I got baptized and confirmed in to the Catholic Church I was Protestant and your videos help convince me along with Dr Scott Hahn. Jimmy is so good at articulating the teachings of the church. I have always found it wanting in the Protestant Church I have tried numerous denominations which in itself is a strong tale that denominations means division! I stopped protesting!! I found that searching the history and the saints who walked with the apostles you cannot remain a Protestant knowing the true history of the church Jesus started. The Catholic Church!!!! 😊

Trent Horn very effectively rebutted Pastor Mike Wingers anti Catholic screed. Mike Winger is guilty of bearing false witness which is a violation of the 9th commandment and a mortal sin. Unfortunately Mike Winger being a fundamentalist has no way to be absolved of a mortal sin since fundamentalists don’t have the Sacrament of Reconciliation. You can confess directly to God but you have to have perfect contrition which means you can’t have any attachment to sin whatsoever, either mortal or venial otherwise your sin remains. That is what Protestants are up against when they commit post baptismal mortal sins without the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Winger said that people receive the Eucharist to get rid of their mortal sins or something to that effect. Receiving the Eucharist in a state of mortal sin is itself a mortal sin and not only doesn’t get rid of mortal sin but as Saint Paul said it is “Eating and drinking judgement on yourself.” You must go to confession first if you are in a state of mortal sin before receiving the Eucharist.
This program was very engaging and I am very thankful for Jimmy’s thoughtful answers. I am a 67 year old woman who just came into the Catholic church last August because Sola Scriptura became a problem logically. I am so thankful for the Catechism of the Catholic church for it’s clear teaching and reverence for our Holy God. Keep up the great work!
There are so many publishers all claim their bible is true word of God but which one speaks the truth. Did Jesus command Martin Luther, King James to publish the Bible in the scripture? If sola scripture is only source to read and learn then why Father Abraham told a rich man to listen to Moses and Prophets. And why Jesus said if two disagrees then listen to the Church? Did he ever said read the Bible and set a side the difference. God send Prophets to prepare warn and teach lot more than what’s in the Bible. God send Prophets to prepare for son of God. I don’t believe God send the scripture. Do you?
@@hcho7776 Thank you for your reply, but I think you misunderstood me. While I no longer believe in ‘Solo Scriptura’, I read the bible every day because I believe it is the inspired word of God. However I no longer view scripture as the only basis for church doctrine. I have heard many wrong ideas spring from misinterpretation of the Bible. I thank God for leading me to the Catholic church.

I was an agnostic a few years back and became skeptical of God and Jesus but after going into recovery and sobriety i sat down one day and thought a lot about everything in my life as i understood it and decided i would live life in a specific and unique way. Then I realized that way was already found by Jesus Christ in the Catholic Church. Peace be with you.

1:28:15 - I appreciated his response to the question of how the Mass is sometimes celebrated with non-traditional accompaniments, like music played with instruments from different cultures etc. The Latin phrase he mentioned, "de gustibus non est disputandum" (do not dispute about matters of taste), encapsulated the situation well. To use the Aristotelian terminology, matters of taste would be accidents rather than substances with regards to the validity of the Mass, and therefore not grounds for evaluating its authenticity (and I say this as one who much rather prefers the traditional approach - timelessness over novelty seems more appropriate for the worship of the one eternal God)

It started with Constantine that this became totally Satan's world at that time. Father Rippenger has put forth an amazing Mariological presentation showing just how significant she is. She isn’t God. She always points to Jesus. But her specialness within the economy of the kingdom of God cannot be underestimated! It really open my eyes!
The pope is NOT Christ on Earth. Papal authority does not override scripture, like the changed Sactified Sabbath to appeal to pagans.AH said repetitive prayers are pagan. Mary had children after YESHUA. Passover is Biblical. Easter was taken to appeal to pagans and so vile.. Christmas is pagan and vile The celebration of the mother goddess is pagan. You should know there are Christian patristics scholars (and more of them-not that their numbers matter) who are not Roman Catholics and they’re not dummies that simply misunderstand what the fathers taught.
@@severalstories3420 Mostly because those scholars already posses presuppositions & strong biases towards their handed-down traditions within Orthodoxy or Protestantism. If one were to study Church History & read the Early Church Fathers with a non-biased lens, you will have no choice but to be Catholic. They point to the papacy, the chair of Peter in Rome, the Eucharist, bishops, Apostolic succession, the priesthood, Mary, etc. They don’t point in any direction towards 16th century Protestantism or Orthodoxy.
@YAJUN YUAN Hello, Studying Church history demonstrates that the Church Christ established has had philosophical & theological developments that help us understand the faith more clearly from 2,000 years ago. This can easily be seen by reading the Seven Ecumenical Councils-which show the development of how the Church has had to defend core doctrines throughout Church history from heresy & attacks. I think it is proper that there are later developments & understandings of Christianity after 2,000 years, which can be articulated by the Church in the Catechism. Through faith & *reason* Catholics are able to strongly defend & articulate the faith to nonbelievers, Orthodox Christians or Protestant Christians.
@YAJUN YUAN The beauty of the Catholic Church is that the core dogmas that center on the Eucharist, Apostolic succession, the priesthood, baptismal regeneration, etc. can be found in no other Church that can be traced back to the first century. This is coming from a former nondenominational evangelical Protestant.
@YAJUN YUAN Yes, some Church Fathers have had differing understandings of the Eucharist but majority believed the very literal meaning as seen in John 6, when thousands of disciples left Jesus over this teaching & literal language. Remember, Jesus did not correct the disciples (who decided to leave him over this teaching) instead, Jesus emphasized the teaching more literally. Next, our ability to reason through the literal language of Christ in John 6 can point us in the direction that majority of Church Fathers (who believed in the literal sense) are correct over the few minority, who believed the Eucharist only as a sole spiritual sense. Also, some of the Church Fathers who you assert provided a symbolic sense may be interpreted as the literal sense. Let’s use Augustine for an example. Augustine “Christ was carried in his own hands when, referring to his own body, he said, ‘This is my body’ [Matt. 26:26]. For he carried that body in his hands” (Explanations of the Psalms 33:1:10 [A.D. 405]). “I promised you [new Christians], who have now been baptized, a sermon in which I would explain the sacrament of the Lord’s Table. . . . That bread which you see on the altar, having been sanctified by the word of God, is the body of Christ. That chalice, or rather, what is in that chalice, having been sanctified by the word of God, is the blood of Christ” (Sermons 227 [A.D. 411]). “What you see is the bread and the chalice; that is what your own eyes report to you. Catholic Church is infallible because Jesus is head of the Catholic Church and his Church will stand until his second coming but men are fallible. Do I agree with Pope Francis? NO. But where should I go. I will stay firm to the teaching of Catholic Church. When you blasphemy against Catholic Church, you are actually blasphemy against Holy Spirit because spirit of Jesus is alive in the Church. Btw, without father and mother, you are an orphan.
People who abandon the Catholic Church when a pope is bad need first, to read history: we've had bad popes before and the Church has been preserved, so you're not special having to live during a time when the pope is bad. Second, if you leave the church because the pope is bad, you also need to leave your country when the president is bad; you need to become an anarchist and reject all laws when a police chief or judge is corrupt; you need to pull your kids out of school completely if you find out that a teacher is bad or an abuser; you need to quit your job if your boss is an immoral buffoon; you need to stop driving a car if you find out that a driving instructor broke a traffic law. We don't judge an institution by the people who FAIL to live up to the mission and ideals of the institution; we judge the institution by the mission and ideals of the institution. Otherwise, we all have to say, 'I'm quitting Christianity because Judas betrayed Jesus, so Jesus couldn't have been God or none of his apostles would have betrayed him.' The Apostles - like all of us, including popes - are FREE and we can break the rules. It doesn't mean that the rules are wrong and should be thrown out.
@YAJUN YUAN Blasphemy is not a form of heresy. Heresy means holding some wrong doctrine instead of the true one. Blasphemy means speaking against someone or something, usually God, in a sacreligious way. So one can blaspheme and still be orthodox. Just as they can commit other sins and still hold that the orthodox faith is true.

Matt & Jimmy, I’d like to point out that the Catholic bishops did publish a booklet on liturgical music called, “Sing to the Lord: Music in Divine Worship” (3rd edition) that includes guidelines, suggestions and a couple of hard rules (such as not using recorded music for Mass). As a long time liturgical musician and cantor (and old rock n roller) I found it very helpful.

