    What a finalé! In the background at around 8:11, you can actually see Mark Williams prepare to shake Hendry's hand - he obviously thought it was in as well!

    Stephen lost the match missing the pink in frame 16. From that point on it was a chain of events. Stephen Hendrys game was deteriorating, his trade mark long potting was not as good as it had once been. Just like Steve Davis 10 year run at the top before him, Stephens 10 year run was soon to end. Neither were as effective in the decade that followed. Both were playing below their best at maybe 80% and with the new wave of hungry players coming onto the scene neither of them no longer had the edge they once had. All we saw after their decline was flashbacks, but consistency failed them time after time. All good thing come to an end.

      mrghiax you make great points! And lol o Sullivan having just won his 33rd ranking title 25 years since his 1st!!! 42 years of age, no signs at all of ANY decline!!
      In fact Alan McManus, Stephen Hendry and Neil Foulds have all said this year in 2018 that Ronnie is playing better than he ever has done! This was from itv grand Prix event and just now the Ladbrokes players championship. Last year in October 2017 in the English Open final in the WHOLE session Ronnie made a 98% pot success rate Only missing 6 balls out of 300+ which is stupidly too good.....
      Go figure this one out lol.
      Totally agree with you though about Steve And Stephen

      amarsbarr I think it’s down to fitness, Ronnie keeps physically fit and he’s a natural at the game so he doesn’t need as much practice has the other players. Most players play in a robotic style while Ronnie plays more uniquely

    This was the third major final hendry had lost in a row after the 97 world's and the 97 UK championship, he only won one more major after this, it was the end of his era of dominance at this time

  • @kevinscott1697
    @kevinscott1697 5 лет назад +2

    This final was probably the first time Hendry s confidence took a big knock, he’d lost finals before but this was probably the first time he’d lost from such a dominant position, he’d played some decent stuff in this final but as he says himself he missed easier chances to win long before the black and that was a hard black dead straight from the cushion. His form went downhill for a number of months after this, he only won one ranking event that season and lost to Jimmy White in the first round at the crucible, lost the no 1 ranking and then it culminated in losing 9 0 to Marcus Campbell in the 1998 uk championship. He re employed his former coach Frank Callan who immediately pointed out a cueing flaw he had developed ie he wasn’t hitting the cue ball in the middle and wasn’t practicing the long hours he had been and not long after this his form improved and he won his seventh world title in 1999.

    Hendry vs Davis was the highlight in snooker in the late 80s/early 90s.
    Stephen Hendry’s greatest ever win was against Mike Hallett in the 1991 Masters Final coming back from 7-0 and 8-2 behind to win 9-8.
    Next is his win over Ken Doherty in the UK Championship Final where he recorded seven century breaks.
    His win over Ronnie O’Sullivan in the Liverpool Victoria Charity Challenge Final with the 147 and four centuries each. 8-2 up, pegged back to 8-8 then wins the decider with the maximum. Class!
    Beating Steve Davis 16-15 in the 1990 UK Championship. It confirmed his new reign of dominance and the end Steve Davis’ reign.
    Beating Jimmy White 18-5 in the 1993 World Championship Final where he was vastly superior to everybody he played. 136 total clearance in the first frame from his visit to the table.
    Winning the record SEVENTH world title in 1999 against Mark Williams 18-11.
    His first Crucible Maximum in 1995 against Jimmy White in the semi-final in frame 12.

      Hendry wasn't as dominant when the 'Class of 92' came into prominence but he was still a top player which he proved by winning the world title the following year. That generation of players simply weren't giving Hendry the amount of chances in frames that Jimmy White was giving him so it may seem as though he was playing worse when he wasn't, at the time.

    Hey, there's something else. I've always wanted to ask this from someone who truly knows things: do you think snooker is not the same game as.. what's the name now.. oh, 8-ball? I mean, come one, they both got the same tables, right? All the other different sports like tennis and football also have different fields so that makes snooker the same as 8-ball, right? Right? Am I right?

    98 was the beginning of the end of Hendry's utter domination of snooker. He had a brief reprieve the following year, when he turned on Hendry mode and got to 6 or 7 major finals and won most of them. But as soon as 1999 turned into 2000, Hendry's dapper suit turned into street rags, his cue turned into a broom, and his sports car into a pumpkin. If only his fairy godmother could've granted him that eigth title. Peter fucking Ebdon.. ugh. Cold sweats Stephen? You and me both, bro, you and me both

  • @hopy51
    @hopy51 11 лет назад +1

    the black hendry missed only looks easy. a straight shot when the cue ball is near the cushion is the worst thing ever. if you just hit it straight the cue ball will fall into the pocket with the black. if the cue ball was not that close to the cushion bottom spin would be a solution but the cushion didn't let him do that. thats why hendry tried to cut it and he hoped it will fall from the bottom corner of the pocket. but under pressure it's very hard and it was an overcut...

    How did Hendry miss that black. Granted, it's not as easy as the average layman would think, but still.. For me it signals something other than pressure. For a start, Hendry like no other player before, was a master at pressure shots. He sunk them all day long. For ten years he was the king of taking pressure and shoving it down a pocket in front of the object ball. Missing that black isn't about the pressure of winning another tournament, there's some other psychological menace at play here.

    Hendry's decline was rapid - never won much else after 1999 , O'Sullivan won the UK 21 years apart - he definitely surpassed Hendry

    • @1010thechamp
      @1010thechamp 9 лет назад

      Hendry's decline was mainly due to yips, and that started during the time of this match hence why 99 was his last championship, there was other problems like motivation issues after winning so much during the 90's and burn out after playing and winning so much, BUT Ronnie hasn't surpassed Hendry at all, Hendry still has a lot more ranking titles and 2 more world championships, and it looks like Ronnie doesn't have more than 2 world championships left in him, he is nearly 40 to get another 3 world championships to surpass Hendry looks unlikely now, maybe in 2013 when he was in middle of his rich vein of form it was possible but after Selby beat him last year the decline seems constant now.
