      Top tube bags serve a very good purpose, just not much on the sort of rides GCN are talking about (they didn't make it clear). I have done many trips around Europe, complete with panniers, rack bag, handlebar bag and top tube bag. The top tube bag was perfect for things like money and camera that are useful to have easily accessible. I didn't care about the increased air resistance as I had a pair of panniers on the back anyway! But if you're wanting to look "pro" and ride with as little as possible, then a small saddlebag is the way to go.

    • @charlesmagtoto7124
      @charlesmagtoto7124 4 года назад +8

      Right! I replaced my handlebar bag with a top tube one, and it has been incredibly reliable and practical, being able to carry a lot of stuff with me, including my phone, without the need to carry a bag. The aerodynamic penalty is pretty much a non-issue, and I’d have to try for my knee to hit it whilst riding.

    Nothing wrong with top tube bags, I used to use one, its about cycling not the way your bike looks, I love the channel but sometimes it seems it's all about cycle 'fashion', bling bikes and 'whats right' when it's opinion. Let people choose what to do with their bike and don't knock it. (And why was there a banana in the littering part? what's wrong with throwing it in a bush?)

      aDotFromTheFuture Well five people liked my comment, also if you look at the replies to gcn's original comment, there are about 20 people saying the same thing as me, and they did go on about it quite a lot in the video, and did say it was very wrong to do.

      matto809 Why are you still arguing about this? Loosen up dude. GCN has always been very lighthearted and it should go without saying that videos like these aren't supposed to be taken too seriously. There are no rules of what not to wear/have on your bike, so obviously it's not a serious issue. In their own way, they are also just making fun of what some of the cyclists consider as rules.

      mayalman I don't think they did because there is a purpose to them. For commuters but also triathletes. Most of the time my top tube bag is off my bike and I use my cycling jersey. However, when I'm doing a brick workout or doing a triathlon, my tri-suit doesn't have pockets so a top tube bag is the only place to keep nutrition.

    Love my top-tube bag! I use my bike for commuting & shopping in addition to fun rides, and keep the bike indoors at home & at work. I leave my wallet, keys, work-badge in there all the time. Plus I can throw snacks in there for long fun rides instead of bothering with my jersey pockets. It's great. My knees never hit it when riding in or out of the saddle. Maybe because I ride a larger size frame? Or because I use a skinny top-tube bag from Revelate Designs, I don't know.

    I almost always ride with a top tube bag as I rarely ride for less than 3 hours. I keep enought nutrition in the bag for 4 or 5 hours and don't ever have to worry about runing out of fuel. I also have a big saddle bag with two spare tubes pump tools lock and tissue paper for the sometime unavoidable road side stops. I also add an extra 8 to 10 kg under my top tube and often ware ankle weights when training. People look at me funny until race day when I shed close to 20 kg from my bike.

    Unnecessary Celebration: You be the Judge. I was 5 km from home on my daily 40 - 50 km ride when a group of people started cheering for me at my last uphill junction. I was still on a 2% decline as I rolled in so I threw my arms up to join them in the celebration - the experience was exhilarating. Then they started looking for my number - apparently my daily ride coincided with some 120 km race that day, that junction in my ride being the finish line. They were so excited that I just couldn't help but celebrate with them. When I explained that I was just on my daily ride, they all seemed to think I was some sort of fraudster - no fraud intended. Either way, I enjoyed the cheering and hope the real winner of the race enjoyed it just as much.

      Top tube bags are great for multi-day rides where you're taking luggage, cycle for hours and stop at cafes and grocery shops... and need items like money (and a camera if it's a little holiday!) easily accessible. My first ride across Europe, I didn't have one. I coped, but the next trip across Europe was with a top tube bag, and I found it so useful! I think GCN should have specified that for their kind of rides it's not that great. Because for my kind of rides, it's so good!

  • @jeremysart
    @jeremysart 9 лет назад

    Haha, I am very guilty of "checking myself out" in shop windows as I pass. But hey, that little ego boost helps the ride endure!
    I 100% agree with all of these, but especially appreciate littering. I always put wrappers or unwanted goods in my pockets or pack. It's not just disrespectful to nature, it's disrespectful to other riders and pedestrians who want to enjoy nature without seeing trash everywhere.
    About the top tube bags though, why the hate?? I don't have one, but I do often run with a pannier rack equipped with a pretty decent size Bontrager pack. It's honestly very light weight and great for keeping my jersey pockets free'd up for more granola bars and snacks.

    I get why many cyclist do not like the idea of a saddle bag. Personally, I would not use one for normal riding, club rides, races, sportifs or gran fondos. However, I would probably use one for a longer 300 or 400 KM touring ride if it was not fully supported and if I was not too concerned with my time. I think it would be very useful in that type of situation.

    I have a small bell on my handle bars, probably the best accessory I have. I cycle on a lot of cycle paths and it's perfect for giving pedestrians plenty of notice to get out the way. The other option is to either shout like crazy or slow down behind them and say excuse me. Get a bell.

      After decades of trial and error, I find folks keep getting more clueless about their surroundings and sense of self-preservation. So I've settled on variations of HEEEY- OHH!, and I use my singing voice to deliver it with power and control, for all the different situations. This way, they'll hear a sound, and they can decide what to do about it. I think "on your left" just scares the hell out of them.

    I know GCN is joking about many of these, and these guys are funny. However, it's still a bit annoying sometimes (referring to the top tube bag part, generally). In some videos, they warn about sounding like an "elitist" cyclist, but then they do something like this video. Ride your own ride, people. Be considerate of others. These are bikes (just a bit more expensive than the one you had as a kid, probably)! Have fun riding! Who really gives a shit what others think?

    Does Matt really fall this much? Ha, imagine this as if it was a cartoon... if I was one of Matt's bikes I would be scared for my life. As he walks over by his bikes before a ride they all start sweating except for the new shiny carbon. You hear squealing and crying as he takes the brand new bike. They all yell out Gerard. Little does Gerard know that he will be hung up on a tree that is even a mystery to physics in how it got there, placed on a bike rack... that is the news stand, and crashing over a log.
    All good fun... jokes, this is why I love this channel.

    I use a top tube bag, never been aware thee was any reason not to, in my defence 1) it was a gift, 2) it's silly to get my whole panniers out for the sake of my phone and keys, and 3) my saddle is right down as low as it will go so a saddle bag would obstruct my rear light
    Also did you film this in the states? If not why Lay's crisps instead of Walkers?

    I literally have my top tube bag arriving in the mail tomorrow, watching this in bed at night and saw the top tube bag part. Sigh* ... I'm still keeping it! Cause none of my riding clothes have pockets it's insane but none of them have pockets. And I already have the saddle bag filled with things for emergencies, air pump and 2 water bottle holders, there just isn't room for anything else, so the top tube bag will hold my phone and snacks.