The Mystery of Iniquity It has ever been the design of Satan to draw the minds of the people from Jesus to man, and to destroy individual accountability. Satan failed in his design when he tempted the Son of God; but he succeeded better when he came to fallen man. Christianity became corrupted. Popes and priests presumed to take an exalted position, and taught the people to look to them for the pardon of their sins, instead of looking to Christ for themselves. The people were wholly deceived. They were taught that the popes and priests were Christ’s representatives, when in fact they were the representatives of Satan, and those who bowed to them worshiped Satan. The people called for the Bible; but the priests considered it dangerous to let them have it to read for themselves, lest they should become enlightened and expose the sins of their leaders. The people were taught to receive every word from these deceivers as from the mouth of God. They held that power over the mind which God alone should hold. If any dared to follow their own convictions, the same hate which Satan and the Jews exercised toward Jesus would be kindled against them, and those in authority would thirst for their blood. I was shown a time when Satan especially triumphed. Multitudes of Christians were slain in a dreadful manner, because they would preserve the purity of their religion. The Bible was hated, and efforts were made to rid the earth of it. The people were forbidden to read it, on pain of death; and all the copies which could be found were burned. But I saw that God had a special care for His Word. He protected it. At different periods there were but a very few copies of the Bible in existence, yet He would not suffer His Word to be lost, for in the last days copies of it were to be so multiplied that every family could possess it. I saw that when there were but few copies of the Bible, it was precious and comforting to the persecuted followers of Jesus. It was read in the most secret manner, and those who had this exalted privilege felt that they had had an interview with God, with His Son Jesus, and with His disciples. But this blessed privilege cost many of them their lives. If discovered, they were taken to the headsman’s block, to the stake, or to the dungeon to die of starvation. Satan could not hinder the plan of salvation. Jesus was crucified, and rose again the third day. But Satan told his angels that he would make the crucifixion and resurrection tell to his advantage. He was willing that those who professed faith in Jesus should believe that the laws regulating the Jewish sacrifices and offerings ceased at the death of Christ, if he could push them farther and make them believe that the law of ten commandments also died with Christ. I saw that many readily yielded to this device of Satan. All heaven was moved with indignation as they saw the holy law of God trampled underfoot. Jesus and all the heavenly host were acquainted with the nature of God’s law; they knew that He would not change or abrogate it. The hopeless condition of man after the fall caused the deepest sorrow in heaven, and moved Jesus to offer to die for the transgressors of God’s holy law. But if that law could be abrogated, man might have been saved without the death of Jesus. Consequently His death did not destroy the law of His Father, but magnified and honored it and enforced obedience to all its holy precepts. Had the church remained pure and steadfast, Satan could not have deceived them, and led them to trample on the law of God. In this bold plan, Satan strikes directly against the foundation of God’s government in heaven and on earth. His rebellion caused him to be expelled from heaven. After he rebelled, in order to save himself he wished God to change His law, but was told before the whole heavenly host that God’s law was unalterable. Satan knows that if he can cause others to violate God’s law, he has gained them to his cause; for every transgressor of that law must die. Satan decided to go still farther. He told his angels that some would be so jealous of God’s law that they could not be caught in this snare; the ten commandments were so plain that many would believe that they were still binding, and therefore he must seek to corrupt only one of the commandments. He then led on his representatives to attempt to change the fourth, or Sabbath, commandment, thus altering the only one of the ten which brings to view the true God, the Maker of the heavens and the earth. Satan presented before them the glorious resurrection of Jesus, and told them that by His rising on the first day of the week, He changed the Sabbath from the seventh to the first day of the week. Thus Satan used the resurrection to serve his purpose. He and his angels rejoiced that the errors they had prepared took so well with the professed friends of Christ. What one looked upon with religious horror, another would receive. Thus different errors were received and defended with zeal. The will of God, so plainly revealed in His Word, was covered up with errors and traditions, which have been taught as the commandments of God. Although this heaven-daring deception will be suffered to be carried on until the second appearing of Jesus, yet through all this time of error and deception, God has not been left without witnesses. Amid the darkness and persecution of the church there have always been true and faithful ones who kept all of God’s commandments. I saw that the angelic host were filled with amazement as they beheld the sufferings and death of the King of glory. It’s amazing how purgatory and hell perfectly describe my walk through life and in the moments I’ve touched heaven, so serene was its peace and majesty, I did not even realize I was there. I’m convinced I have had moments of walking in the garden my whole life but can never realize when I’m in his perfect presence. I can only recognize my fall, when I’m out of its walled beauty.
I liked the comment about taste. Makes me feel better. I like our 7 am mass because there is no music or singing. It is quiet and peaceful. Sometimes I felt I was wrong for not liking the music in mass. I am a big rock guy. A Tool song actually got me to go to an ACT's retreat and repatriated me to the Church. "Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability To lift an eye to heaven, conscious of his fleeting time here" hit me like a ton of bricks even though I have heard it a 100 times before. I couldn't shake the lyric, signed up, and started working to change my life. The retreat was healing a thousand times over. I highly encourage all to attend.
Just a little correction not every country has a single head of state. Andorra for example is a co-Principality, many countries have both a prime minister and a president, and Bosnia and Herzegovina actually has 3 different leaders. Not to mention Switzerland has a whole council
Great discussion! First time I hear Jimmy Akin’s apologetics. Many of his points really hit some solid home runs, but some points I felt lacked enough strength to stand alone in defense of some big objections, like papal infallibility and the Marian dogmas. Perhaps the setting of this discussion did not provide ample space to peel these topics satisfactorily, but I have heard stronger arguments on these from the likes of Madrid, Horn, Hahn, and the Word on Fire team. On the topic of music which I found very interesting.. I used to live in a predominantly southern Baptist and evangelical black community, and attended the only Catholic Church right smack dab in the middle of this town. Most of its parishioners were Catholic converts from one of these other southern Christian denominations. The entire liturgical musical composition was in the style of Gospel Choir. So the Gloria, Lamb of God, the Great Amen, etc were all sang by a large group of gospel choir artists and a single pianist, and it was absolutely beautiful! Masses were 1.5 hours long, in large part because of the music, but it was one of the most beautiful and uplifting parishes I had ever been a part of. The processions at the beginning and end of the mass were just explosive with everyone across the pews clapping, singing, and dancing.. to say that hardly ANYONE left church before the priest processed out of the altar i think speaks volumes of how effective it’s musical energy was. God bless Fr. John who pastored this flock, I truly believe his leadership and his decision to interweave the culture of this region with the Catholic liturgy was part of what helped convert so many people there to Catholicism.

In my experience there’s a bunch of these community “pockets” all over Florida, when I lived there several years ago I found an apartment in a small quiet predominantly black baptist town south of Tampa bay. Met some amazing people and built great memories there. I completed my RCIA there in that parish, which by the way those classes were PACKED. People were converting to Catholicism in swarms. The priest there Fr John was the only priest running that church. He had no vicars or deacons, he presided all masses and co-led RCIA with a lay spiritual director. Whenever he was out of pocket there was a retired Franciscan friar who occasionally filled in for him. Overworked and all, he still ran such a lively parish and led his flock very effectively.

Great comment, it reminded me of a book I stumbled across years ago called "Why Catholics Can't Sing" by Thomas Day. It was an engaging account of the author's frustrations with how liturgical music was handled by many parishes these days (it seems yours is an outlier!), and his resultant efforts and experiences in researching and understanding how this current state of affairs was arrived at. I found it to be humorous and informative, as well as appropriately tongue-in-cheek, and though it may be difficult to source I'd recommend as a good read.

The fact that not one single place on the face of this earth claims to have any relic of Mary tells you all you need to now. Everyone would've known who she was at that time, people would've known if/when she died, where she would've been buried and would've used it as an attraction. The answer is just that simple

