Please react to their music videos Hat 2 Da Back and Sleigh Ride and also their 10 minute interview from the 1996 Grammy Awards.
This song had more samples than costco. The main one used the most is a sped up sample of “school boy crush” by Average White Band “School boy crush” has also been sampled by Eric B and Rakim’s “microphone fiend”, Floetry & Mos Def’s “wanna b where u r” and Immature’s “watch me do my thing”
Great commentary Jack! Very insightful! Before they hit nationally I was visiting the ATL and everyone kept calling me Chilli and I had no clue why until this video hit lol turns out I was a younger clone, hair, style and looks. It was crazy!
They had equal parts more on their first album. Left Eye got less parts as each album came out. Like the album version of "No Scrubs" doesn't have Left Eye on it. They added her for the video, and she has the best part.
my friends and i went crazy for this song when it came out in 1992. we all had a crush on Chili. i "low key" had a crush on T-Boz too. they tried to kiss the tv screen every time Chili came on the screen. she was always a favorite.
You need to check more TLC “Get It Up”, “Sleigh Ride”, “Diggin on you”, “Kick your game”, “Dear Lie”, “I’m good at being bad”, “Silly Ho”, “If they knew”, “Meant to be”, “This is how it should be done”, “His story”
YOU'RE AMAZING Jack 💯 If I "May" make a small suggestion; the Music is a tiny bit "low" on the Volume.. DEFINITELY not a Criticism, cause "YOU'RE" AWESOME, and I really appreciate all your hard work and skill💯💯💯
TLC is definitely the coolest girl group ever! Great chemistry, high energy, and down to earth. Spice Girls is another girl group that I really like. Similar chemistry and energy. You should check them out. 😁
