- The Grinning Man is back for Winter 2020, and will be available on demand from 20 Nov, only on bristololdvic.org.uk.
In this original cast recording from 2016, watch The Grinning Man star Louis Maskell sing 'Labyrinth' from the show.
THE GRINNING MAN
A strange new act has arrived at the fairground. Who is Grinpayne and how did he get his hideous smile? Helped by an old man, a lone wolf and a blind girl, his story must be told.
The epic tale of an abandoned child with a terrible secret. A disfigured youth who is desperate to hide and a sightless girl who longs to be discovered. Let the darkness seduce you.
Following a triumphant premiere as part of our 250th Anniversary season, and it's acclaimed run at Trafalgar Studios in London's West End, we are delighted that The Grinning Man has returned, and this time we are bringing the fairground straight to your house.
Based on The Man Who Laughs by Victor Hugo and brought to life by director Tom Morris (Touching the Void) and writer Carl Grose (Dead Dog in a Suitcase), don't miss this digital revival, captured during its original Bristol run by TVPP, and featuring a sensational original score by Tim Phillips and Marc Teitler and puppetry from Gyre & Gimble - the original puppeteers of War Horse!

I PRAY this gets picked up again, it's honestly one of my favourite musicals
Still don't get it how this musical isn't more popular?? its soooooo underrated!!!! the songs are chillingly beautiful!!!! it´s grotesque in a good way and so original! im in looove
But it has a diferent feel...it´s more grotesque and tim burtonesque:) Do u know where i can watch a bootleg of this online??? I dont live in the uk and im dying to see it!!
I feel like more people would be if the full soundtrack was released! I’m getting super into it, but now I would get even more obsessed if I could see / experience a bigger chunk of it
It’s become more popular, the last performance on Saturday was incredible. I’m going to miss this show.
sophie waghorn just in case any of u don’t know the soundtrack is on yt now💖(I also found a bootleg)
panda pug oh my god! Could I have the link please?
Mesmerizing. This guy sings like a fallen angel. Great actor. Magical show, truly enjoyable. Fantastic puppetry. Go see the show in London!
Is it possible to be in love with a voice
More than 100%
Yesss
If it's this one, then definitely yes!
Absalutely
I just saw The Grinning Man twice and it was fantastic! Louis Maskell is amazing and has some amazing vocals. He is my favourite. I love Grinpayne. Louis Maskell shows a lot of charisma and stays within the character of Grinpayne and that is what I love about the show and I find that truly amazing and the musical itself shows a bit of seduction and spine-chilling scenes.
The Grinning Man is a chilling, beautiful love story that is filled with love, hate, and seduction.
Love this show and it has been the best musical I have ever seen this far.
Louis Maskell is a MASTERPIECE
if i could inject this rendition of this song into my veins i would it sends chills down my spine everytime i listen to it is hauntingly beautiful in every aspect of the term
That last note just flies out of his mouth so easily wtf
That was terrifyingly beautiful
The city with its dark embrace shows its twisted damaged face,
and reflects the labyrinth of my mind,
here amognst these winding streets,
invisiable I move with ease,
no one sees the monster walking by,
whose is the mask I'm wearing,
whose is the past I'm carrying,
no body can see past my hideous grin,
I can't put a name to the monster within,
what was it I left behind on that black and bitter night,
It's lost within the labyrinth of my mind,
everywhere I look I see the darkness eating into me,
why is it that the truth's so hard to find,
what if the face I'm hiding is a ll that there is deep inside me,
even if I knew what had caused all this pain,
why in hell would I want to feel it agian,
a little bottle dulls the pain,
until the pain comes back again,
It's hiding in the labyrinth of my mind,
this letter brings a pulse of life to a beating heart cut by a knife,
maybe it's time to leave my past behind,
this search for the past hasn't healed me,
may even have helped to conceal me,
this woman sheds a true one light on my disgrace,
because she sees the beauty in my broken face...
ps. I know it's not perfect but it's something
Tim Phillips and Marc Teitler absolutely need to write the music for a The Night Circus musical adaption
This song is criminally underrated!!
homie, this is my favorite song in the show
what a great way to open up a second act and what a FANTASTIC performance
like, bruh, I went FERAL listening to the placement of the notes and the breath support
so brilliant
This is my new favourite musical. I need more of Louis Maskell’s vocal range
Went to see this last night and can't stop thinking about it or reenacting scenes. As a big fan of musical theatre, I absolutely adored this
The Election Of 1800 how was it? I live in Texas so I’m kind of limited to seeing big productions .
PLEASE BRING THIS SHOW TO BROADWAY!!!!!! 😭😭😭😭
Possibly the most beautiful voice I’ve ever heard
Best piece of theatre I have seen the amount of work that has been put in really comes through in the final performance everything is amazing and all the cast were so intriguing I wish I could watch this musical again and again!! FANTASTIC
I get Goosebumps every time I listen to this song!!
The belt at the end tho
Louis (and the rest of the cast) are INSANELY talented!!!
Saw this in London yesterday with my fiancée and it was just entirely breathtaking. Been seeking out the music on RUclips and SoundCloud since. Would love a full soundtrack so much! Louis Maskell is simply incredible, I hope he continues to get more work!
All of my steampunk dreams just became real. I need the cast recording to listen religiously everyday
When you get a SmileDirect ad before the video XD
Oh my god that's amazing 😂
I remeber watching this when it was live on youtube and I miss it every day because I cant find anything about it anywhere
That final note! I don’t understand! The vocals in this are so incredible I don’t know what to do
It's so wonderful to see fellow theater artists discovering "The Man Who Laughs"! I've actually been working on a play adaptation of my own since about 2009 and it's an incredibly moving, haunting story to work with. And this song captures Gwynplaine's character beautifully. This would make Victor Hugo very proud. You can feel his energy and emotions in the music and lyrics, the man made to play the clown, a role he never asked for, and yet all that grief is soothed by his love for Dea, and the love she gives to him. So powerful. Bravo and blessed be. )O(
Wow... This is an inspirational masterpiece of a song, delivered equally so by an excellent vocalist... Just wow
I watched this with my school as part of my exam work. It makes me want to act more. I love how amazing people can inspire others.
Can we please put this recording on Apple Music please
Just seen him in Lord of the Rings and i think about his voice every day
Seen it twice at Trafalgar Studios. Absolutely wonderful.
Love this guys voice. Hope I can pull this off in auditions! Saw this musical last week as well. Absolutely amazing.
I follow this guy on Twitter and he remembered me in the theatre! Dreams coming true
Just booked tickets to see it again! Brilliantly performed and totally original. Louis Maskell has the most hauntingly expressive voice. We need a cast recording!
Saw this last night, the whole show was incredible. Not a huge fan of the ending (may have been more dramatic with the original ending in the book) but thoroughly enjoyable :)
Oh gosh, I want to see this
This is amazing! When are you guys bringing out a soundtrack? :)
Amazing and very underrated. For me the best thing I've seen in years on West End (besides Hamilton, of course).
I had the pleasure of seeing this and everything from the venue to the puppets to the makeup was breath taking.
The musical is so gooood I recommend it
wow! Just amazing! WOW
Love this performance. Love the show. Extraordinary live on stage. Go see if you can.