I just love Jimmy. Also, my husband and I are church musicians and I appreciate the latitude for our 'creative vision' 😅 But for us, we strive to think first about what would be the most fitting for the church/ community for which we are playing. But yes we definitely have to choose from the hymns and songs we play well.
As regards to believing "everything" before becoming Catholic, remember St. Peter did not understand what Jesus was talking about when He said, "eat my body, drink my blood". Peter answered "Lord, you have the words to eternal life"; he didn't say he understood, just that he knew He (Jesus) was the real Messiah; likewise, you may not understand why the Church teaches what she does, but she is the True Church.
I think there is beauty in the trust of God with what we cannot fathom yet. It's not about knowing it all, it's about being obedient to what we know and our obedience must always be aimed at Christ and not our own pride. That's why many protestants can't accept what the church teaches in many regards. Once you really become open and do your research, a door to more knowledge will open that humbles you even more and sets the demand for even more trust of God to learn even more in the future.
On the point about the church being against contraception when it helps to prevent abortions, I would argue that despite the surface level reasoning, deep down the opposite is true, that contraception (and the mentality it fosters) is really a fuel for abortion. The mindset is the same: not wanting to procreate while engaging in the act meant for procreation, so you cut off the possibility of a child that you would be responsible for. When the contraceptives couples use intending to avoid pregnancy fail as they sometimes do, lo there is a pregnancy they didnt intend to have, and many go for the “backup method.” It’s not a coincidence that 50% of women who abort were on contraceptives at the time they got pregnant according to Guttmacher. There is also good correlation between the increase of contraceptives and failed marriages since the 60’s. Humani Generis section 17 is prophetic.
To add to your point, some contraceptives don't prevent conception but prevent the fertilized egg from implanting by making the uteral lining chemically inhospitable to it. The reason there are 50% of abortions are among "on the pill" women is because they lowered the level of hormones in "the pill" as the evidence of bad side effects for previously higher levels was beginning to increase. They think they are taking a pill to prevent life from starting, instead they feed the spirit of death. The more you feed it the more monstrous it gets. The whole culture has involved to depend on a pill to fix all problems.
There is a scientific reason for the assumption as well. The old Testament says none of the Messiah's body will see corruption. I.e. decay. Microchimerism is the process whereby a few of the baby's cells are always found inside a mother for the rest of her life. Therefore, if she is decaying after death, then his cells are as well. Hence a small reason for the Assumption of Mary.
I believe it is acceptable to dance and clap in the church community hall, but I think it is inappropriate at the front of the altar where the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is said. Did not God tell Moses to take off his sandles before stepping on Holy ground? There is a time and a place for everything. The Altar and church in general should be respected.

Am a protestant, born and raised: I am an (amateur) student of literature, language, and the ideas communicated through both. I have specifically enjoyed following ideas from their origins in pure practice (agriculture, familial economy, social ties, etc) in the prehistoric world into their first stories in the age of oral tradition, and then into the more accessible world of literature. Have found Eliade and similar scholars hugely beneficial in understanding complex religious ideas. One doctrine of Catholicism I have come to wholly accept was the Mary tradition, merely because from a story perspective, if God incarnate is a man, there would need to be a holy feminine to produce that in the real world. Infants without mothers don’t become people, as we will soon learn when we try artificial wombs. That very long speech was to set up the following realization I have just come to, and will almost certainly be the last stepping stone in my own journey to the Church. The death of Mary in the Protestant church not only caused women to become imitators of men. (as the image of holy Feminine was gone), but it caused the pho-feminization (“toxic femininity” to borrow an awful colloquialism) of the church structure, and resulting Exodus of men from the church. The sheer masculine calling in the Catholic Church is predicated on its awareness of the divine feminine in the person of Mary. I am sure my prose is theological refuse, but I am a humble man of literature.
Nice approach. But I would not use "holy feminine" as a term for Mary, because it equates her with the gnostic understanding of a god duality. But Mary sure is a role model, not only for women. Actually, she is our mother, someone to look up to and ask to help us be more like Jesus. The saints, actually, are the role models more close to us. But the Protestant churches at large have also dumped the teaching on communion of the saints in favour of the idea of the sleeping dead. Anyway, peace be with you!

Not sure if I agree with the point at about 1:55 min. on the various "expressions" of the mass. If some variation encourages deeper devotion and greater piety, then it's reasonable to be open minded. But if the form of "expression" is clearly becoming THE focus (a previous parish I was in had a band with horns, drums, electric guitar and more) and reverence is lost in favor of what feels like entertainment, then has it crossed the line? If the congregation is applauding after songs or "skit's", that could be a sign to slow down and take stock. It can't all be on the back of the parishioners to accept anything that happens on the alter. Where is the pastors responsibility to celebrate the mass in a way that is holy and enriching for the parishioners and shows great reverence for the central purpose... the eucharist?
I live in an area that has limited access to Mass. We do not have a skilled choir. More bad notes than good. We still try. It is what it is. The great thing is that every seat if filled with people of tremendous faith who are there doing our public work and duty celebrating the Lord's Day.
We need the Immaculate Conception and Bodily Assumption to avoid errors and to properly understand the dignity of humanity given by God. Adam and Eve were conceived in the image and likeness of God without sin, that alone makes us understand true human dignity, but when a descendant of Adam and Eve (the Holy Virgin Mary) is to conceived the perfect image of God and not be "like" God but to actually be God brings human dignity to another level since we can be elevated to that status of the Sonship of God through baptism and keep it through confession and penance, thus it's proper to acknowledge the necessity of the immaculate conception and bodily assumption to avoid becoming a heretic (the importance of the body, the importance of the clean soul, and the dignity of Adam and the sons of Adam given by God restored by the New Adam and the New Eve namely Jesus Christ and the Holy Virgin Mary) Many gnostic heresies point to the body as an unclean thing and as something that we need to get rid of, yet the bodily assumption of the mother of the Son of God shows us that, that is not the case, the body is good because God created only good things... I could go on, but we NEED the immaculate conception and bodily assumption to be binding and not mere opinions, it's about ontological / metaphysical and theological principles that are True applied in reality.
I always felt it most important as a Catholic to concentrate more on proving the Eucharist and the magisterium which all other issues flow. Too many rabbit holes otherwise.
"EASTER" is found in the King James in Acts12:4 in place of the word "PASSOVER". Replaced with Passover in the newer versions. EASTER is a pagan fertility deity, why they have the rabbit and chicken on that day, known for fertility. Constantine made sure Easter and the Passover would never be on the same day. That Easter would always fall on a Sunday. This is one reason why we use the Pope Gregorian Calendar. Now dig this, In Acts 10:4 the King James has Easter where the word Passover should be. Easter was March 28, this year 2016, the Christian RESURRECTION DAY. Yet Passover by scriptures is the day the Messiah died and was put in the tomb. Then 3 nights and days later he was resurrected, a 72 hour span. Now check your calendars and you will find that this year the PASSOVER is APRIL 23. Does any Christain see something wrong with this picture in Christianity? After all Christians for the most part believe that he died on GOOD FRIDAY and was in the tomb for HOLY SATURDAY and resurrected on EASTER SUNDAY, a 36 hour span. Do any of you realize that Constantine made sure that the Passover and pagan Easter would never fall on the same day and that Easter would always be on a Sunday. The Jews would know when Passover is. So anytime you use the Easter week, you are taking part in a pagan festival. Just like the Last Supper was done once a year on Passover, not anytime someone wants to do it. Only the Spirit filled people took the Last Supper, anyone else was unworthy to take it.
Mary had to be without sin, she had to be. God could not enter into an impure source. Not a few Protestants are surprised to discover the Catholic Church actually agrees that Mary was “saved.” Indeed, Mary needed a savior! However, Mary was “saved” from sin in a most sublime manner. She was given the grace to be “saved” completely from sin so that she never committed even the slightest transgression. Protestants tend to emphasize God’s “salvation” almost exclusively to the forgiveness of sins actually committed. However, Sacred Scripture indicates that salvation can also refer to man being protected from sinning before the fact: Now to him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you without blemish before the presence of his glory with rejoicing, to the only God, our Savior through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and for ever. (Jude 24-25)
@gabri41200 God gives Christians grace all the time and people can fall out of this grace by gravely sinning. Free will. Adam and Eve had this grace before the fall, just like Christians, Adam and Eve chose to disobey, they fell from grace. Free will. Mary chose to be obedient.

A dad who loves and cares for his children will restrict their freedom for their own good, because they are ignorant, and the father knows best. For example, when i was a kid, my father, who i love greatly, prohibited me from walking at night in the street. He restricted my own free will to walk around, but i felt loved the same way because i knew my dad, and if he did this, it was a good thing, even though sometimes i wondered out of curiosity how was it like to walk alone out there. Furthermore, Adam and Eve both knew God personaly, and should know his infinite love. God shouldn't have given them such freedom to sin in the first place. God was watching while they were being fooled by the devil, and did nothing to stop them. Why? Imagine if my dad had simply left the door open at night, and while observing me leaving at night out of my curiosity, he didn't said anything. More than that, imagine if some stranger had offered me drugs, and my father, just watching, did nothing while seeing his little kid taking drugs. What kind of father is this? Sure, you could argue that in this situation, it was my fault to disobey my dad's order, but i would argue the opposite. As kids, we don't understand why it is wrong to disobey, and also our curiosity takes the best of us. It is the father's responsability to watch on their kids. Then you could argue that we are not kids, but you would be wrong. Adam and Eve, and all humanity are just kids compared to God. Even the wisest man alive is an infant compared to God. This is why it should be God's responsability to watch on his kids. But this is not the case is the bible's narrative. So God is an evil father, for letting his ignorant children doing whatever they want. You should doubt the love and grace of your God by simply reading Genesis. After being in the presence of God, Adam and Eve should have felt complete. Being in the presence of God, they shouldn't even think of anything else other than adoring God, and being in his love forever. Then why did they wandered through the woods, looking for fruits and talking to snakes? Why even bother with anything else when you have God in front of you? Why even need free will when you can just be complete, in eternal communion with God? Is the value of free will bigger than the value of God's presence?

