  • Hello! I'm Zara, I'm 15 and I have Tourette's Syndrome :)
    Here's some footage from a few months ago that I filmed in different lessons showing what it's like to have tics and Tourette's in school.
    A lot of you know me from TikTok but I'm now posting here on RUclips too! I have a lot of class footage filmed but any video requests or ideas are much appreciated!

I grew up in a time when Tourette's wasn't known to the public or even to those who had it. I was in my middle teens before I knew what was happening to me was a known phenomena. You get it out there & the more people who know what it is the best life is for those who have it. Thank you.

      tell them you have tics! tics are completely valid and you don’t need a diagnosis to have a tic, a tic is just an involuntary movement or sound. you can’t say you have tourettes or a tic disorder yet as those need professional diagnosis but if your tics are a problem, tell them your tics are a problem :))

      @sophiecourt5006 3 года назад +64

      Hey, so I'm not Zara obviously but I have tourettes so i hope this can help
      The biggest tip I could give is acceptance, accept yourself, that you have tics, that you can't control it and that it is ok to tic. This way whatever happens you will be ok and comfortable with yourself
      Second is, maybe let your school know? If you feel this will be helpful and you feel you need extra support then please let your school know
      And third is, be kind to yourself, tics are tiring and stressful at times, make sure you try to sleep properly as being tired with make them worse and make sure you take care of yourself, be confident.
      Most of my classmates are used to it now, they say that it is now a background noise to them and that it doesnt bother them whatsoever and the same with my teachers
      I hope this is helpful and good luck, you've got this!

    • @Zara_Beth
      @Zara_Beth  3 года назад +84

      it’s hard but my advice to learn to accept yourself first then show others that tics are normal and be you :) use music and other coping mechanisms and hopefully with help from staff and support you’ll be good !

    First, i love your channel - seeing the reality of what people with Tourettes go through, or any disability, the struggle that comes with it, the negativity, the rudeness of others as well as the goodness of others, is really what this world needs. Even though it's 2023, there is still such a negative (stereotype/attitude/connotation, whatever) toward assorted disabilities - autism, ADHD, Tourettes, blindness, deafness, TBI, whatever - that NEEDS to change. Having platforms like yours where you show the reality of what you go through is SO IMPORTANT. People like you are the reason that change happens. Some people who don't know about your disability will watch your channel, be educated, and see things differently - for the better. Don't listen to the negative things that people say about you, because they're not really seeing you.
    I think you've had a video where you mention you were in "Supply" class? Is that correct, or am I mistaken? If there is, in fact, that class mentioned at some point, what is it? I'm watching from eastern US and I've never heard of it. What is it?
    As I said, I love your channel. Great work.

    I was constantly tired and super stressed and anxious at my first job and I actually ended up developing tics. They aren't as bad as someone who actually has Tourette's but they're annoying AF. It's a little whistle, a handshake, and a very annoying head twitch, which if it happens a lot starts to hurt. Since leaving that job they only happen when I'm anxious or excited. But some things can trigger them for me. it's mostly this little whistle thing, like the one a bird does. I was in Oklahoma to see my grandma and her bird does it and I sat there like doing it back and forth with him because of my tic. It was quite exhausting. I think the people who have Tourette's and go to public school are so brave. My tics are so small but it still freaks me out when it happens in public. I was at a party and was like high anxiety and I was sitting at a table with 2 girls my age and I had the little twitch and a snap and apologized cause people think it's weird. It also seems to happen a lot when I'm home alone. My psychiatrist said it's not super uncommon so she isn't worried, it could also be from my meds but she says I shouldn't worry about it unless they get worse.

    did the friend who mimicked/set off your tics bother you? at first thought it might seem that it could make you feel less embarrassed to not be the only one doing it (like with the middle fingers part) but with more consideration it seems very insensitive to do anything more than a small giggle at something the person with tics laughs at first. i don’t have tourette’s but it seems that calling attention to them/mimicking them would make it worse. how do you feel about that in retrospect?

    Hi, Zara!
    You are such a beautiful, kind and caring person!
    I saw your video for the first time today and I am not familiar with your condition. Would it be alright to make a suggestion based on my understanding of how things work in this world?… Would you consider relocating to a foreign country (for a while at least) to challenge your current condition with a totally new environment? In other situations, I have seen it work - it’s a reset in a way.
    Please forgive me if my suggestion makes you feel somehow uncomfortable. It’s just my opinion, after all, and you can disregard it.
    I wish you all the best and lots of blessings in your life!

    this whole video is painfully relatable
    desperately trying to whisper tics in a quiet classroom
    your friends accidentally encouraging tics
    the embarrassed laughter
    highly offensive tics on complete accident

    i haven't been diagnosed or think its much, but i often have similar kind of things like tics, more so around people. but il say something random , or make a little noise. when i was in school, 2 years ago now, i dont know where it came from but i started saying chicken often and sometimes not realise till secconds after. Im not sure if it could be tourettes or maybe it will develop more into life. i know Lewis Capaldi was diagnosed with it i think last year. Also watching people tic makes me almost copy them. and most times i do stop myself because i feel like id be making fun of tourettes and i like to be respectful to everyone.

    from what ive heard from my friend (with tics) and other youtubers, some tics are okay to have a laugh about but if its the harmful or bad tics they should not be taken as something funny. How do you think people in your school handle that situation?