Just saw the West End production at Trafalgar Studios and it's a masterpiece of a show - . Magical dark funny inventive storytelling - beautifully played with moving music and amazing puppetry. Go!
If jack skellington was a human..he sounds alot like him dont tell me other wise

This was the best thing I’ve seen on stage....went to see it twice with only one week apart lol 😂
Saw this on Saturday, best thing we've seen in ages, can't stop watching this clip now
*I just want a karaoke/instrument version of this song so badly*
There are Instrumentals and it sounds very much like the actual backing tracks. I will try that Song myself ;-p
this song is amazing, I love it and I cant wait to come watch grinning man on the 13th of November so excited and Louis you have a beautiful and inspirational voice, I honestly wish you the best in the future and hope to see you do more amazing performances like this.

I wish they will put this back on Spotify, I miss this show. It left such a strong impression on me
BRAVO
Fabulous voice... Hope it has another run.
West end in September
Where? The West End is a BIG place? Thanks for letting me know Jack.
It's fine I emailed the composer and he said something on the lines of its continuing its run beyond Bristol and going into the west end in September :)
I'm trying to learn this- love it btw!
I’m begging this show comes back to west end🥺
Obsesionada con esta canción ❤
Marc! Unfortunately, I’ve lost your contact, but I found this amazing video! It’s stunning! Happy to find you again!
BRB finna make an animatic and cry ;))
Wow
I need the cast recording! Does anybody know when it's coming out??
IngunnLK commenting here because I too need this information
I'm here because of that too 🙈
They’re working on the concept album, but with the schedule in London, I expect it will get complete just after it’s run, which ends May 5th. So around May/June
It starts on 1st of May, so don't miss it :)
Olga Sheftelevich What starts? The cast album doesn’t appear to be happening due to expenses, which is sad.
2 more weeks in London! If they are going to do a cast recording they may as well do it once it's off-stage
Has anybody else had crying sessions to this song?
Reminds me of the music from The Black Hole (in a good way). So looking forward to seeing this in London next month... :-)
fab
louis maskell could murder me and id thank him
bruh same
The lyrics are trite at times, but there IS potential. Best thing about this is the music and vocals.
Ugh I need a recording of him singing every single song in existence, but my fave secret dream is he’d play Jesus in JCS and do Gethsemane the way that song should be sung.
I just found this and was wondering if anyone knew when the soundtrack would be coming out because as someone who lives in a different country than where this is I would love to listen to the soundtrack! Thanks!
I LOVE THIS!!!! Where is the sheet music?!?!?!!?
I like piano
They obviously recorded a cast album, please release it
You can buy the album from our website at www.bristololdvic.org.uk/shop
is the grinning man still available to be rented? for some reason i can’t find it on the website :(
So, when are we getting the soundtrack?
If T’Challa heard this: Get this show a cast recording.
How do we make this more popular?
Share this around till July the 3rd when it becomes unavailable

Who else is here from Amy Lovatt?
Lilly Page-I am, I saw her mention The Grinning Man in one of her videos & decided to look it up. I've been hooked ever since & might have fallen in love with Louis Maskell's portrayal of Grinpayne.
His voice reminds me of Jarkko Ahola.
I NEED THE SCORE
That is all
Anyone know where to get sheet music?
who else is here from the phantom reviewer?
I can't find his video on the Grinning Man any more! Do you have a link to it?
is there anyway i could watch without paying
There isn't, I'm afraid. But to rent the show is only £4.50. And every rental goes towards paying the artists who've made the show. Watch it here: bristololdvic.org.uk/grinning-man
@@BristolOldVicTheatre hi, I clicked the link but it says that the page is unavailable... Is there any other way I could rent the show?
Give me this guy's name !! Please!
Jeremiasz Gzyl Louis Maskell 😉