And when Christians are tempted today we see that human nature is mostly still wrought with sin, but it's God's grace that makes us stronger, allows us to live a moral and virtuous life. And God allows the devil to tempt us not only to see that we are still sinful but temptation builds virtue. When you see the reality of what God did for mankind, what Christ does for peoples lives and what Christ offers in this life and what he offers in the next life, How much Christ really loves us, when you see that, then it will be the time on why I choose to follow Christ and love God in return. What most people miss, we are but dust and ashes, God is the creator of all you can see and including humans and offer this life to us as a gift, everything is a gift from God. As a so called protestant one who does appreciate the beauty of the catholic church I would say the epistle to the Colossians speaks massive amounts of wisdom and love. I would even say the back and forth between the churches today are just like the days of old when the coming together of the Gentiles and Jews.

I have seen many of your comments, you seem to have good intentions and are actively seeking, I was in a similar situation years ago. Once you realise that sola scriptura is self refuting and non sensical, it will fall into place. Jesus instituted one Church with the authority to bind and loose. If you keep approaching your search for the Apostolic Church with the mindset "where does it say that in scripture?" you have missed the structure of the ancient Church. Can you explain which books of the New Testament the Apostles and Disciples read out loud when they went out and started teaching? Did they not teach orally (Tradition).

@YAJUN YUAN That is a very peculiar position to hold my fellow Aussie, the apostles went out and preached the GOSPEL, the good news of Jesus, his death and resurrection, they didn't simply go out and read the Old Testament books to the people. They were doing this before Matthew, Mark, Luke and John even existed, thus teaching with oral tradition.
1:33:00 the GIRM and previous documents clearly state the model of sacred music. It limits instruments to those played by the bow (like violins) and those which imitate the human voice (so the flute and organ). The music to be played but be approved texts if it is a part of the Mass, hence...this is not quite accurate by Akin to say. Some music at mass is a grave matter, such as replacing the introit psalm with a matt maher song, this is adding text to the Mass which is illicit.
Can you please explain the "literal fire" thing again? ...because Mary showed the little children images of hell and when they described what they saw, it was hell fire burning souls and they could see the souls as persons and the persons were in such horrific anguish. Saint Faustina also saw such things. Saint John Bosco was also shown such things by an angel.
I'm not defending against the literal hellfire perspective here but just sharing a thought: There are beings or things in the spiritual realm that are hard to articulate in our earthly language since our descriptive language is based on physical reality. An example is the Most Holy Trinity sure we say God is three persons but one in being. That's the best our human language can do but we cant explain this fully using earthy descriptions. Could the same be for other things in the spiritual realm? Jesus when speaking about hell compared it to the fires of Gehena which some scholars say was a large garbage heap in a valley in Jerusalem where there were constant fires burning rubbish. It could be possible in this view to say maybe the burning in fire is a way of explaining a spiritual pain that our earthly words have no other way of explaining. Maybe the saints to since they are not in glorified bodies nor do they have beatific vision when they see these visions they understand them from an earthly perspective

After reading Luke 1:26 onward from the duoay rheims i ran into the embrace of Our Lady so quickly and couldn’t hold back from venerating her. It dawned on me that the Angel Gabriel Hail’d Mary when he told her the lord is with thee. But more than that. Angels aren’t just saying what comes to mind, they are Gods messenger. So it was God who first hailed Mary and made it known to her that he was with her. This is before Christs salvation for man. The potency of this wasn’t lost on me anymore. If our Lord made it an important point for it to be known that He hails Mary, at that time, before Christs birth then for me to also not Hail Mary is actually against Gods own will. It’s blasphemous to not hail the Blessed Virgin and this apples even for those within Sola Scriptura, though in compassion , their modernised bibles as re-worded by many Protestants really skew the clarity of this moment.

I somewhat disagree on the music choices for worship. First, someone made the choice to use the music someone else finds repulsive. Was that a priest, a church board of directors? Did they research how many parishioners wouldn't like it, how many would leave and how many newcomers they would lose? What were the reasons for this choice: personal preference, shaming, contemporary culture, poor music education? Is it worth the change? Did they care to understand why someone doesn't like it, or did they just invalidated and dismiss their concerns? Maybe there are deeply spiritual and significant reasons for why they don't like it. And maybe you better listen. Maybe it's a symptom of something no one yet understands. It's not a matter of personal taste, it's a matter of divine truth and beauty and those who strive to get as close to it as possible in their worship vs the perversion of it. Musical styles that started as a perversion of the true and the beautiful will retain this perversion even if you change the lyrics to praise Jesus and play it in church. Music is never just a sound, it always, always effects us on a deeper level, on the spiritual level, even if we don't recognize and don't believe in the spiritual. Don't misunderstand me, this is different than what Catholic church did with incorporating into worship honest melodies and instruments of the ethnic people to whom they preached. The whole point is to take something people know and orient it toward God. That is to say that an electric guitar shouldn't be disallowed in church. It's how you use it. If you use it to create a heavenly sound that draws people of all musical tastes closer to God, by all means do it. If your electric guitar music sends people running out of the church holding their ears, you are doing it wrong. I am tired of hearing people dismiss ugliness and perversions as just not your taste, not your thing, but it's ok. It's not ok. FYI, I am an academically trained artist and my husband is a retired professional musician who worked in a variety of music styles from classical symphonies and opera to rock n roll and jazz, he arranged music and conducted for Don Ho and Connie Stevens, he worked for Mo Town West and can be heard playing trumpet on many hit records. Most of my music education comes from him. He will never set foot into a church that has a modern band. He knows too much about where these music styles originated and the people who originated them and how they did so.
I like all different kinds of genre of music, but at mass I personally think that it should be reverent music. Even Vatican ii says it. It even encourages Gregorian as ideal music to be used for liturgy, which it was the only reason gregorian music was created and it is to worship God. I think the document also says compositions or styles of music whose origins are secular are not apropiate with the holiness and dignity of the place. The music must be made specifically for the liturgy and aproved. About instruments I think it doesnt specify which ones are aproved. But it says it must be aproved first. I know organ is aproved. I think some priest dont know this or ignore it, thats why there is so much liturgical abuse. Specially in hispanic comunities. Gregorian or chant might not be peoples taste , But the question here is what's appropriate for the liturgy, not what suits our personal tastes. If people cant chant or sing Gregorian style the least they should play is reverent music. Like Matt said we arent going to have a mass with rock and roll or rap, or salsa. Yeah I’ve always had a problem with the music aspect too. But Jimmy had some good points about the availability of musicians in localities. I donated a set of drums to a parish once. Even though I played drums, I told them I was not a fan of drums in a mass, but I can’t stand listening to that crappy drum set you’re using anymore, take mine. lol Somehow we gotta get back to reverent masses. Music really is important. My husband is a French organist and while working in France he never got to choose the music and whoever was in charge always chose some weird Christian pop thing. Didn’t sound good on an a magnificent organ, but it wasn’t better in a keyboard either. The songs were too similar and often the text didn’t fit the melody. We live in another country now where he chooses the music. He has a bunch to choose from so he goes by the texts of the days. When he has a priest that loves Latin, he goes Gregorian. When they want something simple he goes for something different. This has made him grow as a musician. And the books with all the hymns and mass are available at the entrance. With notes btw so even if you are new you can still sing along.

I don’t struggle with Marian dogmas….. I wrestle with the “Church approved” appearances and what came to follow. I see many Marian devotions getting excessive and borderline distracting. For example I hear more discussion day to day about her than Jesus from some folk on sundays. Obsessive prayer. Regarding finding Marian teachings a hindrance to conversion: I converted to Catholicism over the course of ten years' study and prayer, from a Protestant upbringing. I received so much anti-Catholic messaging when I was growing up that I still haven't unwired it all, and possibly won't this side of the next life, even though I have assented to the teachings of the church with my intellect and will. So there is still something of the flavor of Catholicism that feels strange to me from time to time, almost twenty years after I officially joined the church and made my first Communion. It's as if I'll always speak the language with an accent. I would just say to others contemplating conversion that if you see a glimmer of the efficacy of the sacraments, acknowledge the potency of apostolic succession, and recognize that the Bible and Christian praxis were safeguarded by Catholics for 1500 years, before Protestantism arrived on the scene--then know you can trust the Church with your being.

Trent Horn very effectively rebutted Pastor Mike Wingers anti Catholic screed. Mike Winger is guilty of bearing false witness which is a violation of the 9th commandment and a mortal sin. Unfortunately Mike Winger being a fundamentalist has no way to be absolved of a mortal sin since fundamentalists don’t have the Sacrament of Reconciliation. You can confess directly to God but you have to have perfect contrition which means you can’t have any attachment to sin whatsoever, either mortal or venial otherwise your sin remains. That is what Protestants are up against when they commit post baptismal mortal sins without the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
Winger said that people receive the Eucharist to get rid of their mortal sins or something to that effect. Receiving the Eucharist in a state of mortal sin is itself a mortal sin and not only doesn’t get rid of mortal sin but as Saint Paul said it is “Eating and drinking judgement on yourself.” You must go to confession first if you are in a state of mortal sin before receiving the Eucharist.

There are so many publishers all claim their bible is true word of God but which one speaks the truth. Did Jesus command Martin Luther, King James to publish the Bible in the scripture?

However I no longer view scripture as the only basis for church doctrine. I have heard many wrong ideas spring from misinterpretation of the Bible. I thank God for leading me to the Catholic church.

1:28:15 - I appreciated his response to the question of how the Mass is sometimes celebrated with non-traditional accompaniments, like music played with instruments from different cultures etc. The Latin phrase he mentioned, "de gustibus non est disputandum" (do not dispute about matters of taste), encapsulated the situation well.
To use the Aristotelian terminology, matters of taste would be accidents rather than substances with regards to the validity of the Mass, and therefore not grounds for evaluating its authenticity (and I say this as one who much rather prefers the traditional approach - timelessness over novelty seems more appropriate for the worship of the one eternal God)

You should know there are Christian patristics scholars (and more of them-not that their numbers matter) who are not Roman Catholics and they’re not dummies that simply misunderstand what the fathers taught.

If one were to study Church History & read the Early Church Fathers with a non-biased lens, you will have no choice but to be Catholic. They point to the papacy, the chair of Peter in Rome, the Eucharist, bishops, Apostolic succession, the priesthood, Mary, etc.
They don’t point in any direction towards 16th century Protestantism or Orthodoxy.

Studying Church history demonstrates that the Church Christ established has had philosophical & theological developments that help us understand the faith more clearly from 2,000 years ago. This can easily be seen by reading the Seven Ecumenical Councils-which show the development of how the Church has had to defend core doctrines throughout Church history from heresy & attacks.
I think it is proper that there are later developments & understandings of Christianity after 2,000 years, which can be articulated by the Church in the Catechism. Through faith & *reason* Catholics are able to strongly defend & articulate the faith to nonbelievers, Orthodox Christians or Protestant Christians.

@YAJUN YUAN Yes, some Church Fathers have had differing understandings of the Eucharist but majority believed the very literal meaning as seen in John 6, when thousands of disciples left Jesus over this teaching & literal language. Remember, Jesus did not correct the disciples (who decided to leave him over this teaching) instead, Jesus emphasized the teaching more literally.
Next, our ability to reason through the literal language of Christ in John 6 can point us in the direction that majority of Church Fathers (who believed in the literal sense) are correct over the few minority, who believed the Eucharist only as a sole spiritual sense.
Also, some of the Church Fathers who you assert provided a symbolic sense may be interpreted as the literal sense. Let’s use Augustine for an example.

People who abandon the Catholic Church when a pope is bad need first, to read history: we've had bad popes before and the Church has been preserved, so you're not special having to live during a time when the pope is bad. Second, if you leave the church because the pope is bad, you also need to leave your country when the president is bad; you need to become an anarchist and reject all laws when a police chief or judge is corrupt; you need to pull your kids out of school completely if you find out that a teacher is bad or an abuser; you need to quit your job if your boss is an immoral buffoon; you need to stop driving a car if you find out that a driving instructor broke a traffic law. We don't judge an institution by the people who FAIL to live up to the mission and ideals of the institution; we judge the institution by the mission and ideals of the institution. Otherwise, we all have to say, 'I'm quitting Christianity because Judas betrayed Jesus, so Jesus couldn't have been God or none of his apostles would have betrayed him.' The Apostles - like all of us, including popes - are FREE and we can break the rules. It doesn't mean that the rules are wrong and should be thrown out.

@YAJUN YUAN Blasphemy is not a form of heresy. Heresy means holding some wrong doctrine instead of the true one. Blasphemy means speaking against someone or something, usually God, in a sacreligious way. So one can blaspheme and still be orthodox. Just as they can commit other sins and still hold that the orthodox faith is true.

Matt & Jimmy, I’d like to point out that the Catholic bishops did publish a booklet on liturgical music called, “Sing to the Lord: Music in Divine Worship” (3rd edition) that includes guidelines, suggestions and a couple of hard rules (such as not using recorded music for Mass). As a long time liturgical musician and cantor (and old rock n roller) I found it very helpful.

The Mystery of Iniquity
It has ever been the design of Satan to draw the minds of the people from Jesus to man, and to destroy individual accountability. Satan failed in his design when he tempted the Son of God; but he succeeded better when he came to fallen man. Christianity became corrupted. Popes and priests presumed to take an exalted position, and taught the people to look to them for the pardon of their sins, instead of looking to Christ for themselves.
The people were wholly deceived. They were taught that the popes and priests were Christ’s representatives, when in fact they were the representatives of Satan, and those who bowed to them worshiped Satan. The people called for the Bible; but the priests considered it dangerous to let them have it to read for themselves, lest they should become enlightened and expose the sins of their leaders. The people were taught to receive every word from these deceivers as from the mouth of God. They held that power over the mind which God alone should hold. If any dared to follow their own convictions, the same hate which Satan and the Jews exercised toward Jesus would be kindled against them, and those in authority would thirst for their blood.
I was shown a time when Satan especially triumphed. Multitudes of Christians were slain in a dreadful manner, because they would preserve the purity of their religion. The Bible was hated, and efforts were made to rid the earth of it. The people were forbidden to read it, on pain of death; and all the copies which could be found were burned. But I saw that God had a special care for His Word. He protected it. At different periods there were but a very few copies of the Bible in existence, yet He would not suffer His Word to be lost, for in the last days copies of it were to be so multiplied that every family could possess it. I saw that when there were but few copies of the Bible, it was precious and comforting to the persecuted followers of Jesus. It was read in the most secret manner, and those who had this exalted privilege felt that they had had an interview with God, with His Son Jesus, and with His disciples. But this blessed privilege cost many of them their lives. If discovered, they were taken to the headsman’s block, to the stake, or to the dungeon to die of starvation.
Satan could not hinder the plan of salvation. Jesus was crucified, and rose again the third day. But Satan told his angels that he would make the crucifixion and resurrection tell to his advantage. He was willing that those who professed faith in Jesus should believe that the laws regulating the Jewish sacrifices and offerings ceased at the death of Christ, if he could push them farther and make them believe that the law of ten commandments also died with Christ.
I saw that many readily yielded to this device of Satan. All heaven was moved with indignation as they saw the holy law of God trampled underfoot. Jesus and all the heavenly host were acquainted with the nature of God’s law; they knew that He would not change or abrogate it. The hopeless condition of man after the fall caused the deepest sorrow in heaven, and moved Jesus to offer to die for the transgressors of God’s holy law. But if that law could be abrogated, man might have been saved without the death of Jesus. Consequently His death did not destroy the law of His Father, but magnified and honored it and enforced obedience to all its holy precepts.
Had the church remained pure and steadfast, Satan could not have deceived them, and led them to trample on the law of God. In this bold plan, Satan strikes directly against the foundation of God’s government in heaven and on earth. His rebellion caused him to be expelled from heaven. After he rebelled, in order to save himself he wished God to change His law, but was told before the whole heavenly host that God’s law was unalterable. Satan knows that if he can cause others to violate God’s law, he has gained them to his cause; for every transgressor of that law must die.
Satan decided to go still farther. He told his angels that some would be so jealous of God’s law that they could not be caught in this snare; the ten commandments were so plain that many would believe that they were still binding, and therefore he must seek to corrupt only one of the commandments. He then led on his representatives to attempt to change the fourth, or Sabbath, commandment, thus altering the only one of the ten which brings to view the true God, the Maker of the heavens and the earth. Satan presented before them the glorious resurrection of Jesus, and told them that by His rising on the first day of the week, He changed the Sabbath from the seventh to the first day of the week.
Thus Satan used the resurrection to serve his purpose. He and his angels rejoiced that the errors they had prepared took so well with the professed friends of Christ. What one looked upon with religious horror, another would receive. Thus different errors were received and defended with zeal. The will of God, so plainly revealed in His Word, was covered up with errors and traditions, which have been taught as the commandments of God. Although this heaven-daring deception will be suffered to be carried on until the second appearing of Jesus, yet through all this time of error and deception, God has not been left without witnesses. Amid the darkness and persecution of the church there have always been true and faithful ones who kept all of God’s commandments.
I saw that the angelic host were filled with amazement as they beheld the sufferings and death of the King of glory. But I saw that it was no marvel to them that the Lord of life and glory, He who filled all heaven with joy and splendor, should break the bands of death, and walk forth from His prison house, a triumphant conqueror. Therefore, if either of these events should be commemorated by a day of rest, it is the crucifixion. But I saw that neither of these events was designed to alter or abrogate God’s law; on the contrary, they give the strongest proof of its immutability.
Both of these important events have their memorials. By partaking of the Lord’s supper, the broken bread and the fruit of the vine, we show forth the Lord’s death until He comes. The scenes of His sufferings and death are thus brought fresh to our minds. The resurrection of Christ is commemorated by our being buried with Him by baptism, and raised out of the watery grave, in likeness of His resurrection, to live in newness of life.
I was shown that the law of God would stand fast forever, and exist in the new earth to all eternity. At the creation, when the foundations of the earth were laid, the sons of God looked with admiration upon the work of the Creator, and all the heavenly host shouted for joy. It was then that the foundation of the Sabbath was laid. At the close of the six days of creation, God rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had made; and He blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because that in it He had rested from all His work. The Sabbath was instituted in Eden before the fall, and was observed by Adam and Eve, and all the heavenly host. God rested on the seventh day, and blessed and hallowed it. I saw that the Sabbath never will be done away; but that the redeemed saints, and all the angelic host, will observe it in honor of the great Creator to all eternity.
It’s amazing how purgatory and hell perfectly describe my walk through life and in the moments I’ve touched heaven, so serene was its peace and majesty, I did not even realize I was there. I’m convinced I have had moments of walking in the garden my whole life but can never realize when I’m in his perfect presence. I can only recognize my fall, when I’m out of its walled beauty.

I liked the comment about taste. Makes me feel better. I like our 7 am mass because there is no music or singing. It is quiet and peaceful. Sometimes I felt I was wrong for not liking the music in mass. I am a big rock guy. A Tool song actually got me to go to an ACT's retreat and repatriated me to the Church. "Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability To lift an eye to heaven, conscious of his fleeting time here" hit me like a ton of bricks even though I have heard it a 100 times before. I couldn't shake the lyric, signed up, and started working to change my life. The retreat was healing a thousand times over. I highly encourage all to attend.
Just a little correction not every country has a single head of state. Andorra for example is a co-Principality, many countries have both a prime minister and a president, and Bosnia and Herzegovina actually has 3 different leaders. Not to mention Switzerland has a whole council
Great discussion! First time I hear Jimmy Akin’s apologetics. Many of his points really hit some solid home runs, but some points I felt lacked enough strength to stand alone in defense of some big objections, like papal infallibility and the Marian dogmas. Perhaps the setting of this discussion did not provide ample space to peel these topics satisfactorily, but I have heard stronger arguments on these from the likes of Madrid, Horn, Hahn, and the Word on Fire team.
On the topic of music which I found very interesting.. I used to live in a predominantly southern Baptist and evangelical black community, and attended the only Catholic Church right smack dab in the middle of this town. Most of its parishioners were Catholic converts from one of these other southern Christian denominations. The entire liturgical musical composition was in the style of Gospel Choir. So the Gloria, Lamb of God, the Great Amen, etc were all sang by a large group of gospel choir artists and a single pianist, and it was absolutely beautiful! Masses were 1.5 hours long, in large part because of the music, but it was one of the most beautiful and uplifting parishes I had ever been a part of. The processions at the beginning and end of the mass were just explosive with everyone across the pews clapping, singing, and dancing.. to say that hardly ANYONE left church before the priest processed out of the altar i think speaks volumes of how effective it’s musical energy was. God bless Fr. John who pastored this flock, I truly believe his leadership and his decision to interweave the culture of this region with the Catholic liturgy was part of what helped convert so many people there to Catholicism.

In my experience there’s a bunch of these community “pockets” all over Florida, when I lived there several years ago I found an apartment in a small quiet predominantly black baptist town south of Tampa bay. Met some amazing people and built great memories there. I completed my RCIA there in that parish, which by the way those classes were PACKED. People were converting to Catholicism in swarms. The priest there Fr John was the only priest running that church. He had no vicars or deacons, he presided all masses and co-led RCIA with a lay spiritual director. Whenever he was out of pocket there was a retired Franciscan friar who occasionally filled in for him. Overworked and all, he still ran such a lively parish and led his flock very effectively.

Great comment, it reminded me of a book I stumbled across years ago called "Why Catholics Can't Sing" by Thomas Day. It was an engaging account of the author's frustrations with how liturgical music was handled by many parishes these days (it seems yours is an outlier!), and his resultant efforts and experiences in researching and understanding how this current state of affairs was arrived at. I found it to be humorous and informative, as well as appropriately tongue-in-cheek, and though it may be difficult to source I'd recommend as a good read.

The fact that not one single place on the face of this earth claims to have any relic of Mary tells you all you need to now. Everyone would've known who she was at that time, people would've known if/when she died, where she would've been buried and would've used it as an attraction. The answer is just that simple

I just love Jimmy. Also, my husband and I are church musicians and I appreciate the latitude for our 'creative vision' 😅 But for us, we strive to think first about what would be the most fitting for the church/ community for which we are playing. But yes we definitely have to choose from the hymns and songs we play well.

As regards to believing "everything" before becoming Catholic, remember St. Peter did not understand what Jesus was talking about when He said, "eat my body, drink my blood". Peter answered "Lord, you have the words to eternal life"; he didn't say he understood, just that he knew He (Jesus) was the real Messiah; likewise, you may not understand why the Church teaches what she does, but she is the True Church.
I think there is beauty in the trust of God with what we cannot fathom yet. It's not about knowing it all, it's about being obedient to what we know and our obedience must always be aimed at Christ and not our own pride. That's why many protestants can't accept what the church teaches in many regards. Once you really become open and do your research, a door to more knowledge will open that humbles you even more and sets the demand for even more trust of God to learn even more in the future.

On the point about the church being against contraception when it helps to prevent abortions, I would argue that despite the surface level reasoning, deep down the opposite is true, that contraception (and the mentality it fosters) is really a fuel for abortion. The mindset is the same: not wanting to procreate while engaging in the act meant for procreation, so you cut off the possibility of a child that you would be responsible for. When the contraceptives couples use intending to avoid pregnancy fail as they sometimes do, lo there is a pregnancy they didnt intend to have, and many go for the “backup method.” It’s not a coincidence that 50% of women who abort were on contraceptives at the time they got pregnant according to Guttmacher. There is also good correlation between the increase of contraceptives and failed marriages since the 60’s. Humani Generis section 17 is prophetic.
To add to your point, some contraceptives don't prevent conception but prevent the fertilized egg from implanting by making the uteral lining chemically inhospitable to it. The reason there are 50% of abortions are among "on the pill" women is because they lowered the level of hormones in "the pill" as the evidence of bad side effects for previously higher levels was beginning to increase. They think they are taking a pill to prevent life from starting, instead they feed the spirit of death. The more you feed it the more monstrous it gets. The whole culture has involved to depend on a pill to fix all problems.

There is a scientific reason for the assumption as well. The old Testament says none of the Messiah's body will see corruption. I.e. decay. Microchimerism is the process whereby a few of the baby's cells are always found inside a mother for the rest of her life. Therefore, if she is decaying after death, then his cells are as well. Hence a small reason for the Assumption of Mary.
That is SO interesting. I had never heard of microchimerism before, but I looked into this and it makes a lot of sense.

I believe it is acceptable to dance and clap in the church community hall, but I think it is inappropriate at the front of the altar where the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is said. Did not God tell Moses to take off his sandles before stepping on Holy ground? There is a time and a place for everything. The Altar and church in general should be respected.
Your comment would justify taking off your shoes in church, not against dancing or clapping. Remember David danced in front of the Ark.

Am a protestant, born and raised:
I am an (amateur) student of literature, language, and the ideas communicated through both. I have specifically enjoyed following ideas from their origins in pure practice (agriculture, familial economy, social ties, etc) in the prehistoric world into their first stories in the age of oral tradition, and then into the more accessible world of literature. Have found Eliade and similar scholars hugely beneficial in understanding complex religious ideas. One doctrine of Catholicism I have come to wholly accept was the Mary tradition, merely because from a story perspective, if God incarnate is a man, there would need to be a holy feminine to produce that in the real world. Infants without mothers don’t become people, as we will soon learn when we try artificial wombs.
That very long speech was to set up the following realization I have just come to, and will almost certainly be the last stepping stone in my own journey to the Church.
The death of Mary in the Protestant church not only caused women to become imitators of men. (as the image of holy Feminine was gone), but it caused the pho-feminization (“toxic femininity” to borrow an awful colloquialism) of the church structure, and resulting Exodus of men from the church. The sheer masculine calling in the Catholic Church is predicated on its awareness of the divine feminine in the person of Mary. I am sure my prose is theological refuse, but I am a humble man of literature.
Nice approach. But I would not use "holy feminine" as a term for Mary, because it equates her with the gnostic understanding of a god duality.
But Mary sure is a role model, not only for women. Actually, she is our mother, someone to look up to and ask to help us be more like Jesus.
The saints, actually, are the role models more close to us. But the Protestant churches at large have also dumped the teaching on communion of the saints in favour of the idea of the sleeping dead.

Not sure if I agree with the point at about 1:55 min. on the various "expressions" of the mass. If some variation encourages deeper devotion and greater piety, then it's reasonable to be open minded. But if the form of "expression" is clearly becoming THE focus (a previous parish I was in had a band with horns, drums, electric guitar and more) and reverence is lost in favor of what feels like entertainment, then has it crossed the line? If the congregation is applauding after songs or "skit's", that could be a sign to slow down and take stock. It can't all be on the back of the parishioners to accept anything that happens on the alter. Where is the pastors responsibility to celebrate the mass in a way that is holy and enriching for the parishioners and shows great reverence for the central purpose... the eucharist?
I live in an area that has limited access to Mass. We do not have a skilled choir. More bad notes than good. We still try. It is what it is. The great thing is that every seat if filled with people of tremendous faith who are there doing our public work and duty celebrating the Lord's Day.
Please do an entire episode on Marian dogma with Jimmy! I get a lot of questions about her being ever virgin and don’t quite know what to say.

We need the Immaculate Conception and Bodily Assumption to avoid errors and to properly understand the dignity of humanity given by God. Adam and Eve were conceived in the image and likeness of God without sin, that alone makes us understand true human dignity, but when a descendant of Adam and Eve (the Holy Virgin Mary) is to conceived the perfect image of God and not be "like" God but to actually be God brings human dignity to another level since we can be elevated to that status of the Sonship of God through baptism and keep it through confession and penance, thus it's proper to acknowledge the necessity of the immaculate conception and bodily assumption to avoid becoming a heretic (the importance of the body, the importance of the clean soul, and the dignity of Adam and the sons of Adam given by God restored by the New Adam and the New Eve namely Jesus Christ and the Holy Virgin Mary) Many gnostic heresies point to the body as an unclean thing and as something that we need to get rid of, yet the bodily assumption of the mother of the Son of God shows us that, that is not the case, the body is good because God created only good things... I could go on, but we NEED the immaculate conception and bodily assumption to be binding and not mere opinions, it's about ontological / metaphysical and theological principles that are True applied in reality.

I always felt it most important as a Catholic to concentrate more on proving the Eucharist and the magisterium which all other issues flow. Too many rabbit holes otherwise.
"EASTER" is found in the King James in Acts12:4 in place of the word "PASSOVER". Replaced with Passover in the newer versions.
EASTER is a pagan fertility deity, why they have the rabbit and chicken on that day, known for fertility.
Constantine made sure Easter and the Passover would never be on the same day.
That Easter would always fall on a Sunday.
This is one reason why we use the Pope Gregorian Calendar.
Now dig this, In Acts 10:4 the King James has Easter where the word Passover should be. Easter was March 28, this year 2016, the Christian RESURRECTION DAY. Yet Passover by scriptures is the day the Messiah died and was put in the tomb. Then 3 nights and days later he was resurrected, a 72 hour span. Now check your calendars and you will find that this year the PASSOVER is APRIL 23. Does any Christain see something wrong with this picture in Christianity? After all Christians for the most part believe that he died on GOOD FRIDAY and was in the tomb for HOLY SATURDAY and resurrected on EASTER SUNDAY, a 36 hour span. Do any of you realize that Constantine made sure that the Passover and pagan Easter would never fall on the same day and that Easter would always be on a Sunday. The Jews would know when Passover is. So anytime you use the Easter week, you are taking part in a pagan festival. Just like the Last Supper was done once a year on Passover, not anytime someone wants to do it. Only the Spirit filled people took the Last Supper, anyone else was unworthy to take it.
That can’t be the only focus since many people have misconception of ... just about everything else about Catholicism

Mary had to be without sin, she had to be.
God could not enter into an impure source.
Not a few Protestants are surprised to discover the Catholic Church actually agrees that Mary was “saved.” Indeed, Mary needed a savior! However, Mary was “saved” from sin in a most sublime manner. She was given the grace to be “saved” completely from sin so that she never committed even the slightest transgression. Protestants tend to emphasize God’s “salvation” almost exclusively to the forgiveness of sins actually committed. However, Sacred Scripture indicates that salvation can also refer to man being protected from sinning before the fact:
Now to him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you without blemish before the presence of his glory with rejoicing, to the only God, our Savior through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and for ever. (Jude 24-25)
If God can give such graces, then why didn't God gave this grace to Adam and Eve? Protecting them, and by consequence, all humanity from sin?

God gives Christians grace all the time and people can fall out of this grace by gravely sinning. Free will.
Adam and Eve had this grace before the fall, just like Christians, Adam and Eve chose to disobey, they fell from grace. Free will.
Mary chose to be obedient.

A dad who loves and cares for his children will restrict their freedom for their own good, because they are ignorant, and the father knows best. For example, when i was a kid, my father, who i love greatly, prohibited me from walking at night in the street. He restricted my own free will to walk around, but i felt loved the same way because i knew my dad, and if he did this, it was a good thing, even though sometimes i wondered out of curiosity how was it like to walk alone out there.
Furthermore, Adam and Eve both knew God personaly, and should know his infinite love. God shouldn't have given them such freedom to sin in the first place. God was watching while they were being fooled by the devil, and did nothing to stop them. Why? Imagine if my dad had simply left the door open at night, and while observing me leaving at night out of my curiosity, he didn't said anything. More than that, imagine if some stranger had offered me drugs, and my father, just watching, did nothing while seeing his little kid taking drugs. What kind of father is this?
Sure, you could argue that in this situation, it was my fault to disobey my dad's order, but i would argue the opposite. As kids, we don't understand why it is wrong to disobey, and also our curiosity takes the best of us. It is the father's responsability to watch on their kids. Then you could argue that we are not kids, but you would be wrong. Adam and Eve, and all humanity are just kids compared to God. Even the wisest man alive is an infant compared to God. This is why it should be God's responsability to watch on his kids. But this is not the case is the bible's narrative. So God is an evil father, for letting his ignorant children doing whatever they want.
You should doubt the love and grace of your God by simply reading Genesis. After being in the presence of God, Adam and Eve should have felt complete. Being in the presence of God, they shouldn't even think of anything else other than adoring God, and being in his love forever. Then why did they wandered through the woods, looking for fruits and talking to snakes? Why even bother with anything else when you have God in front of you? Why even need free will when you can just be complete, in eternal communion with God? Is the value of free will bigger than the value of God's presence?

But now that the fall happened with Adam and Eve and all humans are born with a original sin, What does this Father (God) do to make it so that our relationship with God is restored like before.
He sends his son Jesus, hard to understand, God in the flesh, God becomes human without sin to be the ultimate sacrifice, Jesus becomes the ultimate sacrfice, Jesus knows no sin but becomes a sin offering and not only does God show us his love by sending his son to die a cruel and horrible death but Jesus conquers sin, death and the devil for all those who decide to follow him.
And it's our human sin that put Jesus on the cross.
But God loved mankind so much that he was willing to show how much he loves us even though God doesn't need us, loves us so much he decided to send his son for reparation that our human sin killed Christ.
The devil existed and the devil still exists today, and if it wasn't for Christ's sacrifice we would still be property of the devil, but Christ conquered sin and death and the devil.
And when Christians are tempted today we see that human nature is mostly still wrought with sin, but it's God's grace that makes us stronger, allows us to live a moral and virtuous life.
And God allows the devil to tempt us not only to see that we are still sinful but temptation builds virtue.
When you see the reality of what God did for mankind, what Christ does for peoples lives and what Christ offers in this life and what he offers in the next life, How much Christ really loves us, when you see that, then it will be the time on why I choose to follow Christ and love God in return.
What most people miss, we are but dust and ashes, God is the creator of all you can see and including humans and offer this life to us as a gift, everything is a gift from God.

As a so called protestant one who does appreciate the beauty of the catholic church I would say the epistle to the Colossians speaks massive amounts of wisdom and love. I would even say the back and forth between the churches today are just like the days of old when the coming together of the Gentiles and Jews.

I have seen many of your comments, you seem to have good intentions and are actively seeking, I was in a similar situation years ago. Once you realise that sola scriptura is self refuting and non sensical, it will fall into place. Jesus instituted one Church with the authority to bind and loose. If you keep approaching your search for the Apostolic Church with the mindset "where does it say that in scripture?" you have missed the structure of the ancient Church. Can you explain which books of the New Testament the Apostles and Disciples read out loud when they went out and started teaching? Did they not teach orally (Tradition).

@YAJUN YUAN That is a very peculiar position to hold my fellow Aussie, the apostles went out and preached the GOSPEL, the good news of Jesus, his death and resurrection, they didn't simply go out and read the Old Testament books to the people. They were doing this before Matthew, Mark, Luke and John even existed, thus teaching with oral tradition.

It limits instruments to those played by the bow (like violins) and those which imitate the human voice (so the flute and organ). The music to be played but be approved texts if it is a part of the Mass, hence...this is not quite accurate by Akin to say. Some music at mass is a grave matter, such as replacing the introit psalm with a matt maher song, this is adding text to the Mass which is illicit.
Also, as for "vain repetition", our Lord literally teaches the disciples how to pray the 'Our Father' right after.

Can you please explain the "literal fire" thing again? ...because Mary showed the little children images of hell and when they described what they saw, it was hell fire burning souls and they could see the souls as persons and the persons were in such horrific anguish. Saint Faustina also saw such things. Saint John Bosco was also shown such things by an angel.
I'm not defending against the literal hellfire perspective here but just sharing a thought:
There are beings or things in the spiritual realm that are hard to articulate in our earthly language since our descriptive language is based on physical reality. An example is the Most Holy Trinity sure we say God is three persons but one in being. That's the best our human language can do but we cant explain this fully using earthy descriptions.
Could the same be for other things in the spiritual realm? Jesus when speaking about hell compared it to the fires of Gehena which some scholars say was a large garbage heap in a valley in Jerusalem where there were constant fires burning rubbish.
It could be possible in this view to say maybe the burning in fire is a way of explaining a spiritual pain that our earthly words have no other way of explaining.
Maybe the saints to since they are not in glorified bodies nor do they have beatific vision when they see these visions they understand them from an earthly perspective

After reading Luke 1:26 onward from the duoay rheims i ran into the embrace of Our Lady so quickly and couldn’t hold back from venerating her.
It dawned on me that the Angel Gabriel Hail’d Mary when he told her the lord is with thee. But more than that. Angels aren’t just saying what comes to mind, they are Gods messenger. So it was God who first hailed Mary and made it known to her that he was with her. This is before Christs salvation for man. The potency of this wasn’t lost on me anymore. If our Lord made it an important point for it to be known that He hails Mary, at that time, before Christs birth then for me to also not Hail Mary is actually against Gods own will. It’s blasphemous to not hail the Blessed Virgin and this apples even for those within Sola Scriptura, though in compassion , their modernised bibles as re-worded by many Protestants really skew the clarity of this moment.

I somewhat disagree on the music choices for worship. First, someone made the choice to use the music someone else finds repulsive. Was that a priest, a church board of directors? Did they research how many parishioners wouldn't like it, how many would leave and how many newcomers they would lose? What were the reasons for this choice: personal preference, shaming, contemporary culture, poor music education? Is it worth the change? Did they care to understand why someone doesn't like it, or did they just invalidated and dismiss their concerns? Maybe there are deeply spiritual and significant reasons for why they don't like it. And maybe you better listen. Maybe it's a symptom of something no one yet understands.
It's not a matter of personal taste, it's a matter of divine truth and beauty and those who strive to get as close to it as possible in their worship vs the perversion of it. Musical styles that started as a perversion of the true and the beautiful will retain this perversion even if you change the lyrics to praise Jesus and play it in church. Music is never just a sound, it always, always effects us on a deeper level, on the spiritual level, even if we don't recognize and don't believe in the spiritual.
Don't misunderstand me, this is different than what Catholic church did with incorporating into worship honest melodies and instruments of the ethnic people to whom they preached. The whole point is to take something people know and orient it toward God. That is to say that an electric guitar shouldn't be disallowed in church. It's how you use it. If you use it to create a heavenly sound that draws people of all musical tastes closer to God, by all means do it. If your electric guitar music sends people running out of the church holding their ears, you are doing it wrong.
I am tired of hearing people dismiss ugliness and perversions as just not your taste, not your thing, but it's ok. It's not ok.
FYI, I am an academically trained artist and my husband is a retired professional musician who worked in a variety of music styles from classical symphonies and opera to rock n roll and jazz, he arranged music and conducted for Don Ho and Connie Stevens, he worked for Mo Town West and can be heard playing trumpet on many hit records. Most of my music education comes from him. He will never set foot into a church that has a modern band. He knows too much about where these music styles originated and the people who originated them and how they did so.

I think the document also says compositions or styles of music whose origins are secular are not apropiate with the holiness and dignity of the place.
The music must be made specifically for the liturgy and aproved.
About instruments I think it doesnt specify which ones are aproved. But it says it must be aproved first.

I think some priest dont know this or ignore it, thats why there is so much liturgical abuse. Specially in hispanic comunities.
Gregorian or chant might not be peoples taste , But the question here is what's appropriate for the liturgy, not what suits our personal tastes.
If people cant chant or sing Gregorian style the least they should play is reverent music.
Like Matt said we arent going to have a mass with rock and roll or rap, or salsa.
That to me personally is not showing reverence to God and because the councils says so and it makes sense.

Do you mean you get some type of pleasure and satisfaction from listening or do you in addition to pleasure appreciate the complexity, the artistry, the musicians' skillfulness, the ingenious new beats and the unexpected and unpredictable cord changes? Then, What do you mean by "like all kinds of genre?" Can someone's likes be as widely varied as from Rap to Classical music? You probably draw the line somewhere. If so, where and why? Yeah I’ve always had a problem with the music aspect too.
But Jimmy had some good points about the availability of musicians in localities.
I donated a set of drums to a parish once. Even though I played drums, I told them I was not a fan of drums in a mass, but I can’t stand listening to that crappy drum set you’re using anymore, take mine. lol
Somehow we gotta get back to reverent masses. We’re not going to find holiness in modern pop styles of music. Holy = that which is set apart.

Now when I listen Catholic christian music (non liturgical) I feel different because I focus more on the message rather than beat, rythm,chord etc.

I play guitar and piano im not the best at it but I can play a few songs. I was learning to play violin. I was also learning to play drums as well.

Music really is important. My husband is a French organist and while working in France he never got to choose the music and whoever was in charge always chose some weird Christian pop thing. Didn’t sound good on an a magnificent organ, but it wasn’t better in a keyboard either.
The songs were too similar and often the text didn’t fit the melody.
We live in another country now where he chooses the music. He has a bunch to choose from so he goes by the texts of the days. When he has a priest that loves Latin, he goes Gregorian. When they want something simple he goes for something different. This has made him grow as a musician. And the books with all the hymns and mass are available at the entrance. With notes btw so even if you are new you can still sing along.

I don’t struggle with Marian dogmas….. I wrestle with the “Church approved” appearances and what came to follow. I see many Marian devotions getting excessive and borderline distracting. For example I hear more discussion day to day about her than Jesus from some folk on sundays. Obsessive prayer. Also I see approving instructions from these visions not from from God as a big problem and potential red flag to error
In Fatima the blessed Virgin Mary opened the ground and showed the children hell where the souls of sinners go!!! So it’s a supernatural fire… !!!!

She has a role in protecting God's children and the church from evil by crushing the head of the Serpent to the end of time. Apocalypse (12:1) 🙏
Regarding finding Marian teachings a hindrance to conversion: I converted to Catholicism over the course of ten years' study and prayer, from a Protestant upbringing. I received so much anti-Catholic messaging when I was growing up that I still haven't unwired it all, and possibly won't this side of the next life, even though I have assented to the teachings of the church with my intellect and will. So there is still something of the flavor of Catholicism that feels strange to me from time to time, almost twenty years after I officially joined the church and made my first Communion. It's as if I'll always speak the language with an accent. I would just say to others contemplating conversion that if you see a glimmer of the efficacy of the sacraments, acknowledge the potency of apostolic succession, and recognize that the Bible and Christian praxis were safeguarded by Catholics for 1500 years, before Protestantism arrived on the scene--then know you can trust the Church with your being.
